ATHLETICS The athletics team competes in the Canterbury, SI and NZ Secondary School Championships. A number of athletes compete for the school in inter-club competitions on Saturdays. The squad also regularly travel to Australia to compete. We currently have several national champions. Our boys have represented NZ in the World Youth, Oceania and World Junior Championships. Training is on Monday and Wednesday before school for middle and distance athletes and Wednesday afternoon for sprinters, plus other times organised by the school. BASKETBALL You need own racquet Trainings per week: Nil Winter Sport Option Only Teacher in Charge: Mr Chang Subscription / Approximate Cost: Maximum of twelve Year 9 boys will be selected to play in U15 grade on Saturdays; others will play on Fridays in the interschool social basketball games. Competition grade players are encouraged to play basketball as their only winter sport. The school basketball club has a strong relationship with the University of Canterbury basketball club and the players are coached by the coaching staff of UC Basketball regularly. $130 Saturday Grades $50 Social Grades Trainings per week: 2 Winter Sport Option Only CRICKET Cricket is a very popular and busy sport in the school with around 21 teams representing CBHS each week. We are well resourced and have options for both social or novice players and those more interested in competitive teams. Most teams play on Saturdays in either Twenty/20 (9am), All day (10.30) or 40-Over (1pm). New boys are selected in teams based on a skills analysis at our January camp. All teams receive paid coaching during the week. We have a history of success in local grades, have produced 37 Black Caps and we have won more National Gillette Cup and NZCT titles than any other school in the country. CROSS COUNTRY Teacher in Charge: Mr Parr Subscription / Approximate Cost: $125 - $350 Trainings per week: All teams min 1 per week Summer Sport Option Only Teacher in Charge: Miss Todd Subscription / Approximate Cost: A squad of around fifty senior and junior runners participate in interschool cross-country events during the season. Some of these are specialist runners and some play other sports also. Boys compete for the school on Saturdays in local interclub events. The teams in recent years have built up a very successful record in Canterbury and National Championships. The squad also have regular opportunities to travel and compete in Australia. CYCLING The cycling squad competes in the inter-school competitions on Wednesday afternoons, during the winter terms. Typically around thirty CBHS students race each week. Racing is held in Halswell on the Old Tai Tapu Road and the distances are vary from 8 to 12 kilometres based on ability. All riders can compete in the Canterbury Teams Time Trial (Littolf Cup), a Blenheim tour, South Island Champs and Nationals. The school team has a proud history of producing a number of New Zealand representatives at all levels. They train with the cross-country and cycling teams and also compete in those sports for the school. FENCING Fencing can be taken as a full-year sport; it takes place on Wednesday afternoon, in conjunction with CGHS, in the Small Gym. There is a fee ($80 approx. depending on numbers involved) to cover gear and coaching. An internationally-experienced coach is employed to run a onehour session each week. Periodic tournaments are held on Saturdays or Sundays. FOOTBALL Trainings per week: 2 runs, 2 cycles with teams + individual programmes Teacher in Charge: Mr Mehrtens Subscription / Approximate Cost: $80 Trainings per week: 1 Full Year Option Teacher in Charge: Mr Hall Subscription / Approximate Cost: There are currently 10 football teams ranging from the 1st XI to 14th Grade. Most teams play on Saturdays, usually in the morning. CBHS has a proud tradition of successful achievement at both local and national level. In recent years the 1st XI has been consistently one of the best secondary school sides in Christchurch. $95 (2014) Trainings per week: 2 Winter Sport Option Only GOLF Beginning golfers and those with high handicaps have coaching every week and play at Hagley. Low handicap golfers compete for positions in the school golf teams, which play in the local interschool competitions. The A team also competes in local and national interschool events. It is preferred that students have their own clubs, although we may be able to assist if required. HOCKEY There are five to six CBHS Hockey teams. The 1st and 2nd XI plays on a Friday night in a CHA Secondary Schools Premier League: Division One and Two, and the other teams play in CHA Youth U18 Division One or Two (playing Saturday pm) or CHA Youth U18 Division Three (playing on Friday evenings). The 1st XI also plays in Inter Secondary School Hockey Tournaments - either Rankin Cup or the India Shield. Practices are at CBHS and/or Nunweek Park. ROWING Rowing has a keen and successful group of participants competing regularly. The rowers train on Kerrs Reach and have an association with the Canterbury Rowing Club and the NZ Rowing Association. Each year we compete in a variety of regattas culminating in the NZ school championships in March. The rowing season goes from October to March. In Term 1, Year 9’s have an introduction to rowing on Monday & Friday afterschool. $50 for Term 1. In Term 4 they join the full school programme. All teams play on Saturdays, U15 and below in the mornings, the others in the afternoon. All teams practise at least once a week. All teams have two coaches and a manager, at least one of whom is a staff member. Each season a number of teams win or finish high in their grades and many players are selected for representative teams. SQUASH Summer recreational squash takes place at Riccarton Squashways. A fee of $6 is charged each time for court hire and $1 for racquets; balls are provided if necessary. The top teams compete in the Canterbury, South Island and National competitions and also play against Otago Boys’ High. They won the Canterbury, S. I. and National teams’ title in 2011. Recreational squash is also played on Wednesday. There is a charge of $6 for court hire at Squashways. Trainings per week: 1-2 Full Year (recreational) Winter (competition) SURFING Teacher in Charge: Mr Matthews The interschool surf contest runs during the first and fourth term at New Brighton surf club on a Wednesday afternoon from 3-5pm. The purpose of the contest, other than to have fun and improve your surfing, is to give surfers experience at contest conditions and it becomes a core component in selecting a Canterbury surf team, that go onto have winter training squads and attend national surf champs. Subscription / Approximate Cost: $2 / wk for van Trainings per week: 1 Summer Sport Option Only TABLE TENNIS Teacher in Charge: Mr Chang Subscription / Approximate Cost: Three teams play an in-school competition on Wednesday afternoons. Other boys play at school on Wednesday afternoons and have the opportunity to be selected for the inter-school competition. TENNIS The best tennis players in each year group play in an interschool competition on Wednesday afternoons. Those not in teams are put into recreational tennis groups which play once a week at lunchtime or after school. Tennis has been extremely strong at CBHS for many years with the A team having an excellent record in the local championship and in interschool fixtures. The senior A team has placed in the top four at national championships. The recent success of the senior touch team has inspired a junior programme which will take place on Wednesday afternoons, with training once a week. There will be a Year 9 team and a Year 10 team. TRIATHALON $25 Trainings per week: 1 Summer Sport Option Only Teacher in Charge: Ms Todd The school has a small but strong team which competes in the Canterbury, SI and NZ Secondary Schools Championships. In 2008 we won the senior and intermediate national team tag titles and were third in the juniors. In 2009 the U14 team were third and the senior team won the team tag national title. In 2010 the U14 team was third in the teams race and Greg Moore earned an individual third place. The team trains Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays with the athletics team and on Saturdays at Corsair Bay. Boys not in a swimming squad get lunchtime coaching in the school pool. TRAMPING Subscription / Approximate Cost: Trainings per week: Summer Sport Option Only Teacher in Charge: Mr Cox Subscription / Approximate Cost: Weekend trips take place mostly in Arthurs Pass National Park or sometimes in the Lewis Pass area. Students are expected to go on at least three tramps per year. They require their own equipment and pay transport costs. WATER POLO We have up to three water polo teams that compete in junior and senior grades in an interschool competition. The team has performed very well for a number of years. The senior team has won the Christchurch and South Island secondary schools championships on a number of occasions in recent years and been well placed in the New Zealand championships. A number of boys are selected for representative teams. NB Opportunities may be limited in 2013 because of the loss of facilities as a result of the earthquakes. We have a great group of students who are interested in the sport and a coaching team that is enthusiastic about its development within the school, resulting in some great results at the regional and national competitions. Teams at the senior and junior level regularly participate in a Monday after-school competition against other local schools during Terms 1 and 4. We also send junior and senior teams to the Canterbury, South Island and National tournaments. YACHTING We have a small, keen and successful group of competition sailors. We hire 420s for competitions. Members are expected to have competition experience. Sailing takes place each Wednesday afternoon at Lyttelton and the team sails in a number of interschool events. We currently hold the Peter Mander Trophy and the Rotary Trophy. Our team has represented Canterbury for the last nine years at the national secondary schools team championships. A cost is fixed at the start of each year to offset travel and maintenance costs, hire of rescue boats, etc. and $150 to go towards boat hire.
