a 3rd week &
65s division
By Glenn Miller
Dick Bremer brings an unusual
perspective to the Roy Hobbs World
Series.
The right-handed pitcher for the
Minnesota Goats has spent the past 33
years broadcasting Minnesota Twins
games.
Since the days when Kent Hrbek
played first and Frank Viola pitched for
the team, Bremer has been in broadcast
booths talking about the Twins, both the
good and the bad.
There were no ex-Twins around
the PDC when Bremer stepped on the
mound on Sunday as the starting pitcher.
“I’m glad they’re not here to criticize,

Roy Hobbs Baseball February’s
Sunshine Classic baseball series has
added a 65s division to its lineup for
2017 and has stretched the event over
3 weekends.
The 65s division will play February
9-12 and will be a full locker room event
with teams guaranteed 6 games over
3½ days.
The 65s will be playing along side the
Father-Son teams, and the entire event is
limited to 16 teams. With 16 teams, one
game a day will be played at Terry Park.
The Sunshine Classic Presidents’ Day
tournament is scheduled for February
16-20, with play starting on the 17th for
two divisions: 50+ and 60+.
The Presidents’ Day event is in its
8th year and is a signature Roy Hobbs
locker room event. It was a total sellout
in 2016. Every team plays 7 games over

Thursday Schedule Ready
by 7 pm on Wednesday
There are 27 games scheduled for Wednesday in the Roy
Hobbs World Series. Play should be completed by 5 p.m.
Once those games are over, Roy Hobbs will update
standings and set up the playing schedule for Thursday,
matching teams with similar records but working to avoid
any rematches and/or games between teams from the same
league or area.
The schedule for Thursday’s games will be released no later
than 5 p.m. Wednesday – it will be posted at royhobbs.com,
and recorded on the Roy Hobbs message line: 239.533.7694.
When it comes to Friday’s playoff matchups, the Roy
Hobbs Advisory Committee will meet at approximately 5 p.m.
Thursday at RHWS headquarters to determine the set up and
seeding for the AAAA playoffs. Although all AAAA managers
have been invited to participate on the committee, any
interested managers are welcome to come and be involved too. Eight teams will continue in 4A playoffs. There will be 4
playoff divisions in Classics and 2 in Timeless.

the 4 days.
The Sunshine Classic Veterans-Masters weekend is February
24-26, with teams guaranteed 5 games.
All Sunshine Classic events are locker room events, with
the locker room included in the team fee.
Roy Hobbs puts an auxiliary locker room into play for these
events, but it is only used after the main locker room is filled,
so it is a first-pay, first-serve event.
The Classic events are capped at 16 teams and/or 256
players, which works out to 16 players per team if 16 teams
register. All games are 7 innings and planned for the Player
Development Clubhouse and Complex, 4301 Edison Avenue –
with 16 teams, there would be one game a day at Terry Park.
In keeping with the Sunshine Classic guidelines that allow
underage players in all divisions, 65s teams may carry as many
as 5 players who must be 60-years-old by the start of play. Any
players turning 65 during the calendar year may pitch.
The cost for each of the events is:
65s & Father-Son: $2600 if paid by January 25; 6-game
guarantee.
Presidents’ Day 50s & 60: $3100 by February 1; 7-game
guarantee.
35s & 45s: $2300 by February 8; 5-game guarantee.
All prices increase after the deadlines.
Contact Rob Giffen at 330.923.3400 or [email protected]
for registration information or to be included on the email list
for this event.

Programming for the flat screen television units on wheels
at the Roy Hobbs World Series is growing.
Right now, the units are at the Player Development Complex;
however, we hope to be adding them to the other complexes
where we have a strong enough WiFi signal to operate them.
In the meantime, Roy Hobbs experimented with some
videotaping Sunday of games at PDC and created a series of
vignettes of games and players, which will be carried on the
flat screens on Monday.
More video work will be done by David Robertson on
Monday to add to the library we have.
The broadcasts include this Inside Pitch, scores and
schedules, the vignettes of current action, the updated Roy
Hobbs promotional video and other videos from the world
of baseball.
We hope you enjoy it.

From page 1
analyze my swing and pitching the way we have to on
television,” said Bremer, who is competing in his first World
Series. “It would give them a chance for revenge, I think.”
Bremer, 60, has no illusions about his own ability. He
played at Staples High in Minnesota and described himself
as a “mediocre high school pitcher.” He then tried out for the
team at St. Cloud State, where he was cut.
“Right away,” Bremer said. “I joked later with my baseball
coach, a guy by the name of Jim Stanek. … that he was the first
one to recognize my broadcasting ability.”
Bremer then went to work for the college radio station,
carving out a path to a distinguished career that has led him
to the Minnesota Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
He didn’t play again until about 20 years ago when he
started attending Twins’ fantasy camps. He still treasures the
memory of the first time he stepped on a field, wearing a glove
and throwing a ball instead of taking about other people doing
such things.
“To just stand there and take ground balls and catch most
of them was a lot of fun,” Bremer said.
He said the name of his Roy Hobbs team – Goats– stands
for Greatest Of All Time. He admitted the name could mean
something else.
“The age of the people playing,” Bremer said.
Bremer revels in the chance to play again. “For everybody
here we were all told at one point you can’t play baseball
anymore,” Bremer said.
That came for Bremer at St. Cloud State 40 years ago. There
was no Roy Hobbs World Series then.
“Where they say you can keep playing,” Bremer said. “That’s
the beauty of this.”

MVP Awards and Available Upgrades
Every team is asked to name an MVP for the week, and
managers are issued an MVP certificate.
Those should be redeemed at the Roy Hobbs World Series
Headquarters at the Player Development Complex on Fridays
or Saturdays. Samples of the MVP items are on display in the
Roy Hobbs Pro Shop at PDC.
Managers may select an additional MVP – they should see
Karen in the RHWS headquarters office to name the players
and pay the $25 fee before the orders can be placed. If the
player cannot present the certificate in person, the manager
or player should contact Karen by email ([email protected])
for information on how to order their award. Deadline for
basic MVP award orders is Dec. 16, 2016.
This year’s RHWS MVP Award is a MVP-embroidered
hat. Players can choose to wear it out the door or have it
personalized with name, number and team name and it will
be shipped directly to the player in January unless otherwise
requested. Shipping is included within the continental US.
There are 5 potential MVP upgrades that can be seen at RHWS
headquarters.
Results corrections
Please check the posted results and standings each day.
Managers should contact Rob at the Tournament
Headquarters (239.533.7694) with corrections to scores.
That’s the best way to make sure that playoff seedings and
pairings are as accurate as we can make them.
Please help with dugouts
Roy Hobbs Baseball and the grounds crews need your help
in the dugouts.
When your games are over and you are leaving the dugout,
please police it for trash and cups, etc. Your assistance in
cleaning up the dugouts each day will be greatly appreciated.
50/50 raffle
50/50 raffle tickets, to benefit the Roy Hobbs Foundation,
are available each day at the Player Development Complex.
Tickets are $1 apiece or 6 for $5. The drawing will be held in the
patio area at the Player Development Complex at 5 PM Friday.
The Roy Hobbs Foundation was established to raise monies
for research on finding a cure for Leukemia and to assist our
Challenged Athlete friends.
Key first aid items
Two key First Aid items: Drink plenty of fluids while
playing; don’t just wait until the game is over. Water will be
available at the fields.
