The Newton Free Library Offers a Wide Range of Children’s Programs
Throughout March
All programs are held in the Children’s Room unless otherwise noted:
Mother Goose on the Loose Programs:
Mother Goose on the Loose Lapsits: Songs, stories and movement for children under 2 with their
caregivers.
Space is limited. Tickets will be available ½ hour before the program.
Walkers Only:
Tuesdays, March 3, 10, 17 and 24 at 9:45 am

New Program
Magic: The Gathering
Come play Magic: The Gathering card game with like-minded kids in grades 3 to 5. Please bring no more than 3
decks of cards with you in a labeled, Ziploc bag. No trading, please. Additional decks will be available for use by
kids who come without. Accompanying adults must stay in the library, and are welcome to stay in the

Special March Programs:
Family Yoga
Our Family Yoga Class emphasizes interactive and partner poses and games for kids and adults to do
together. Designed for children ages 3-12 and their caregiver(s). No yoga experience required. Space is
limited. Tickets will be available ½ hour before the program. Saturday, March 7 at 1:00 pm. Druker Auditorium.
Spring In My Backyard
Celebrate Unplugged Month and spring with us by planting seedlings, making a bird feeder from pinecones,
discovering how to compost with wriggling red earthworms and meeting animal friends! Ages 5 & up. Cosponsored by Green Decade/Newton, Newton Community Farm and the Newton Free Library. Thursday, March
12 at 2:00 pm. Druker Auditorium.
Movie Screening: Big Hero 6
When a criminal plot threatens the hi-tech metropolis of San Fransokyo, brilliant young robotics whiz Hiro leaps
into action with his tech-savvy friends and his robot companion Baymax. Rated PG. Runtime 93 minutes.

Fibonacci Flowers
Did you know that Fibonacci numbers appear throughout nature? Even flowers petals come in Fibonacci
numbers. Learn what Fibonacci numbers are all about and create your very own Fibonacci flowers. For kids in
grades 2-4. Wednesday, March 25 at 4:30 pm. Space is limited. Tickets will be available ½ hour before the
program.
Bilingual 3-5 Storytime
Special bilingual songs, stories and finger plays in English and Spanish. Thursday, March 26 at 3:30 pm. Space
is limited. Tickets will be available ½ hour before the program.
Paper Mittens Craft
Join the Newton Free Library and the New Art Center for a crafty afternoon for ages 6-10. Use lots of cool art
supplies to create your own unique mittens or gloves that will warm up your winter. Space is limited. Tickets will

Ongoing Programs and Classes:
Poetry Writing Workshop
For ages 10-11. Mondays at 7:00 pm, February 23 and March 2, 9 and 23. For ages 12+. Monday, March 30 at
7:30 pm. Online registration (required) begins Monday, March 16.
Attention Poetry Program Participants Past & Present: We are looking for original poetry
written by children and teens for our poetry journal Poetry Palooza. Just one original poem per child/teen can be
submitted. All poets MUST have been a participant, past or present, in Jean’s Monday night poetry programs.
Submissions will be accepted March 2 - 15 by email only to Jean Holmblad at [email protected]. Please
include your name, birth date, grade, school, phone number and email address. Copies of our poetry journal will
be distributed at our Poetry Fest Monday, April 6 at 7:00 pm in Druker Auditorium.
Dance and Movement Class: The Joanne Langione Dance Center presents a music and movement class for
toddlers and preschoolers. Ages 2-5. Wednesdays, March 4 and 25 at 10:00 am. Druker Auditorium.
Read to a Dog at the Library!
Our canine friends Scout and Riley will be visiting the library to listen to children read on Wednesday, March 4,
from 4:30 to 5:30 pm, and Monday, March 9, from 3:30 to 4:30 pm. Reading appointments are for fifteen
minutes. You will be assigned your appointment time once you have registered and will be contacted with the
specifics via email. Online registration required for children in grades K-5 only. Space is limited.
Research 2.0
A class for kids in grades K-4 and their adults. Join us to learn about the many databases you can access
through the library website, how they can help you with school projects and what cool stuff you can discover.
Thursday, March 5, 6:30 pm. Second floor Computer Center. Online registration required.
Picture Books on Film. Druker Auditorium. Fridays, March 6, 13, 20 and 27 at 10:30 am.
Puppet Pals
Join Jonathan for a puppet filled storytime! There will be songs, stories and lots of puppet friends. Crafts will
follow. Space is limited. Tickets will be available ½ hour before the program.
For children ages 0-2 years. Friday, March 6 at 11:15 am.
For children ages 3-5 years. Friday, March 20 at 1:00 pm.
Music Makers
Music Makers is a co-op run program that explores the joy of music, rhyme, singing, dancing and stories in a
casual class environment. The class is structured into three 15-minute intervals. While open to all ages, it is
especially geared towards ages 6 months - 3 years. Come join the fun! Thursdays, March 12 and 26, at 10:15
am. Druker Auditorium.
3D Printing For Kids
Please join us to learn how 3D printing works by using Tinkercad to design your own three-dimensional
creation! A fun, interactive activity for kids in grades 2-5. Second floor Computer Center. Tuesday, March 17 at
2:00 pm. Space is limited. Online registration (required) begins Tuesday, February 24.
Scratch Club
Kids in grades 3-6 come for an hour to explore and work with Scratch (a free programming language designed
at MIT) to create games, animation and stories. Thursday, March 19 at 6:30 pm. Second floor Computer
Center. The club will meet monthly. Online registration (required) begins Thursday, February 26.
