CABS factsheet

Croydon Auto Bike Scheme (CABS)
Play Place Innov8 Community Interest Company is part of the Play Place family
of companies. We work with children, young people and communities, providing a
range of educational and leisure activities. Our services reach some of the most
disadvantaged people in their communities, often providing support where nothing
has existed before. Play Place Innov8 is based in New Addington, Croydon but we
also have established links in Bromley, Kent and parts of London.
The CABS project has been running in Croydon for over 17 years. It has had
significant successes over the years, has a well-established footprint in the
community and is highly respected by local agencies and residents alike.
We offer an attractive programme of activities that uses motor bikes as a tool to
engage positively with young people. CABS has an excellent track record for
engaging with some of the hardest to reach young people and helping them to break
the cycle of anti-social and criminal behaviour.

Accredited programme
Available on site at our Community and Family Hub in New Addington, this
interactive 12-week programme enables young people gain new skills, improve
motivation, self-esteem and decrease antisocial or criminal behaviours. Each three
hour session workshop integrates basic life and work skills with motorbike activities
and accreditation opportunities:
The motorbike – Our workshop approach enables young people to learn about the
motorbike (such as basic engine maintenance, the carburettor, suspension, wheels
and bearings). Young people are supported to learn about safety, riding skills and
the consequences of illegal behaviours; the course includes a day trip to our
specialist off-road motorbike track.
Life and work – The course integrates practical activities with life and employability
skills including optional AQA accreditations, CV writing, job search and basic work
skills (such as time keeping, health and safety, first aid and appropriate work wear).
The programme covers a range of health and well-being subjects including drugs,
alcohol and relationships. Young people are also taught the importance of
‘boundaries’ as they are required to work in a safe and appropriate fashion.
