recommended minimum sanctions for alcohol and other drug offenses

Illinois State University
RECOMMENDED MINIMUM SANCTIONS
FOR ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUG OFFENSES
These are recommended minimum sanctions for alcohol and other drug offenses for students at Illinois State University.
Sanctions may be increased based on the nature of the behavior and/or the previous disciplinary history of the student,
but may not be reduced unless the case manager or hearing body finds adequate mitigating factors present. The
University encourages students to make healthy and responsible choices, as well as to adhere to the Code of Student
Conduct, federal, state, and local laws. Be advised that the University asserts jurisdiction for all off-campus cases
involving the possession, use, manufacture and/or distribution of alcohol and other drugs.

Addendum #1: Sanctioning is a cumulative process. Students with multiple violations across categories will generally be
subject to greater levels of sanctioning. All sanctions will include the assignment of an inactive sanction (Censure,
Disciplinary Probation, Disciplinary Suspension, and Disciplinary Dismissal) as well as the assignment of one or more
active (educational) sanctions.
Addendum #2: Many sanctions will require the completion of a written reflection assignment, even when not explicitly
stated in the above chart.
Addendum #3: Violations of multiple categories in any single disciplinary incident may result in maximum sanctions.
Addendum #4: Any student accruing two or more semesters of Disciplinary Probation or Higher (Deferred Suspension,
Disciplinary Suspension, Disciplinary Dismissal) will invoke a Parental Notification sanction if the student is under 21
years of age and financially dependent.
Addendum #5: Any student accruing four or more violations during their academic career shall have fines imposed in
the amount of $100.00 per incident resulting in violations.
Addendum #6: In cases where a student has paid a fine to the court (not court fees) for an ordinance violation involving
alcohol, CR&R disciplinary fines will be waived if it is the student’s first AOD offense at Illinois State University.
Addendum #7: Reflection papers and other written components may be required with any of the sanctions noted on
this chart.
