2010 In association with Falcon Sport, a parent run sports organisation under the guidance of the North Sydney Boys High School P&C. NSBHS has a long tradition of excellence in football. Many accomplished footballers have passed through the school, including a substantial number of old-boys who continue to represent the club. All teams enjoyed success at various times of the season and three teams finished the season as winners. A particularly warm welcome is extended to the Year 7 group playing in the U13 competition. After a particularly tough regular season, the 13A team performed extremely well to finish close runners-up on Gala Day 2010. One team won the minor premiership for their competition – 18B Division 3 Two teams were runners-up in their competitions – 14A Division 3 18A Division 1 One more team was (close to) runners-up in their competition – 15A Division 2 The All-Age Division 6 squad (firsts) won their season-ending finals series. The 18A side has represented Falcon Football with great honour. A regular season runners-up result in Division 1 – and winners of the KDSA Presidents Shield knockout competition has reinforced the growing reputation that Falcon Football has in this age group. To all of this season’s Year 12 Falcon footballers, good luck for the upcoming HSC exams. Consider playing All-Age Falcon Football next season, as the Year 12 of 2009 did this season. This season has been a stellar one for football coaches at this club. For the first time in the club’s recorded history, none of our junior teams were coached by team parents. All bar one of the teams were coached by either current or ex-students of NSBHS. The one exception was Mr Robinson (NSBHS staff) who has now completed a fantastic stint of four seasons with our 2010 Year 12 group. Over the past 4 seasons they have achieved minor premierships in Division 2 and Division 1; Division 1 runners-up the past two seasons; State Cup success; Champion-ofChampions representation and the KDSA Presidents Shield 2010. Congratulations ! This club is also blessed with an extremely talented and committed ex-student coach. The club now has its inaugural Head Coach in Justin McMahon. The developing coaching pedigree of Falcon Football is largely due to the outstanding example set by Justin. Thanks ! Thanks to the many parents who have helped out with managing, refereeing and team support. A huge vote of thanks to those parents volunteering to join the committee and play vital roles in the running of another enjoyable season of Falcon Football. Special mention to the White family for managing the ground dressing requirements at the club home ground at Wellington Road, East Lindfield. For next season, as Falcon Sport is an entirely parent run body, we will need more parents to be involved in club management. All parents are encouraged to volunteer to assist with the various club activities. Please approach the club president with any offers of assistance. More volunteers will enable the club to share the responsibilities more equitably. All the best for the off-season and we look forward to another exciting season of Falcon Football next year. Ups, downs, twists, and turns. The season started off in true NSBHS Year 7 style. A team of boys with mixed skills and qualities, from a range of different football backgrounds. It was going to take some time to gel together as a cohesive team. The season started of with a spirited 0-8 loss. The next few weeks the boys improved with each performance, 0-4, 0-2, 1-3 and 0-1. But the following week we had only 9 players, which was always going to be tough. The middle part of the season we had only 9 or 10 players per match, boys were overseas, sick, or injured. However, throughout this tough time the commitment and team camaraderie was brilliant from the whole team. At training we continued to work on ball skills, positioning and team work. I could see the boys were improving and growing in confidence against much bigger and stronger opposition. As can be expected, morale was a bit down coming to the end of the season, it would not have been unexpected for our season to simmer off. However, our second last game we lost 3-4 to Berowra in what was a very exciting game and one of high emotion from all the players and spectators. Buoyed by the renewed confidence and the luxury of a full squad, in our final game we held Lindfield (3rd) to 0-0 at half time. We had a feeling of hope and all the boys were pumped up ready to give it their best. We took the lead, only to have the opposition equalize soon after. We should have had a couple more goals, but it wasn’t to be, and we ended up losing 1-2. Gala Day. At the start of the day we had both Johnno (finger) and Danny (ankle) on the sideline with injuries. The first game we won 1-0 through a great team goal finished off by Lewis. A fantastic performance by Stanley as goalkeeper insured we kept a clean sheet. Everyone was very excited to have won our first game of the season. In the next game Danny had finally convinced coach, manager and parents that he was fit enough to play goal keeper, a tough decision seeing that he had been injured numerous times this season. The second, and final pool game, was a must win game to progress further. Being the last game of the season we tried a few players in different positions. Brandon who all season did a wonderful job as left back was pushed up to striker. We won an exciting game 4-0, and Brandon scored a superb hat-trick! Absolutely amazing ! We went on to play the final of our gala day group against a very good girls rep team and were beaten on corners. For finishing runners up the team went up on stage to collect their pennants. The day was a fantastic experience and one we will never forget ! Overall the season was fantastic. Thank you so much to our wonderful manager Bernard who did a fantastic job of organising the boys. Thank you to all the parents for your support of the team. I had a wonderful time coaching the boys, and am already looking forward to Season 2011. -3- Adam: Adam played on the right hand side of midfield. He is a great passer and provided many assists to our strikers. His link up play with the strikers to unlock defenses was a joy to watch. Brandon: Brandon did a great job at left back all season. Lots of energy and tireless defensive work was vital in our team plans. A great hat trick at Gala Day was a just reward for a player who improved a lot this season. Danny: Danny is a very competitive, emotional and highly skilled player. His attacking mindset was great for the team, beating numerous defenders all season. If he can stay fit Danny adds flair and style to the team. Derek: One of the highest skilled players in the team. Derek’s dribbling and ball control is exceptional. Often only half the size of his opponents, he is a very tough competitor and great team player. Frank: A true character and very enthusiastic player. Frank played in the centre of defense and was in charge of organising our defensive line. Made many goal saving tackles throughout the season. Ivan: Ivan was invaluable at right back this year. On many occasions his first time clearances stopped attacking moves from developing. Ivan showed significant improvement and will improve further next season. Isaac: The midfield maestro. Isaac did a fantastic job in the centre of midfield. He likes to get forward and plays in the playmaker role, orchestrating our attacks. Johnno: Takes out the Golden Boot, top goal scorer for the season and a superb striker. Johnno has a great eye for goal and had a great season up front. Kerry: Kerry had an excellent season at centre back. Holding the team together and forming a great defensive partnership with Frank was very important. His tackling was top class and he lead by example in defense. Lewis: Lewis is a fantastic player and team member. He played in both midfield and defense where his ball skills and defensive work was outstanding. An outstanding season for Lewis. Stanley: Takes out the Golden Glove, a great asset to the team between the posts. Stanley was also a great attacking option when playing out of goals as well. Tony: Tony’s vision and reading of the game is superb. Tony is a fantastic defender and an excellent passer of the ball. I’m looking forward to seeing Tony improve and grow as a player. Despite this, through either good luck, or design, the resulting team was a wonderful mix of players who through their individual strengths filled all positions on the field with skill and enthusiasm right from game 1. The season started with an 8-0 win and by mid-season we found ourselves second in the division having lost only one game - to the ultimate winners of the division. Highlights included other high scoring wins of 7-1, 6-0, 6-1 and 5-1, but also hard fought contests resulting in a 3-2 win and a 0-0 draw. At this point in the season the division was split in two to allow for more even games. The following weeks were much more even contests and we finished the season with 3 wins and 2 losses and a 1-0 loss to a higher division team in a friendly match on the final weekend. Overall the 14As finished the season with 10 wins, 1 draw, and 4 losses and scored a total of 49 goals with 18 scored against us. All players in the 14A team filled their roles game after game with skill and a drive to win. We had 11 goal scorers during the season with the main goal scorers being Richard with 13 closely followed by James G with 10. However, whilst their goals were impressive the most memorable goals of the season were those scored by Kiran (a strike from the mid line that went over the goalies head) and David C (a massive kick from half way). The goal scorers for the team were Richard (13), James G (10), David G (5), James W and Jeffery (4 each), Imran, Thomas and Mario (3 each), Leo (2), and David C and Kiran (1 each). Whilst our goal scoring was great, the fact that we only had 18 goals scored against us all season is a testament to the skills of our defensive players. Maurice was fantastic in goal and in several games was the difference between a win and a loss. Osborn was amazingly fast in defence and ran down almost every attacker from the opposition teams. David C, Nathan, Andrew and Connor completed a back line that was almost impenetrable. Overall, the season was a highly entertaining and successful one. The parents were treated to games played with a high level of skill and teamwork, but also played with fairness and in a spirit that was a credit to North Sydney Boys. Thanks must go to Leo Dong from year 11 who coached the boys at their weekly training session and to August Goebl who filled the role of coach at the games with patience and diplomacy. We again saw terrific commitment in the preseason, allowing us to start our preparations before Christmas. After being promoted last year, 2010 was something of an unknown quantity come April, but the boys got off the blocks to a great start with a 4-1 away win against Northbridge. The most pleasing thing this year was not only the terrific run of results, but the quality of football played by the boys. We’re are starting to get close to the type of football we aim to play and dominated almost every game we played this season in terms of possession and creating chances. We had hit the top of table by mid season and then embarked on possibly the worst run of luck I have ever seen. Our two top scorers Chris and Jayden injured (one for 6 weeks and the other for the rest of the season) within a week. Commanding Centre Back Liam out for the rest of the season the week after, our keeper and captain injuring himself (twice) and missing 8 boys for our top of the table game with Hornsby. Due to injuries the longest run of matches with a full team was four. That run of matches included a top of the table victory and a record for the month of 4 wins, 0 draws, 0 losses, 13 for, 0 against. In fact, we didn’t concede a single goal with our full squad this season. I would like to thank the parents for their wonderful support of the boys each and every week. Their willingness to drive to Mount Colah at 7am with coffee in hand is awe inspiring. I would like to extend special thanks to Anne, who is the best manager I have come across in all my years of football. I have absolutely no doubt that the boys are up to the challenge of division 1 next season, and I can’t wait to begin. Aaron: Aaron played as one of two defensive midfielders for the most part of the season. His reading of the game and awareness has improved significantly this season. When on his game his distribution is incredible. Ben: Our Captain and Keeper. Ben was exemplary this season. His positioning is absolutely first class and his distribution is phenomenal. I can attribute 4 goals this season scored on counter attacks that started with Ben throwing the ball over half way on the full. Chris: Instrumental defensive midfielder. Chris’ awareness of his teammates positioning is second to none. He is the ultimate teammate. Our right back told me after one game that he is more comfortable going forward and supporting the attack because he knows that when he needs it, Chris is there to help him. Before his injury, Chris had only dropped points in 1 game (when everyone was away). He was our second top scorer this season, including a left footed volley from outside the box against Hornsby. Daniel: Our left winger returned for another stellar season this year. Daniel always seems to be open on the left side of the pitch. This year he added some runs into the inside channels and a goal scoring touch to his comprehensive wing play. Dawen: When most centre backs win the ball, they launch it back where it came from, but not Dawen. In most cases he’ll keep possession with a simple pass, but if there is space ahead, he’s off. Few sights can compare to seeing Dawen in full flight, and the faces on the opposition players as he passes them. Another terrific season from our consistently outstanding centre back. -8- Denzel: Coming back from a long term injury lay off is always a challenge. Playing in the same team as your older brother is possibly an even bigger challenge. Denzel had a terrific 2010. As he gradually rediscovered his touch, trickery and speed he became an influential member of the side in the back end of the season. Henry: The epitome of the overlapping fullback. Henry is every bit Dani Alves that he is U15s player. Bombing up and down the right flank almost non stop for a full game is hard work, but Henry makes it look easy. An interception, pass and overlap became a regular occurrence this season. He even managed to get himself on the scoresheet from an overlap. Humphrey: Humphrey isn’t your typical centre forward. He’s not tall, he doesn’t run 100m in 10 seconds either, but when you average almost 1 assist every game for an entire season you’re doing something right. From dropping deep to popping up on the left flank Humphrey isn’t what opponents expect on a Saturday morning. An excellent and selfless season from the man up front. Jayden: Did someone find their scoring boots this year or what! 5 goals in the first 2 games of the season set Jayden up for an outstanding record of over a goal per game. He also showed on more than one occasion that he is a more than handy goalkeeper, with a terrific save against Berowra justifying that. Lachlan: Lachlan sadly left to go overseas mid year, but deserves a mention for his work rate wherever he was placed along the front line. Even playing up year his determination to win the ball for his team was admirable. Liam: Baresi, Scirea, Beckenbauer. Some players play the game like they wrote it. This season you could have added Whitfield to that list. Liam was phenomenal this season. Playing up a year is normally a struggle, but from day 1 there were no doubts Liam could more than step up. It didn’t matter how fast, or how tall the opposing strikers were, because Liam would always get to the ball first. His anticipation and distribution from the back was outstanding and his partnership with Dawen was a joy to behold. Michael: Michael is one name I don’t think I have used all season. To us, he is Fowler, consummate playmaker and midfield extraordinaire. Some of the passes, goals and tackles Fowler pulled off this season certainly warranted Instant Replays at KDSA games. Probably the most regularly man-marked player in the association. Nathan: The sort of player every coach needs. The guy who you can give any role in any position at any time and be 100% confident the job will be done, and done well. Nathan spent this season playing centre forward, on either wing, defensive mid and right or centre back, on occasion in the course of one game. His speed was lethal for any offside trap an opponent played, but at the other end complimented our high defensive line wonderfully. His improvement skill wise and in terms of his understanding of the game was outstanding this season. Neil: Last year I raved about Neil’s consistency, nothing has changed. It never mattered who played on the right for our opponents, Neil was better. He was quicker, stronger and always managed to win the ball, before playing it calmly out from the back. Renny: One of the safest players in possession I’ve ever coached, with a liking for the 40m pass with the outside of the boot. Renny is a great tackler and a terrific passer of the ball. His dedication to the team is outstanding and a wonderful asset to have. Varun: Another new player this season. Varun started the season with a cross from the left which set up a goal against Northbridge. Whether out on the left flank taking players on, defending at left back or centre back on occasion or most often shielding the back four, Varun was wonderfully consistent in all areas this season and is a great asset to the side. Coach -9- Back (from Left): Nathan Xie, Daniel Reti, Jayden Levy, Renny Huang, Ben Hanley, Neil Bisht, Dawen Lin and our fearless leader and coach Justin McMahon Front: Henry Yuan, Denzel Yuan, Liam Whitfeld, Varun Randev, Michael Fowler. The team has endured an extremely tough competition against other teams in the division. The top four teams in the division were much stronger than our team. However, the team never gave up, and they improved from each game and played a better game next time. We started off looking to play soccer, we ended up better people. The under 16s Falcon soccer season is not what you might call a glorious one, outranked, outmatched and often outnumbered, I would have to admit that we did take a few beatings and also scored some hits in return. However, like almost all setbacks, a valuable lesson could be learnt, these such instances become what is called experience. The Under 16B soccer team was made up of a diverse group of people in the various aspects of interests, experience and personality, but what brought us together was a soccer team and a passion for the sport. Bringing back the memories of freshly washed uniforms covered in mud and grass, the blue to black bruises running down your leg, the hours of training, the time and commitment, early morning games, waking up at 6, from the good to the bad and from the bad to the worse, you may ask why you are doing this. Soccer is but a word, or a game, but what it brings us is more important, as the game itself. On and off the field what soccer brought us was enjoyment. On behalf of the team to this point I would like to thank our coach David for the effort he put into the team. From the weekly training sessions comprised of tiring and sometimes bizarre drills that were nevertheless effective, to the intuitive and insightful coaching during the Saturday morning games, you have made the team successful all along. The Saturday matches challenged us individually and as a team, but the spirit to never give up always prevailed. In the times where you are just about to score that goal or in times even where you are losing in bad conditions or when you find yourself going up against a 7 foot beast, we grit our teeth and still kept pushing a little more and making the other team work that much harder to get their way. As the days become weeks and weeks become months and we get to the end of the season, it becomes inevitable that we have improved a great deal and played more like a team which led to instances of stunning plays and magnificent goals from our team. In the end, through the smiles and laughter, the pain and the tears, I would like to sincerely thank the parents, organisers and the players who made this all happen, and to make this year a truly enjoyable season. Newly promoted to the first division having won division two the previous year, the team had to step up to a higher level. The year started promisingly, with strong performances in the pre-season and in the opening few fixtures as Teddy (Jakes Spiderman) Van Leer was inspirational in goal and attackers Charles Leu and Ben Lyon, who worked tirelessly every game, delivered for us. The creative Nathan Teoh controlled the midfield and was supported endlessly by the hard working flankers Max Gottlieb and Angus Gibbs. James Every led the backs with Joel Leu and Treves Li also holding the fort. However, results started to go against us as problems with attendance (including the coach) and a succession of rain-affected training sessions halted the team’s progress and momentum garnered from early on in the season. Although the forlorn weeks yielded poor results, the boys maintained their enthusiasm and stuck together for every game. Rohan (Sexy Hair) Rathod and Mitch Proctor selflessly played any position required by the coach in an attempt to find a solution to the drought. The return of Andrew Kim and introduction of German exchange student Simon Liebermann bolstered the back line but the boys’ admirable commitment unfortunately did not provide us with the deserved results. Toward the end of the season, the Falcons began to play more relaxed and free flowing football. Tony Paik was back to his defence-terrorising best aided by the solid Freddie Xiao who deserves recognition for his commitment. Danny McGowen found himself a new home at centre back and thrived in the position taking on the new responsibility and any opposition coming his way. Injuries to others allowed Teddy to step out of goal and into the forward line where he blossomed and memorably scored on his birthday. Gala day was an uncanny metaphor for the season, as the boys won the first game comfortably, were robbed by a phantom penalty in the second and could not produce a final goal to progress in their third game. All in all, although results generally did not go our way during the season, it can still be considered a success as they developed a better style of play and importantly good fun was had by all. I’d like to thank Richard Lyon for managing the team this year and a big thanks to all the parents who kept supporting the boys. We ended up with a full squad of 16: 13 from year 11, including two who had never played in an organised team before (but had clearly developed good skills playing in B quad.) and three from year 12. And Mr Robinson agreed to coach the team on Tuesday afternoon in addition to his duties coaching the 18As. We started the season with a comfortable win against Lindfield, but against the better-organised teams, Wahroonga and Northside Monash, we struggled with our long-ball game and reliance on one or two individuals. However from about the middle of the season our passing game started to improve dramatically, to the extent that after our second-last match one of the fathers from the opposing team, having watched at close quarters as he ran the line, pronounced our team the best passers in the division and a group that used teamwork rather than individual brilliance (not that we didn’t have some brilliant individuals in the team). After that game we found ourselves lying second on the competition table, knowing that a win in our final game against top team Lindfield would see us win the division. Within seconds of the kickoff we conceded a ridiculously soft goal. We then controlled the play with slick passing and were more or less camped in the oppositions half, with Lindfield barely registering an attack until midway though the first half when they scored another lucky goal to leave us down two-nil. We continued to dominate possession and position, were awarded a penalty for handball, but somehow hit the upright. Finally some quick play from a throw-in on the right got the ball to AJ who worked his magic and conjured our first goal. After more domination, Brendan made some space and unleashed a thunderbolt which gave the keeper no chance. We went off at half time locked at two-all but with our confidence up, knowing that we were playing all over the opposition. In the second half our dominance wasn't quite so complete, but Lindfield's attacks were still limited to long balls and our passing and movement continued to be much superior. Nick made a run down the left touchline, beat their fullback and passed back to Brendan who appeared to line up a cross, only for it to curl beautifully into the top right corner. We were ahead, and with our defence demonstrating their worth as they had done all season, that's the way it stayed to the end — we were Division 3 winners. This really was a great performance by everyone, without exception. The commitment, passing and movement were the best all season and the result was well deserved. The boys really have been a pleasure to manage as I have seen them grow in maturity and confidence over the season as well as develop a fantastic team spirit. At the conclusion of 2009, after a runners-up finish in the Under 16 Division One competition, season 2010 in U18 was always going to be interesting. We were one of the favourites in Under 18 Division One competition and knew that we were in for a tough season. The 2010 side was predominantly last year’s U18A side with some new and returning players to the club in Richard, Bruce and James. We even managed to entice Justin McMahon (Year 12 2009) back for an encore performance. Fortunately, as many of them had already played in the school grade football team together, they fitted into the team comfortably. As it transpired – the very first match of the season would give a clear pointer to the final season outcome. Drawn to play Lindfield and still forming clear team combinations – we were desperately unlucky to lose 0-1 to a late and scrappy goal. It is fair to say that the sides competed hard and the match finale developed into somewhat of a fracas. Round 1 had already seen 1st versus 2nd as they finished the season in that order. The rest of the competition was no less combative, exhilarating and physically demanding. We scraped out some results and occasionally romped in others. On any given day, an upset was possible – even against Lindfield. Another 1-2 loss to Lindfield late in the season – this time after leading 1-0 deep into the second half ?!?!? The boys also represented Falcon in the KDSA Presidents Cup knock-out competition. Surprise! Surprise! The final was against Lindfield. In an absolute nail-biter we lead 1-0 early; had to fight tooth-and-nail to prevent an equaliser; to finally counter with a second goal. Final result a 2-0 win to Falcon and an impressive shield for the NSBHS foyer. Congrats to all the boys for continuing to show enthusiastic Falcon Spirit throughout the season. The pre-match chant has become legendary in the association as it begins to assume Hakaesque proportions. At such a high-level of football it is encouraging to see a bunch of mates pulling for each other and laughing about it later. A huge thanks has to go to Mark Robinson, our coach, and Pauline Huang, our manager. Of course the parents’ dedication to their sons and assistance with coping with the tense battles did not go unnoticed.
