What Is a Gang?
 Section 71.01(d) of the Texas Penal Code defines a
criminal street gang as “three or more persons
 having a common identifying sign or symbol or an
identifiable leadership who continuously or
 regularly associate in the commission of criminal
activities.”

 Security, protection and a sense of belonging

Lack of family, community, or youth
 Support system (too much unsupervised time)
 Sense of status or respect
 Living in a gang infested community or having family members in a gang


 Financial opportunities (i.e. profits from drug distribution and other illegal
activities)

 Thrill seeking
 Media glorifying violence
Signs of Gang Involvement
 General signs of gang involvement may include:

• Using hand signs;
• Assuming a new nickname or street name;
• Substance abuse;
• Truancy or poor school performance;
• Frequent negative contact with police;
• Unexplained income; and
• Unexplained signs, symbols, or graffiti on personal
property, in the youth’s bedroom, or near
his or her home
