11 ASIDE FRIDAY NIGHT LEAGUE FORMAT
Nationally, there is a decline in the number of teams in the adult 11v11 game. This is due to
a variety of factors linked to players’ lifestyle; working at a weekend, wanting to spend time
with family and not being able to commit to every game which affects their ability to
commit to traditional 11v11 football. Teams are folding due to financial reasons and lack of
players and volunteers. Squad sizes now need to be much bigger than they used to be to
accommodate these changes so that there are enough players to field a team. With these
increased challenges to overcome, an alternative complimentary offer needs to be created
to get more people playing football.
Across the UK, there has been the development and success of midweek 11aside leagues
played on full size 3G surfaced pitches. Derbyshire County FA are working with partners to
develop 11aside weekday leagues and deliver them as pilot leagues in the county. The
weekday 11aside leagues aim to get more people playing football and provide an
opportunity for individuals who cannot access weekend football the chance to play. The
weekday leagues do not want to compete with or take people away from weekend football,
with the overall aim of getting more people playing and meeting the needs of people’s
lifestyles.
