May 2015
Dear Prospective Student/Athlete:
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the 2015-2016 school year at Clarksburg High School
(CHS). As a member of the CHS coaching staff, we look forward to getting our ten year off to a great start. Let
me take this opportunity to introduce myself. As the Girls Varsity Field Hockey Coach, I am actively looking for
interested, dedicated, and hard-working female athletes in grades 9th -12th who will be committed and look
forward to the opportunity to play Field Hockey at Clarksburg High School. Most young ladies are unfamiliar or
unaware that the sport of Field Hockey even exists. Our returning players have done a fabulous job, along with
the coaching staff, in building our field hockey program. Let me enlighten you… Field Hockey truly is a GREAT
sport; a very fast, exciting, high-energy, up-tempo sport that contains a lot of action, goal-scoring, competition,
great exercise, friendships, team bonding, and school spirit. I ask you… what better way to get acclimated to the
school, meet lifetime friends, wear cool uniforms and hockey spirit gear, work with great coaches, and represent
your school with Clarksburg Coyote “PRIDE.” You can find that kind of experience by playing CHS Field Hockey!
No experience is necessary; all you need is a strong desire and a passion for learning the game of field hockey,
and be able to make a commitment to excellence both academically and athletically, as well as wanting to
represent your school with Coyote Pride!
Enclosed you will find a Summer workout program, along with hockey game rules, and tryout information. A
recent physical and all MCPS forms (available online on the Clarksburg HS athletic website: chscoyotes.com) are
needed for tryouts. I highly recommend getting your physical prior to the beginning of your workouts this
Summer. Please consider Field Hockey as YOUR sport to start off the Fall 2015 school year. You will absolutely
fall in love with it…Since Tryouts start on August 12th, and since the Summer will be going by way too fast…we
encourage you to start your Summer training NOW!!
See you on the HOCKEY FIELD August 12th. Hockey forms will be collected on August 11th from 4:30-
5:00 in the gym lobby at Clarksburg High School.
For further information, Please contact Coach Natoli via e-mail at [email protected]. or 301-2129050 (home), 301-922-6845 (cell). Have a safe and restful Summer! Stay Cool!!!! GET IN SHAPE! GO COYOTES!

FIELD HOCKEY 101… A PARENT’S GUIDE TO
The Game of Field Hockey…
A field hockey match consists of two halves, 30 minutes each (JV-25 minute halves), and begins with a pass back.
There are 11 players to a side, one in which is a goalkeeper. The object of the game is to score more goals than
the opposition. Goals are scored when the ball (made of solid plastic, weighing between 5 ½ ounces and 5 ¾
ounces with a circumference of 8 inches to 9 inches) crosses the goal line between the goal posts after being
touched by the stick of an attacker within the 16 yard line circle. Each goal is worth one point. The ball can only
be touched with the flat side of the curved, hardwood stick.
The playing field is 100 yards by 60 yards, divided by a center line and a 25 yard line on each half of the field. The
striking circle is a semi-circle measured out 16 yards from each goal post. The goal cages are each seven feet high
and 12 feet wide. All players have an equal chance to gain control of the ball as it is dribble, pushed, or passed
down the field. Fundamental skills used in hockey are dribbling, passing, shooting, deflecting, marking, tackling,
and clearing.
Some more common infractions (fouls) include advancing (other than the goalkeeper, no player may advance
the ball with any part of the body except a hockey stick), obstruction (illegally shielding/screening), dangerous
play, either with a stick or illegal body contact that may lead to dangerous play. For a breach of rules, an umpire
may award a free hit, penalty corner or penalty stroke (1 v 1 against the goalie – similar to a penalty kick in
soccer).
A majority of scoring opportunities in each match come from penalty corners. A penalty corner is a free hit by an
offensive player from a point on the goal line at least 10 yards from the goal. All attackers must be outside the
circle before the hit is taken. A maximum of five defenders, including the goalie may be behind the goal line
while the remaining defenders must be positioned beyond the center line. A penalty corner is awarded for:

Any breach of the rules by a defender within the circle that would have resulted in a free hit to the
attacking team if the breach had occurred inside the circle; dangerous clears
 An intentional hit over the goal line by a defender in the circle.
A penalty stroke is a one-on-one, seven yards in front of the goal vs. goalkeeper on the goal line. All other
players line up beyond the 25 yard line. A penalty stroke is awarded for any intentional breach/foul by the
defenders in the circle when the result may have been a goal.
The following overtime procedure is used when a game is tied at the end of regulation play:



Playing 2-10 minute “sudden victory” periods. Each team consists of six field players and a goalkeeper
(During which time there are no off-sides and only a total of four defenders back on the defensive
penalty corners).
The game is completed as soon as a team scores a goal. (no penalty strokes for JV)
If the score remains the same at the end of the second extra period, a series of one set (5) of penalty
strokes will be taken. Five players from each team shall take a penalty stroke alternately against the
same goalkeeper from the opposing team.
