Highlights:
The Football Cardinals won their third game of the season and their second in a
row, defeating Central Methodist University 24-7 on Saturday at William Jewell
College.
It was William Jewell's most complete game, with the defense nearly providing
a shutout and the offense gaining three touchdowns against a Central Methodist
defense that had held opponents to an average of less than 13 points a game.
Sophomore safety Loren Henry intercepted a pass in the second half and the
Cardinal offense capitalized with a deep touchdown pass to Lorenzo Selectman. It
was the second touchdown reception for Selectman, who had all of the Cardinals'
receiving yards. Junior Jason Agee broke the 100 yard rushing mark in the first half
as the Cardinals secured a 3-3 record in the Conference. It was the play of the
offensive and defensive linemen, though, that truly made the difference. Offensive
guards Joel Page and Matt Callaway led Jewell running backs through running lanes
the whole game. The Jewell defensive line shutdown the Central Methodist run game
and harassed Central Methodist's quarterback all day long. Freshman defensive end
Kevin Cronk recorded his first collegiate sack in the fourth quarter.

Tennis @ ITA Nationals in Ft. Myers, Florida
Three William Jewell College women tennis players traveled to Ft. Myers, Florida from October 12-17 to compete
at the ITA National Tournament. Senior Laura Curry (singles) and Sophomore Jessica Williams and First-Year student
Allison Cobb (doubles) qualified for Nationals by winning their region tournament (September 24-26 at the Plaza courts).
The top players in the country competed at the beautiful facilities of Gulf Coast University. Curry finished in 8th
place as did the Williams/Cobb doubles tandem. They ran into stiff competition, but held their own well. William Jewell
was the only NAIA school to have three qualifiers for the event.
“Laura Curry, as usual, competed very hard and was extremely focused in her matches,” Coach Rob Thomson
said. “The power of the other players in this tournament takes some time to get adjusted to, but Curry hit her usual downthe-line and cross-court winners. The school should be very proud of her individual accomplishments in her illustrious
career and now is the time to get focused on helping the entire team qualify for Nationals in the spring.”
“The young doubles team of Jessica Williams and Allison Cobb garnered great experience at Nationals that will in
no doubt help them in their bright future. To have two players complement each other well on and off the court is a
pleasant surprise. The best is yet to come from this duo.”
The tennis team will start off-season conditioning later this fall and will resume hitting indoors on January 15.

Cross Country @ NAIA Mid-States Southwestern in Winfield, Kansas
The William Jewell College cross country teams traveled far again to Winfield, KS. On Friday Oct 15, 2004 the teams
raced in the NAIA MidStates Championships hosted by Southwestern College. This was a very competitive race with a
total of 28 NAIA teams. The women ran 3.1 miles and men 5 miles against all NAIA schools.
The men's team placed an excellent 8th and beating National ranked Northwood University (#24 NAIA) and Graceland
University (past #25 NAIA)and just behind Wayland Baptist (#23 NAIA). The men ran well in very windy conditions. The
top runners were Ray Taylor (SR.)-26:37-23th, Chris Weseloh (Sr.)-27:04-31st, Luis Guzman(So.)-27:25-35th, Patrick
Hanson (So.)-27:29-38th, Greg Ziegler (Sr.)-28:10-63rd, Aaron Mick (Fr.)-28:11-65th. Chris Weseloh and Luis Guzman
stepped up and ran very well. Ray Taylor was running with a cold and Andy Wommack had to drop out due to continued
leg injury (I-T-band). We hope to get some votes for National Rankings with the results of this race for the men.
The young WJC women's team placed 17th out of 28 teams and three women had season best times in very windy
conditions. The top runners were: Alex Braden (Fr.) - 20:56(1 sec pr)-55th, Lindsey Beckwith (Fr.) -21:40-74th, Sarah
Rahal (Fr.)-22:04(55sec pr)-91st., Sara White (Fr.)-22:26 (58sec pr)-97th, Monica Silvey (So.)-22:38-101st and Katie
Heaton (So.)-27:00-120th. Alex Braden, Sarah Rahal and Sara White all had their best race of the season. The women's
5
team continues to get better each week and with our injured and ill athletes giving their best. This team has a very good
future and with a few new recruits will be a strong team for many years to come.
Both teams travel next to Atchison, KS, for the HAAC Championships race on Oct 30, 2004 against many ranked NAIA
teams. Look for the teams to run well and get some more season best times.
