Bringing mechanics from classic Super Nintendo games like Mega Man X and Super Metroid into the Gears of War universe creates a unique gameplay experience. The task of designing this level offers experience and knowledge on gameplay design, which is the area I wish to pursue in my professional career. Quick Summary “COG Man X” is a single player mod created using the Gears of War engine. The level takes place in the Gears of War universe but is not involved with the main campaign of the game. The player controls test Subject X: a COG soldier with no memory of who or where he is. He wakes up in an abandoned military facility where scientists performed genetic experiments on dying soldiers. The scientists tried to find a way to incorporate advanced Locust genetics in these soldiers. The results made Subject X capable of absorbing abilities from enemies. Now he must escape the military facility to search for answers about his past. Hook(s) Absorbing enemies’ abilities after killing them Rocket Shot ability Kryll Shield ability Gameplay Highlights The level merges mechanics from classic Super Nintendo games with Gears of War gameplay to create a unique experience. The player learns how to use two new abilities to overcome the challenges in the level. The rocket launcher can destroy broken doors and the Kryll shield makes the player invincible for 5 seconds, but slows down the movement of the player. New Mechanics “COG Man X” introduces the mechanic of absorbing abilities from specific enemies. Rocket Shot: This ability changes the functionality of the COG pistol to shoot rockets that destroy broken doors. Rocket Shot deals more damage than the regular COG pistol shot but has a longer delay in between shots. The player learns this ability from JACK at the beginning of the level. Kryll Shield: The Kryll Shield ability makes the player invulnerable for five seconds but also makes him move slower. The ability has a cooldown of 5 seconds after using, explained by a custom-made UI scene. The player learns this ability after defeating the Kryll Boomer. The player learns that rockets destroy broken doors, and gets to use the rocket ability in one encounter with weak enemies in a large room. Middle 3 The middle part of the mission introduces resting points for the player in order to pace the final encounter. The player fights a few weaker enemies in a hallway. End 7 The final section of the level incorporates a more difficult enemy encounter and introduces a new mechanic. The player learns the Kryll Shield ability and uses it to backtrack through the level. Page 7 of 40 7/14/2017 LDD Confidential Gears of War Characters Character X Drone Wretch Kryll Kryll Boomer JACK Description The main character of this mission is a test subject from a military genetic lab with no memory of his past. The laboratory attempted to combine Locust DNA with injured COG soldiers. Because of the experiments, X has the ability to absorb power from their enemies. The abilities he learns in this mission are the “Rocket Shot” and the “Kryll Shield”. His default equipment is a COG Pistol Drones are the most common soldier in the Locust Horde. They are tall and bulky humanoid type of locust. Drones can operate weapons and have enough intelligence to hide and take cover whenever in combat. They usually spawn from emergence holes created in the ground but can also appear from other spaces. Their equipment in this mission is the Hammerburst Assault Rifle. Wretches are small and fast creatures that engage the player in close combat. They are very primitive creatures that resemble monkeys and apes in behavior and movement. Wretches see the player and rush towards him. They do not stop to take cover even if being shot at. Kryll are a flying type of locust. They only attack in dark areas due to their photo-sensitivity, and they move fast and always in swarms. There is no way of killing the Kryll, just to avoid them by standing in well-lit areas. Boomers are the heavy weapon specialists of the Locust Horde. They are bigger and stronger than a regular Drone. Boomers behavior in combat is not intelligent. They do not use cover when being shot at and hardly ever move, and when they do is in a slow pace. The Boomer specific to this level has the power to summon Kryll to protect him. His equipment in this mission is the Boomshot. A small military utility robot labeled “Jack-of-All-Trades” or just “JACK”. This specific JACK unit is a security guard, developed to protect the doctors of the laboratory from possible Locust attacks. The JACK unit reads Subject X as a possible menace due to the massive amount of Locust cells infused in his body. Visual Themes Theme Genetic Lab (Interior) Genetic Lab (Exterior) Raul Siqueira Description The interior of the genetic lab has an abandoned feel, dark and creepy. The majority of the lights inside the laboratory no longer work due to the fact that is abandoned, leaving only a few lights in each room. The decoration consists mostly of file cabinets, shelves, closets and some destroyed meshes to reinforce the abandoned feel. The floor consists of old, stained tileable squares. The walls and ceiling are mostly made of concrete, except in the smaller rooms that have ripped wallpaper on the walls. The exterior area has the same dark atmosphere as the interior. It is a little lighter due to it being an open space with different light sources, but is still dark. The rain outside is mild, but enough to create small puddles in some areas and to cause water dripping from the ceiling inside the laboratory. Gears of War screenshots Raul Siqueira Page 12 of 40 7/14/2017 LDD Confidential Gears of War Level Summary Campaign Context “COG Man X” is part of a multi-level campaign that takes place 5 years before the main storyline of Gears of War. The campaign, called “Locust Hunter,” has three sequential levels, the first one being “COG Man X” that introduces the player to the setting and the different mechanics from Gears of War. In this campaign, the player controls X, a COG soldier that can absorb abilities from their enemies after defeating them. The first level consists on finding a way out of a laboratory and learning two new abilities, required to complete the challenges in this level and the ones that follow. The following levels of the campaign start immediately after finishing the previous one. Backstory During the war against the Locust, the COG army developed a secret program to breed a new class of super soldiers. The army established an underground facility with some of the world’s best scientists. They believed that they could enhance the common soldiers’ abilities with advanced genetics. Based on the research of Dr. Aran Light, which explored infusing Locust cells inside human soldiers, the experiments began. The facility had ten specimens, all injured COG soldiers. Nine of the test subjects died after the first infusion of Locust cells, but the tenth subject survived not only one but three more infusions. After the last infusion, Subject X entered a coma, but before the doctors could help him, the Locust found the secret facility and exterminated the entire crew, leaving Subject X for dead, lying on the surgery table. Aftermath After escaping the laboratory, X continues in his quest to find answers about his past. His next challenge is “Vile Brumak” the second level of the campaign “Locust Hunter” where he needs to defeat a genetically altered Brumak. After the battle with the Brumak, X continues to absorb abilities from powerful Locust enemies in order to survive and reach a COG military base for answers. The player starts the level in a small room. A cutscene shows JACK destroying the door to the room and running away from the player. He must chase JACK to the other room. 2. Inside this room, the player fights JACK. After a few shots, the robot goes down and a cutscene starts to show X learning the Rocket Shot ability (WOW moment). 3. The player needs to use the Rocket Shot to destroy the jammed door. 4. 3 Drones spawn from the emergence hole in the left upper corner. The player has 5 different options for cover position. 2 more Drones spawn as the player kill the previous ones. 5. After clearing the emergence hole, the player must use the Rocket Shot to open the door on the right. He goes up a set of stairs and again uses the Rocket Shot to open the door. Upon reaching the other door in the next room, the player must move a box to clear space. 6. The player battles the group of Locust in a hallway with 4 different cover positions. The player can also retreat to the previous room where he can find more cover. 7. After killing all the enemies the player must push a button that activates the door controls. The player must use the Rocket Shot to open the door in the lower left corner, and go down a set of stairs to reach the next room. The player has 6 different cover positions with different heights. After killing the Kryll Boomer, the player reaches the control center for the facility and unlocks previous locked green doors. Also, the player learns the Kryll Shield ability (WOW moment) 9. After the battle against the Kryll Boomer a wretch charges towards the player. The player must use the new ability to kill the wretch and cross the laser door in the initial hallway. 10. In this area the player must push a box all the way to the end of the room while using the Kryll Shield to avoid a deadly laser. 11. The final challenge for the player is to cross the Kryll infested hallway. He must use the Kryll Shield to go through each safe spots before reaching the end of the level. The level starts with the main character waking up. A cutscene shows JACK spotting X and giving an intruder alert. The player must follow JACK through the hallway and into the small room where he must shoot it. 2. After killing JACK a cutscene shows X learning a new ability. A UI scene pops up to teach the player how to use the ability. 3. The player must use his new ability Rocket Shot to destroy the jammed door 4. 3 Drones immediately spawn from the emergence hole, and 2 more come after the player kills the previous one. Drones equipment is one Hammerburst Assault Rifle. The player has five different cover options spread across the room allowing one front strategy by taking cover on the first block, or a flank by following the cover on the right side. 5. The player uses the Rocket Shot to open the door that leads to a set of stairs. At every 10 seconds, the Kryll Boomer activates the Kryll Shield ability, which makes him invulnerable for five seconds, changing the player strategy to avoid the boom shots. After killing the Kryll Boomer a cutscene shows X learning a new ability. A UI scene pops up to teach the player how to use the ability. 2.
