Driftwood Spars case study

THE DRIFTWOOD SPARS IS THE PERFECT
HOST FOR BT INFINITY FOR BUSINESS.
A GLOBAL REACH.
Although she is based by the sea in Cornwall, BT Infinity for
business is helping Louise to widen her horizons and
organise events where she invites global experts. High
on her menu are regular wine-tastings. Via the video
conferencing facility, customers can speak to a wine maker
anywhere in the world, while enjoying that region’s finest
vintage with a meal that suits it perfectly.
This coastal Cornish Pub offers visitors the opportunity
to get away from it all. However, they can still keep in
touch with a super fast broadband connection.
REACHING NEW MARKETS.
The key to survival in a competitive marketplace is to adapt
and diversify. Following this strategy has helped the Driftwood
Spars go from strength to strength. Situated in St Agnes,
Cornwall, it started life as a pub but has since branched out.
Today, the Driftwood Spars has a 4-star rated bed & breakfast
accommodation, a restaurant and microbrewery. Plus, it holds
weddings, is a venue for live music and has recently started to
offer conferencing facilities.
All this activity helps to keep landlady Louise Treseder and her
team very busy. However, one downside of the business’s rural
location is that there is no mobile phone signal. BT Infinity for
business is giving the Driftwood Spars a much-needed link to
the outside world.
“People are getting more and more dependent on using their
mobiles for interacting and communicating with the world, and
we have no signal,” says Louise. “The fact that we have fibre
broadband, which is very reliable, means that our customers
can communicate with the rest of the world, with Facebook,
twitter and WhatsApp. As smart phones evolve, it makes it
easier for people to come here and use their phones to stay in
touch with family, friends and colleagues.”
“It’s essential that our fibre broadband is reliable. When
we’re doing our video conferencing I have 40 customers
here, ready to enjoy a glass of wine with their meal,” says
Louise. “If it drops out or the audio or visuals are no good, I
have 40 really dissatisfied customers. We’ve been really
lucky in that every time we’ve done it, it’s been spot on –
really good connection – and it’s reliable,” she says.
While Cornwall is a magnet for holidaymakers, tourism is a
seasonal market. This has prompted Louise to think about
the ways she can catch the attention of business customers.
As a first step, she is hoping to recruit an events/weddings/
conferences organiser, who will help to develop the
Driftwood Spars as a conferencing centre for businesses.
She believes it is an ideal way to grow her business, boost
the local economy and create jobs for local people.
I’D SAY FIBRE BROADBAND IS
ESSENTIAL FOR ME RUNNING
THE BUSINESS HERE.
IT’S ESSENTIAL THAT OUR FIBRE BROADBAND HERE IS
RELIABLE. WHEN WE’RE DOING OUR VIDEO CONFERENCING
I HAVE 40 CUSTOMERS HERE.

TAILOR-MADE SERVICES.
“We want to encourage business clients to come down midweek. They’ll still be able to work from here, even though they’re down
by the beach,” explains Louise. “They can connect via our superfast broadband and they’ll be able to connect to their work
servers and with colleagues anywhere around the world.” To give business customers even more choice, Louise also plans to offer
team-building events. She will link up with businesses nearby, which specialise in outdoor activities. Together, they hope to grow
their enterprises, increase their profits and help St Agnes to attract more business customers.
Louise is happy to say that none of this would be possible without BT. “Just over 2 years ago we got fibre broadband – before that
our internet was just dire. It was very frustrating, customers were constantly complaining about how they couldn’t access it. We
were promising them free Wi-fi and it just wasn’t happening at all,” she says. “Luckily a BT flyer came through. I investigated it
and thought this is what I need; proper broadband for my business, my customers and me. I haven’t looked back since.”
