Functions of Protective Equipment
Helmet – a form of protective gear worn to protect the head from injuries. helmets are used for
recreational activities and sports such as American football, ice hockey, baseball, and rock
climbing. Dangerous work activities such as construction, mining, and riot police.
Face Mask – a form of protective gear usually attached with the helmet to protect the front of
your face and head. used by American Football, Hockey, Baseball (sometimes), military.
Ear Guards – used to protect the ears from loud noises or being hit. Used by American football,
baseball, construction, military.

Mouth Guards – protects athletes from dental/oral injuries. Used by American football,
basketball, soccer (sometimes)
Neck Collars – there are many different types of neck collars to help prevent and heal neck
injuries. All collars support the head.
Padding – most commonly used by football players to prevent injuries. They protect the body so
it doesn’t take a direct hit to a body part.

Sports Bras – provide the best support for physical activities, minimizes breast movement,
regulate sweat and temperature control, can also be very comfortable.
Athletic supporter/cup – is an undergarment for supporting the male genitalia during cycling,
sports or other vigorous physical activity.
Shin guards –a piece of equipment worn on the front of a player’s shin to protect them from
injury. These are commonly used in sports including association soccer, baseball, ice hockey,
field hockey, lacrosse, rugby, cricket, and other sports.

NOCSAE Warning – National Operating Committee on Standards for
Athletic Equipment. It is a warning for the athletes saying that they
are aware that playing a sport increases risk of injuries even though
they try to minimize the risk of injury.

Modification of Equipment – the reason for modifications on
equipment would be to help increase the performance level of the
athlete or to protect the athlete from injuries better.

Proper Fit and Selection – you need proper fitting equipment such as
shoes, helmet, and mouth guard or else they can cause serious injuries
to the athlete.

Use of Defective or worn out equipment – defective or worn out
equipment can cause injuries that are easily preventable with proper
equipment.
