Laminate pictures and cards for repeated use. Suggested Method: Produce personal lesson plan to ensure learning outcomes for Annual Review / Complications session are met while using ‘game’. Start session as per introduction in current version of course curriculum, reflecting on DCCT, etc. Define Microvascular and Macrovascular (i.e. damage to small blood vessels and large blood vessels respectively). Provide Micro and Macro mats. Ask group(s) to organise ‘Body Parts’ according to whether they are affected by damage to small or large vessels. (NB there are ‘red herrings’ such as lungs, liver, bones, teeth, etc which may initiate useful discussion). Clarify what should be where (some have mixed aetiology): Micro: Eyes / Kidneys / Nerves / Feet (nerves) / Digestive System / Sexual Organs (nerves). Macro: Heart / Arteries and Veins / Brain / Feet (circulation) / Sexual Organs (circulation). Define and discuss changes that occur in: Retinopathy / Nephropathy / Neuropathy / Autonomic Neuropathy, as per curriculum (e.g. use flipchart). Explain and discuss MIs / Atherosclerosis / CVAs / Ischaemia. Ask group(s) to identify risk factors for Micro and Macro VD (use cards). Discuss and clarify responses, i.e. Micro = primarily High BG (but include High BP and Smoking); Macro = mainly High Cholesterol, High BP, Smoking. Macro: BP<130/80 / Cholesterol<4mmol/l (or current recommendations) / Don’t Smoke / Healthy Weight / Physical Activity / Annual Screening (specify which tests for which problem) / Medications / ‘Healthy Diet’ / Alcohol in Moderation. Discuss and clarify responses, focusing on positive strategies for individual (link to goal-setting) and effectiveness of medical interventions such as statins, ACEIs, laser therapy.
