Principal’s Welcome
E ngā mana, e ngā reo, e ngā hau e whā, nau mai, haere mai.
Haere mai ki te kura, Te Huruhuru Ao o Horomaka.
Kia ora koutou. Talofa. Kia Orana. Malo e lelei. Bula.
Fakaalofa atu.
Greetings to all and welcome to our school.
Hornby HS is a place where every student is known and valued as an individual
and where student learning and success matter. A special feature of our
school is the “stepped consistency” of our curriculum which means that over
the seven years at our school each student progresses through his or her
various levels of learning and social development through personalised
learning and career pathways.
Since its opening, our school has had significant community support and,
reflecting this, we have a distinctive identity, based on strong family and
community relationships. Therefore, we are proud to be an inclusive, friendly
school where student wellbeing, security and safety are paramount.
At our school all students can make their mark – academic, cultural, sporting –
and set their direction for life after secondary school. A Hornby HS leaver is
confident and well-prepared for the future. Our leavers join thousands of
former Hornby HS students who achieve personal success both within New
Zealand and overseas.
“Caring, progressive and individualised education”: our school vision is in
action every day. Please contact us or make a time to visit if you have any
further questions. We look forward to meeting you and working with you.
Ngā mihi nui,

Hornby High School Vision:
Caring, progressive and individualised education
A 21st Century School for 21st Century Learners
At Hornby High School our focus is ‘getting it right’ for your child by providing
each individual student with a safe, rich, varied and forward-thinking modern
educational environment. Our Junior College is structured to allow easy
entry to Hornby HS at either Yr 7 or Yr 9.
Curriculum appropriate for their learning levels.
A personally-responsive curriculum: students receive a “stepped curriculum” –
the content – that is targeted at their present learning levels and the next step,
their developmental stages and their interests. We take a strengths-based
approach building on what individual knows and can do now.
Pastoral care.
We have specific staff with responsibility to oversee the pastoral care of the Yr
7-8 students just as we do for the other levels in the school. As a school
community, student wellbeing is a key focus for us. In May 2012 ERO reviewed
our school and reported:
Relationships between students and staff and among students are respectful,
supportive and inclusive. Classroom cultures are helping students to focus
well on learning. Students report that they feel safe and included.
Teaching appropriate for your child’s developmental levels.
Hornby HS employs staff with expertise and experience in teaching Yr7-8 and
these students are in a home room with their home room teacher for most of
the day. We also provide specialist teachers and facilities (e.g. Science) where
appropriate.
New and re-developed
facilities and spaces.
As part of the Ministry
of Education master
plan our whole school
is to be re-built. Our
students, Yr 7-13, will
experience new and
remodelled buildings
to provide modern
learning environments
for our 21st Century
learners. Our students
will be in the best of current classroom design and have full access to
technology. In such environments learning can be individualised and students
see pathways for themselves that engage and inspire.
