INFORMATION PACKAGE
DRAYTON VALLEY THUNDER
JUNIOR ‘A’ HOCKEY
A message from the Billet Coordinator
Welcome back to another exciting year of Thunder Hockey. We are looking forward to yet another
exciting season of Thunder Hockey and are looking forward to meeting all our new and existing billet
families.
Billeting should be a very exciting and rewarding experience for all those willing to open up their homes
to dedicated players of the Drayton Valley Thunder. Many families who have billeted in the past usually
look back at their experience with fond memories. In fact, many families still keep in contact with their
players and families as they move through the ranks of college and professional hockey and beyond.
However, in reality not every player/family will match up completely successful. Sometimes chemistry
and/or expectations might be lacking to continue on with the relationship in a positive manner for one
or both parties. When this happens, we will make our best attempt towards making the necessary
changes to ensure everyone is happy and comfortable with their arrangements.
Whether you are new, or a long time resident of Drayton Valley, billeting is a great way to meet people.
When you walk into the Omniplex for a Thunder game you will notice small groups of people standing
around talking. These groups are usually the billet families talking with other billets and/or the player’s
families.
Each billet family is paid a monthly amount of $330 per player to house a player in their home. Also,
each family is given two season tickets and two playoff tickets per player billeted.
We would be more than happy to discuss the aspects of billeting with you and welcome you to
the Thunder family. Anyone interested in a rewarding experience by billeting a Thunder player,
is encouraged to contact the Thunder Office at 780-542-7845 for more information.
Sincerely,
Coach Mike Mueller

Introduction to the World of Billeting
As a billet family it is always helpful to have some information close at hand as we make our way
through the season. Included in this package you will find:
1.
A Thunder Game Schedule which will include all home and away games.
2.
The Player Code of Conduct that will be signed by the player revealing the team’s expectation of
him and his responsibilities to the hockey club.
3.
A contact information sheet, which will provide to you important personal data on your player.
4.
A House Rules form which can be drawn up by yourself and the player so that your expectations
within the household can be clearly articulated.
5.
A billet list that provides the names and phone numbers of other players and their billets.
We hope that by providing this billet package to you, the rules of conduct expected by the players both
at the rink and off the ice will be clearly outlined. The balance of the information in this package is
simply provided in an effort to make the billeting experience a positive one and to allow you and your
family to experience as little disruption in your home while you provide the rich nurturing environment
for the players of the club.
If you have any questions regarding the contents of this package or issues surrounding the billeting
process, don’t hesitate to contact the Thunder office and/or Billet Coordinator.

Drayton Valley Thunder
Player Conduct and Expectations
The Drayton Valley Thunder hockey players, coaches, trainers, and other related hockey personnel will
represent the hockey club’s tradition of excellence both on and off the ice as ambassadors of the club.
As an official member of the Drayton Valley Thunder, each person must assume the responsibility of this
honor and hold this designation in the highest regard doing what he or she can to promote the Thunder
a first class junior hockey club.
1.
Weekday Activity
The Thunder Board of Directors requires that each member of the hockey club be involved in a regular
weekday activity. In the vast majority of cases, this would mean every team member would either be
enrolled in high school or the Pembina Consortium or be gainfully employed on minimally a part-time
basis. If not in school it is then the player’s responsibility to be at breakfast club and scheduled team
workouts.
Education
Club members participating in educational institutions are expected to attend regularly and are
expected to keep up education grades to pass courses participated in. Club members having graduated
from a secondary institution will be encouraged to enrol into the Pembina Consortium or gain
employment.
Education institution attendance records will be reported to the Thunder office from associated
educational institutions. Telephone calls from any educational institution to a player billet’s home
regarding attendance or any other matter will be reported to the Educational Advisor as soon as
possible. The Educational Advisor will report such incidents to the President and General Manager for
appropriate action.
The Educational Advisor, Brenda Prentice will be in regular contact with the educational institution
personnel reviewing attendance, marks, study habits, and/or attitudes.
The Drayton Valley Thunder strongly believes in secondary education and will help any player to achieve
this accomplishment.
Employment
Club members choosing to be employed rather than attend an educational institution will agree to
random checks of attendance at the place of employment and random checks of work performance.
2.
Evening Activity – Curfews (**up to Coach’s Discretion)
Players will be required in their home residence by 11 pm Monday to Friday other than a weekday home
game or pre-game night.
Players will be required to be in their home residence 1.5 hours after completion of game on a weekday
home game.
Players will be required to be in their home residence by 10 pm a pre-game night.
Players will be required to be in their home residence 1.5 hours after a weekend home game.
Any changes to the curfews by the General Manager or Coach must be agreed upon by each individual
player billet or home parent.
**Please note that curfews imposed by coaching staff are subject to change.
3.
Alcohol Policy
a.
Billets and players should not allow their homes to be used as a “party house”
b.
The Thunder organization discourages players from drinking alcoholic beverages
c.
Only players 18 years or older may be permitted to consume moderate amounts of
alcoholic beverages with a meal
d.
No player will consume any alcohol within 48 hours of a scheduled game
e.
Abuse of alcohol or otherwise breaking these rules may result in an immediate
suspension and/or loss of privileges
f.
Billets may establish their own rules respecting a player’s consumption of alcohol within
their home provided they do not contradict these rules or others established by the
Organization or Coach during the year.
4.
Dress Code and Personal Care
a.
Players and other hockey personnel are expected to be neatly dressed and clean at all
times.
b.
Apparel for all games is dress shoes, slacks, shirt and tie. (track suits may be worn for
travel)
Any change to the above stated dress code will be granted only on the authority of the General Manager
of the hockey club.
5.
Community Participation
All players will actively participate in community functions as designated by the Board of Directors or the
Marketing Manager through the General Manager. Examples of some of these functions could be
assistance to the Minor Hockey Association, schools, food bank, Santa’s Anonymous, etc.
6.
Billets
The Board of Directors requires that each Thunder requiring a billet be placed into a billets home as
soon as possible.
Billets are to be paid according to the honorarium set by the Board of Directors along with two season
tickets for each billet player billeted.
A Billet Coordinator oversees this relationship and maintains consistent communication with the Coach,
the billets, and the players.
Player billets have the right to have their player adapt to the activities of their household – should the
billet wish to maintain the honor of having the use of the billetor’s home. It is the player’s responsibility
to help with household duties as designated by their billet. These duties include keeping their rooms
clean, helping with food preparation and clean up, snow removal and any other duty that should arise.
Situations of conflict should be brought to the attention of the Billet Coordinator should a solution not
be reached between the billet and the player. It is the responsibility of the hosting billet to report any
situations to the Billet Coordinator when a player’s action is inappropriate (i.e. Violation of curfew,
alcohol consumption, disrupting the household, school work truancy, etc.) If a billet is going away
overnight or longer, please contact a Billet Coordinator so that other arrangements can be made for the
player.
7.
Diet
Players are to have a well-balanced, high carbohydrate diet. Players are discouraged from eating junk
food.
It is expected that billets will provide regular meals and other amenities to players while they are in the
home as they would to their own children. Meals should be wholesome and varied as would be
expected of a young athlete. Players should eat their pre-game meals 3-4 hours prior to game time. If
the billets are absent during this time, then the player should be able to prepare their own meal, and
failing that, hopefully a meal can be prepared in advance and reheated.
8.
Telephone
Players wishing to make long distance phone calls using club phones or billet phones are responsible for
their own phone bill. These bills are due immediately upon receipt by the Thunder or the billets home.
Players will be advised that the Drayton Valley Thunder will not be held responsible for unpaid phone
bills.
9.
Discrimination and Harassment
Discrimination and harassment is behaviour that compromises the integrity of another person and is
detrimental to morale, productivity, or personal well being. This may be presented in actions or remarks
relating to race, ethnic origin, color, religion, age, sex, sexual orientation, handicap or other ways which
are intended to be intimidating, humiliating or malicious.
Such behaviour can have serious repercussions on the team’s environment, for the individuals involved
and those around them and will not be tolerated.
10.
Other
Players are expected to attend all gymnasium sessions and dry-land training sessions. Player girlfriends
or female companions are not welcome during official Thunder activities unless agreed upon by the
Coach and General Manager. At no time will girlfriends or female companions be allowed in the
Thunder dressing room, travel vehicle or away game accommodations. It is strongly recommended that
player’s girlfriends not stay at the billets home. All players will treat community residents with respect
and integrity.
General Conduct and Consequences
Players of the Drayton Valley Thunder are ambassadors of the organization. Behaviour deemed
inappropriate and/or in violation of this agreement will be subject to review by the General Manager
and/or the disciplinary committee and subject to appropriate discipline, up to and including expulsion
from the club.
HOUSE RULES
The following rules are ones negotiated between the player and the billet family. Speaking from
experience you may want to outline with the player rules that are consistent with what you have already
have in place for any guests or visitors in your home. Examples may be limiting phone calls after a
certain time, whether you are going to permit computer access or not and if you do what time
restrictions you may want to enforce. It is also intended to assist in apportioning the household chores
that you expect the player to assist with. In other words this form can be as limited or as expansive as
you see fit.
I_______________________, acknowledge that I have reviewed the enclosed rules and expectations in
the home and agree to abide by them.
