Monthly Manufacturing Performance – August 2016
Highlights

On a year-on-year basis, Singapore’s manufacturing output increased 0.1% in
August 2016. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output grew 2.3%.

On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, manufacturing output was
unchanged in August 2016. Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output grew
1.5%.

On a year-on-year basis, manufacturing output increased 0.1% in August 2016.
Excluding biomedical manufacturing, output grew 2.3%. On a three-month moving
average basis, manufacturing output declined 0.9% in August 2016, compared to a
year ago. On a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis, manufacturing output was
unchanged in August 2016 compared to July 2016.

Performance by cluster

Output of the precision engineering cluster increased 11.6% on a year-on-year basis
in August 2016. The machinery & systems segment grew 17.1% on the back of higher
output in semiconductor related equipment, as well as mechanical engineering work.
The precision modules & components segment also grew 3.3%, supported by higher
output in electronic connectors and dies, moulds, jigs, tools & fixtures. On a year-todate basis, output of the precision engineering cluster declined 1.6% compared to the
same period a year ago.

The electronics cluster’s output increased 10.8% in August 2016 compared to the
same month last year.
The semiconductors and other electronic modules &
components segments grew 19.7% and 3.1% respectively, but this was partially offset
by declines in the rest of the electronic segments. In the first eight months of the year,
output of the electronics cluster grew 8.7% compared to the same period last year.

The chemicals cluster’s output grew 1.8% on a year-on-year basis in August 2016.
Growth in the cluster was supported by higher output in the other chemicals (15.4%),
petroleum (12.3%) and specialties (11.3%) segments. The other chemicals segment
registered higher output in fragrances while higher output in mineral oil additives
contributed to the growth in the specialties segment. The petrochemicals segment
declined 17.1% as output was affected by plant maintenance shutdowns.
Cumulatively, the chemicals cluster fell 2.4 % in the first eight months of this year
compared to the same period in 2015.

The general manufacturing industries cluster’s output decreased 1.6% year-on-year
in August 2016. The food, beverages & tobacco segment grew 8.1% while the
miscellaneous industries and printing segments contracted 5.4% and 20.3%
respectively. Output of the printing segment declined as demand for commercial

printing remained weak while the miscellaneous industries segment reported lower
output of fibreglass products, wooden furniture & fixtures and construction related
materials. Cumulatively, the cluster’s output fell 1.9% in the first eight months of the
year compared to the same period in 2015.

Output of the biomedical manufacturing cluster contracted 8.4% in August 2016,
compared to the same period a year ago. The medical technological segment grew
12.1% with higher export demand for medical instruments. However, this was offset
by a 14.1% fall in the pharmaceuticals segment due to lower production of active
pharmaceutical ingredients and biological products. In the first eight months of the
year, the biomedical manufacturing cluster increased 6.8% compared to the same
period last year.

The transport engineering cluster’s output shrank 16.8% year-on-year in August 2016.
The marine & offshore engineering segment declined 31.4%, which offset the gains
made in the land transport (11.4%) and aerospace (4.8%) segments. Rig building
activities and demand for oilfield & gasfield equipment remained weak amidst the low
oil price environment, resulting in the decline of the marine & offshore engineering
segment.
On a year-to-date basis, output of the transport engineering cluster
decreased 18.0% compared to the same period a year ago.
