History
-’Rink’ originally came from Scotland in 18th century
-1877 first rules published in Montreal Gazette
-Amateur leagues set up in Canada 1880s
-1st played in the USA in 1893
-1900s game came to Europe
-1911 blues lines are added, time is divided, goalies
can fall onto the ice
-1917 first NHL Stanley Cup to Toronto Arena
-1920 added to the Winter Olympics with
international rules
-2004-2005 NHL season because of a lack of a
collective agreement
-2010 Winter Olympics held in Vancouver where
Canada won both women's and men's

Rules
Logistics:
-3 periods of 20 minutes

Face-offs:
-starts the game after any stoppage

Body Checking vs. Minor Penalties:
-Body Checking:
-pushing with shoulder, torso, or hip
-illegal to push from behind
-Minor Penalties
-sent off for 2 minutes without substitution
-tripping, holding, hooking (with stick),
interference
-with stick: slashing, cross checking, spearing,
high-sticking
Major Penalties:
-usually fights (5 minutes off with substitutions)
-deliberate minor penalties can be called major ones
at discretion of referee.
-ejection from the game if serious injury is caused

-made of vulcanized rubber
-moved with feet or stick (no hands)
-kept frozen during periods to take out
