Now Hear This is a fun-packed, fast-paced introduction to classical music
and the instruments of the orchestra for schoolchildren aged 8 to 12, with
the chance to join the world-famous Hallé in making a sensational sound.
Your guides to the music are conductor Jamie Phillips and presenter Tom Redmond. This year’s
sporting theme is inspired by the Football World Cup in Brazil and the Commonwealth Games in
Glasgow and features exciting, colourful pieces that capture the spirit of sporting ambition and
achievement.
As with all Now Hear This concerts, young musicians have the chance to come and play with the
Hallé, from those just beginning to learn a musical instrument to more advanced players.
Steve Pickett’s Dolly Mixtures and Tito Puente’s Ran Kan Kan include separate parts for players with
different levels of experience. Besides the beginners’ parts (Group A) there are parts for players
performing at Grade 2 – 4 standard (Group B) and for those at Grade 5 and above (Group C).
Together these offer clear progression routes whilst giving everyone a thrilling experience.
Steve has also arranged two songs by award-winning songwriter Lin Marsh – the hugely popular
Believe and her new piece Curse and Cast The Evil Eye. To assist with rehearsal in the classroom,
all the scores, parts and MP3 sound files for these, Ran Kan Kan and Dolly Mixtures can be
downloaded from www.trch.co.uk/nowhearthis from 24 February.
Last but not least, we’ll be taking everyone to Brazil with a huge Samba performance
that’s sure to get both students and teachers into a carnival mood with plenty of
audience participation.
The performance takes place at 2pm on Thursday 19 June and is open to all
primary schools from across the city and county.

What’s on offer…
1. Come to the concert
Tickets for the concert are just £3. Each participating school receives a
FREE Teacher’s Pack with learning resources and a CD so that you can get to
know the pieces before the concert.
Every school gets a chance to perform with the Hallé when we’ll all be singing
Lin Marsh’s Believe and Curse and Cast the Evil Eye. And there will be a mass
samba performance when everyone turns their body into a percussion instrument.
To book, fill in Form A on page 4.
2. Come and Play Performance
If your school is taking part in Whole Class Instrumental Tuition (WCIT) and/or you have young
musicians at grades 2-4 and grades 5 and above then your instrumentalists can join the Hallé in
the performance of Ran Kan Kan by Tito Puente and Dolly Mixtures by Steve Pickett. The parts
are divided as follows:
GROUP A: Whole Class Instrumental Tuition students and those learning an instrument for the first time.
GROUP B: Students who have achieved grade 2 – 4 standard on their instrument.*
GROUP C: Students who have achieved grade 5 or above on their instrument.*
* They needn’t have taken an exam – they just need to be performing at that standard.
NB: Your students must learn the pieces in the period up to 19 June 2013. It is essential that your
instrumental tutors devote sufficient time to coaching each group.
To book, fill in Form B on page 5.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are bringing both performers and non-performers to the
concert then you must use separate forms (A and B) to book their tickets.
3. Teachers’ CPD Sessions
We’re running 2 of our popular pre-concert CPD sessions with the Hallé Education Director,
Steve Pickett – great ways to get ideas for using music in the classroom, including warm ups,
icebreakers and lesson plans.
See page 6 for details and how to book.
4. Adopt a Hallé Player
Schools in the city and county can get to know the Hallé better by adopting one of its players.
Adopted players will visit your school, lead some creative music work based on the concert and
meet your school party at the concert.
There are 20 adopt a player places available – 10 in the city and 10 in the county. These are FREE but
will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Please make sure that you tick the box at the
bottom of your booking form to apply.
