Assignment: Review figures from 6 papers related from your topic of research in terms of the following.
1) types and appropriateness of figures / graphs used for representation of data 2) title of the figure /
graph 3) legends of the figure - contents 4) Graphs - how are the graphs made. and make a set of
guidelines for making the figures a) for a research paper b) for a powerpoint presentation Good luck.
Figure 1:
Type of figure: Line Diagram depicting the difference in mean communication performance scores and
global rating scores
Title of the figure: Title of the figure is clearly written.
Legends of the figure: Legends of the figure are given, which identify the control and experimental
group.
How is the figure made: Figure is drawn by plotting the mean scores on Y axes and performance on X
axes.
Figure 2:
Type of figure: Bar Diagram
Title of the figure: Title of the diagram is clearly written
Legends of the figure: Legends are present to identify the pretest and post test.
How is the figure made: Bar diagram is drawn by taking Knowledge on X axis and its percentage scores
on Y axes.
Figure 3:
Type of figure: Bar Diagram
Title of the figure: Figure title is written clearly below the figure.
Legends of the figure: Legends clearly show the pretest and post test scores.
How is the figure made: Figure is drawn by taking level of knowledge on X axes and its percentage score
on Y axes.
Figure 4:
Type of figure: Pie Diagram
Title of the figure: Title of the figure is given above the figure and interpretation is given below the
figure.
Legends of the figure: Legends show the level of knowledge (Poor, Average) among women regarding
breast cancer.
How is the figure made: Figure is made in a 360 degree area, the proportion of area showing each
element is drawn and coloured.
Figure 5:
Type of figure: Bar Chart
Title of the figure: Table title is present above the figure.
Legends of the figure: Legends are clearly shown, which shoe the clinical nursing care, communication
and nursing health education.
How is the figure made: The X axes is not labelled, scales are not present in X axes.
Figure 6:
Type of figure: Bar diagram
Title of the figure: Figure heading is given on the top of the figure.
Legends of the figure: Legends show education levels.
How is the figure made: Y axes is not displayed in the figure.
Guidelines for making figure – research paper.
Title of the figure should be clearly written preferably below the figure.
Every figure should be self explanatory and should have legends to specify the details.
Figures should not be too large or too small; they should be of optimum size.
The fonts should be in the same font, which is clearly readable. Preferably times new roman.
The scales in the figures should be at equidistant and appropriate.
Different colour should be given to different elements of the figure.
Fluorescent type colours should not be used for the figure.
Guidelines for making figure – power point presentation.
The figure colour should be carefully chosen, so as to make it clearly visible from its background.
The fonts within the figure should be of darker colour on lighter background or lighter colour on darker
background, so that they are clearly read.
The figure size should be adjusted by uniformly dragging on both sides.
