Subject: Physical Education/SPHE
Class: 5th/6th class
Strand: Outdoor and Adventure Activities
Strand Unit: Outdoor Challenges
Lesson: Team Building
Objectives: The children will be enabled to:
• Develop their teamwork and cooperation skills
• Plan for simple cooperative activities
• Show increasing balance and coordination when taking part in group challenges
Materials/Resources: hula hoops, balls, whistle, traffic light cards
Introduction:
Warm Up: Before beginning I will remind the children of the stop signal and I will practise it with
them. For the warm-up I will get the children to walk/jump/skip around the hall. I will get the
children to move like certain animals e.g. hopping like a kangaroo, flying like a bird, moving quietly
like a mouse, stamping like an elephant, walking like a monkey while still reinforcing the starting and
stopping signals.
Development:
Step 1: Pass the Hoop
Divide the children into groups of about six. Pass a hoop to one child in each
group and ask them to hang it on their shoulder. Each group makes a circle
by holding hands. Pass hoop around the circle without anyone unclasping
their hands.
Variations: Use two hoops traveling in the same direction/in opposite directions.

Step 2: Tangle Twister
• Each group makes a circle – without holding hands.
• Each person in the group places their right hand into the
centre of the circle and takes hold of one person’s hand,
but not the person next to them.
• They now place their left hand into centre of the circle
and take hold of another person’s hand but not the

person standing next to them.
• The challenge for the group is to untangle and form

a ring without letting go of each others’ hands.
• Some may face outward while others face inward.
Challenge: Can any group finish with everyone facing
the same way?
Step 3: Suspension Bridge:
Each group forms a line all facing the same way with one person touching a wall.
The challenge is to see how far the group can stretch out from the wall in a chain.
Children can only touch the ground with their feet and must be holding onto
the person next to them.
Clue: Both feet do not have to touch the ground. Do you get a better stretch holding a hand or a
foot?
Step 4: Over Under Relay:
• The children will be asked to line up in their groups’ one behind each other with their legs apart.
• The game is explained to the children and then each group is given a ball.
• On the start signal the first player passes to the ball to the second player under the legs,
second player passes to third etc. until it gets to the end of the line.
• When the ball gets to the end of the tunnel the last person runs to the front of the line.
• This time the first player passes the ball over his/her head until ball reaches end of line when the
last player runs to front of line.
• The third time the first player will pass the ball over his/her head, the second player will pass the
ball under his/her legs and it will continue in this over/under fashion until it reaches the end of the
line. This will be performed twice so that each player has the opportunity to go first.
Conclusion
Cool Down: The runaway train
• The children line up to form a train and they begin to run.
• The train goes up a hill and gets slower and slower until it comes to a stop and everyone
sinks to the ground.
• The children sit with legs out in front. They stretch to the right and then back,
forward and then back, to the left and then back.
To finish they shake out the legs and arms.
The children sit with their eyes closed. The teacher selects one child who tiptoes around the area
lightly touching each child in turn. When tipped, the child opens their eyes and moves slowly and
quietly to the door to line up.
Integration:
This lesson can be used with many different subjects and also as a transition lesson. It is an ideal way
to start off a Maths trail or an English scavenger hunt.
Assessment:
Teacher Observation-especially of children’s willingness to participate in group tasks
Differentiation:
I will ensure that tasks are demonstrated clearly to ensure everybody understands. I will give help to
those who are having difficulty with a task. I will ask those who do not have difficulty to demonstrate
the task.
