Hurling Golf Overview A new and unique sport combining two of the most popular sports played in Ireland today! Same concept as golf, put the ball in the hole in the least amount of shots possible! As the sports are quite different in many respects but share a lot of similar skills required, they compliment each other quite well to create an interesting hybrid! Can be played on any golf course, therefore facilities are not an issue! Rationale Incorporates various key skills of Junior Cycle such as staying well, communicating, working with others, and managing oneself. (NCCA) Rationale With Physical Activity levels at an all-time low worldwide, it is a low intensity activity yet a fun and competitive one which could be used as a starting point for getting students active. A staggering statistic shows that over half (52%) of Europeans either seldom or never engage in physical activity. Appeal to Students The fact that it may be played as a team or individually adds that sense of teamwork as well as competition that teenagers thrive on. It is also comforting for those not familiar with the skills of hurling that excellent proficiency is not required to partake in the game. Hurling is also a very physical sport, which may not appeal to certain students, this sport takes away the physical aspect while remaining to work on the skills aspect of it. Appeal to Students With hurling being one of the most popular sports in the country, many schools would be well populated with players that play outside of school. While having a keen interest in the one sport, it gives them an opportunity to sample the sport of golf and give it a try, where they might not get the chance otherwise. In turn, it also gives students with a golfing interest a chance to view it from a different perspective.
