The recipients are recognized for their outstanding achievement as a scholar. The purpose of this program is to establish a national network of universities with interests in aeronautics, space, and related fields; to encourage cooperation among universities, aerospace industry, and government; to encourage interdisciplinary training, research, and public service programs related to aerospace; to recruit and train professionals for careers in aerospace science; and to promote a strong science, mathematics, engineering, and technology educational base from elementary through university levels. This designation is in line with NASA’s goals to promote opportunities for, and participation by, our nation’s Native Americans in careers within, aerospace science, aeronautics, space, and related fields. VT GOVERNOR’S OFFICE Governor Peter Shumlin BTC- AVIATION TECHNOLOGY AWARDS VSGC designates three scholarship awards annually to candidates in the Burlington Technical Center’s Aviation Technology (Post-Secondary) School at the Burlington International Airport. The recipients of these awards are selected by the Director of the program and are recognized as the top students in Airframe, Powerplant and Avionics. SKILLS USA Contestants perform 12 tasks that represent the types of maintenance they will handle in the aircraft industry. The contest scope is consistent with the airframe and power plant mechanics certification guide published by the Federal Aviation Administration. Aviation maintenance is the only maintenance profession certified by the federal government. 2014 NORTHEAST REGIONAL SPACE GRANT TEACHER PROFESSIONAL WORKSHOP FOCUS (Facilitating Ongoing Content Understanding in STEM) a three-day professional development academy for middle school teachers of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) facilitated by the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) in partnership with the University of Hartford and CT NASA Space Grant Consortium. The academy reframes the teaching of concepts through engaging, authentic STEM contexts that are emerging 21st century fields critical to the highly skilled workforce pipeline of the future. Participants in the 2014 FOCUS academy increased their capacity to educate students about standards-based science concepts by engaging in engineering design activities using a process based on the National Research Council’s Framework for the Next Generation Science Standards.
