Voting will take place in six episodes, each using different voting systems. Your objectives are
to (1) vote your group’s preference(s) in each episode, (2) determine the movie selected as the
top choice across all groups’ votes in each episode, and (3) answer a few additional questions
about the overall preferences of the class. Your votes must be consistent in each Episode.
For many of the episodes, we will use Google Forms to submit our votes electronically. Only
one group member should vote for their entire group.
Episode 1: Plurality Voting
1) Which movie did your group vote for?
2) Which movie was selected by Plurality Voting (considering the votes of all groups)?
Episode 2: Approval Voting
1) Which movies did your group vote for?
2) Which movie was selected by Approval Voting (considering the votes of all groups)?
Episode 3: Cumulative Voting
1) Which movies did your group vote for, and how many votes did you cast for each movie?
2) Which movie was selected by Cumulative Voting (considering the votes of all groups)?
Episode 4: Borda Voting
1) Which movie was selected by Borda Voting (considering the votes of all groups)?
2) What is the total ordering of all movies as a result of Borda Voting? Include the counts of
points earned by each movie to support your results.
Episode 5: Plurality with Elimination Voting
1) Which movie was selected by Plurality with Elimination Voting (considering the votes of all
groups)?
2) Which movies were eliminated in which rounds of re-voting? Note: if there were ties for
the least number of votes, multiple movies could be eliminated in the same round.

Episode 6: Pairwise Elimination Voting
For this round, we will use the votes submitted by each group for Borda voting in Episode 4 to
determine which movies move on in each round of Pairwise Elimination Voting. Most of the
movies nominated for a Best Picture at the Oscars are given a first-round bye (except for Arrival
and Fences in order to limit the total number of movies needed for the pairings below).
Below, you should fill in who wins between each pair in each round. For example, the first
comparison is between Arrival and Captain America: Civil War, and the winner should be
written in the space to the right under Round 1. Once the entire table is filled in, the winner is
the movie listed under Round 5.
Note that Hacksaw Ridge is the first Oscar nominated movie given a first-round bye, so it is
already listed in Round 1 for you (as are the other movies receiving first round byes).

Additional Questions
1) Based on the preferences submitted for Borda Voting in Episode 4, is there a movie that
satisfies the Condorcet Condition? If yes, name the movie and show each comparison with
the other movies to support your claim (i.e., show how many people preferred the
Condorcet Winner vs. the other 24 movies).
2) If there was a Condorcet Winner, in which Episodes was the Condorcet Winner selected by
the voting system?
3) In the Pairwise Elimination Voting (Episode 6), was there any movie that was preferred by
more groups than the movie that was the ultimate winner? If yes, name the movie and list
the number of groups that preferred each of the two movies to support your claim.
4) How did your group decide on a preference ordering?
5) What did your group learn about Social Choice and Voting as a result of this Game Day?
