2017 Spring Football packet

Watauga High Football
“F.A.M.I.L.Y 2017”
Watauga High Football Important Dates
1. NCHSAA Spring Football starts Monday, May 11. Practice will be from 4:00-6:00
pm. Spring football practice is from May 11-May 26. Only current 9th, 10th, and 11th
graders are eligible to participate. (Very Important!!!!!!!!!!)
2. Summer Football/weight workouts begin Monday, June 12. Workouts will be
from 8:00 am to 10:30 am on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
Athletes must have a current physical to be able to work out. Family vacations are very
important! Take them and enjoy them. Otherwise, potential WHS football players should be present at
the summer football/weight training workouts because they are vital to a potential football player’s
personal conditioning level, injury prevention, and our team’s success. Working out at YMCA’s, home
gyms, and health clubs are not the same. We are scheduling these in the morning for convenience with
most kids’ work schedules. Summer workouts are crucial for the building of the 2017 season. Working
out and training together as a team builds unity within the team. Summer football workouts will include
weight lifting, agility, flexibility, speed, and conditioning drills. Attendance will be taken each day to
reward players who attend. The goal is to make the “Pioneer Club” 16 or more total workouts.



All athletes must have current physical turned in to school and be academically eligible to be able to work out. Physical Forms are
located on the Athletic web page. Physicals should be completed and turned into Coach Habich. (Incoming 9th graders must bring a
copy and give to Coach Habich.
Players are strongly encouraged to attend workouts if they are in town. Workouts will count towards conditioning requirements
when practice starts. (reward system)
Official Football practice/tryouts start Monday, July 31 @ 9 am. Practice is mandatory after this date!
2. Tuesday July 26- Thursday 28 Football Mini Camp



Attendance is strongly encouraged for minicamp (9-12 graders). However, attendance is not mandatory
until July 31.
Offense/Defense schemes will be installed during minicamp
Equipment will also be issued for the official start date of Football Tryouts. (Aug 1, 9 am)
3. Monday July 31 9 am-12 pm. First Day of official football practice/tryouts
(Field house opens at 7:45 am)
Attendance is mandatory starting July 31 in order to play in the first game scrimmage. (NCHSAA Rule)
Practice times for the first five days of practice will be 9:00 am-12:00 pm. After day five, practice times might
change (see calendar). We will practice on Saturdays leading up to the first game.
*******Conditioning Test. All prospects will be expected to pass a conditioning test. . If anyone does not make the required 300 shuttle
times and complete the conditioning routine, they will not be allowed to participate in games until the time is made or extra conditioning
is completed. All athletes will also be required to complete 11 conditioning workouts before competing in a game. Workouts can be
achieved in the summer by making 11 or more workouts. (Blue Club or higher). Example: If an athlete makes 9 summer workouts (White
Club), they would only have to make up 2 conditioning days when official practice/tryouts start. (This is a safety issue to make sure
players are properly conditioned before playing in a game) It can be extremely hot playing off the mountain in August!



Practice is mandatory starting July 31 for anyone interested in playing football in 2017
Players must attend every practice to be eligible for first scrimmage (NHSAA rule)
AAU tournaments, vacations, etc… are not excuses to miss practice after July 31. Vacations should be before July 31
for all players interested in tryout out for the 2017 WHS football team
Watauga High School Football 2017
“F.A.M.I.L.Y”
Dear potential football prospects and parents:
Welcome to Watauga High School Football 2017. We are really excited about the start of a new
football season. The success of the 2017 football season will require hard work, dedication,
determination, teamwork, and the unselfishness of our players and coaches. Every season brings
new challenges and situations we will have to face together as a TEAM. We must be able to set high
goals, but also put in the work to achieve the goals we have for our 2017 team. We must be prepared
for the challenges that the 2017 season will bring. Our team must put in the time and effort to meet
these challenges….and we will. Our 2017 schedule will be one of the toughest schedules we have
played in a long time. The new 2017 Northwestern Conference will be a very tough football conference.
Our goal is to work together for a successful football season and challenge for the conference
championship (Process Goals). I hope everyone will set high goals for the 2017 season, but also be
willing to put in the time and effort to achieve our goals. I look forward to the 2017 season, and I hope
each player is excited about working hard together to achieve success as a TEAM.
