description appears
on the back.
Who is covered?
Any driver whose drinking habits constitute a road
safety risk or who has submitted an application
for a licence with Condition I to the Société de
l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ). This
person must not have any driving incompatibility
other than one related to alcohol.
Which licences
can be issued with Condition I?
Probationary licences and regular driver’s licences
only.
Note:
• Condition I does not authorize the operation of
a motorcycle, moped or motorized scooter.
• If your driver’s licence or the class of your licence
has been expired for 3 years or more, you will
have to pass the knowledge and road tests before
obtaining your licence or licence class again.
What is an alcohol ignition
interlock device?
An alcohol ignition interlock is a device that
prevents a vehicle’s engine from starting when it
detects alcohol in the operator’s body.
This device relies on technology similar to that
used by police officers to measure blood-alcohol
levels in the driver’s breath.
Where is it available?
The only alcohol ignition interlock device
authorized by the SAAQ is available, by lease only,
at GUARDIAN INTERLOCK SERVICE (GIS)
centres, or through participating LEBEAU VITRES
D’AUTOS branches.
To find out the location of centres or branches
that lease the device, call 1 888 252-6638.

Go to a GIS centre or a participating LEBEAU
VITRES D’AUTOS branch with a copy of
the authorization letter to sign a service
agreement for leasing an alcohol ignition
interlock device.
To get the licence, take a signed copy of the
service agreement and the authorization letter
to an SAAQ service centre.
Go back to the GIS centre or the LEBEAU
VITRES D’AUTOS branch with your licence
to have the device installed.
Warning: Holders of a licence with Condition I
can only operate a vehicle fitted with an alcohol
ignition interlock device.
Are there costs?
There are charges for installation¹, leasing the
device and for periodic checks. There is also a
charge for removing the device.
When are the
periodic checks?
Once installed, the device measures the
driver’s blood-alcohol concentration before
the engine is started and records the data.
The device must be taken to a GIS centre or a
LEBEAU VITRES D’AUTOS branch every two
months for inspection. You will be given a
report, which you may be required to submit
to the SAAQ upon request.

An additional charge may apply to some vehicles.
What are the terms and
conditions?
Terms and conditions of the alcohol ignition
interlock device program are determined by
the SAAQ and provided in an appendix of
the service agreement.
If you fail to abide by these terms and
conditions, or operate a vehicle without an
alcohol ignition interlock device:
• the vehicle you are driving may be
immediately seized for 30 or 90 days;
• you may be fined $1,500 to $3,000; and
• your licence could be suspended for
a period of 3 months or revoked.
