Iowa City Masonic Temple Association – Annual Meeting
it is time for the annual meeting of the Iowa City Masonic Temple
Association, December 4th at 7:30 p.m. Reports on the year's activities,
committees and plans for the future will be shared. The new Board
members will then be elected, before the meeting is turned over to
the Foundation for its annual business meeting and election. Following
the meeting we will have a social time with lots of holiday treats to
share! Remember that anyone who is a member in good standing of
one of the organizations that share ownership of the building has a
voice and vote at the Association meeting. We have struggled in the
past few years to reach the necessary quorum and we really need to
have everyone there to participate. Please mark this annual event on
your calendars. Tuesday, December 4, 2012; see you there!

Calendar Meeting – reserve the building
This year’s calendar meeting will be held on December 4th at 6:00p.m.,
prior to the annual meeting of the Iowa City Masonic Temple
Association. The purpose of the Calendar Meeting is where each
organization may request dates to reserve the building for the
upcoming year. This directly affects all the incoming heads of the
various organizations, and you are encouraged to attend and reserve
the building for the various activities you have planned for the
upcoming 2013 year.

Iowa City Lodge No. 4
Happy Holidays Brothers! Another year is winding down for our lodge, and I want to
thank and congratulate all of the officers for 2012. There have been some high points
and some low points for the lodge this year. Of course the lowest point has to have been
the passing of Maynard Smith. He was a good man, a good friend and a Mason's Mason
and we will all miss him.
The new officers were elected at the November meeting. They are: Alexander P.
Reavis - Master elect, David L. Davis - Senior Warden elect, Mahir Trnjanin - Junior Warden elect,
Paul E. Anderson – Treasure,r and Kevin R. Smith - Secretary. Congratulations to the new leadership
team! I am sure Brother Alex has a full calendar in mind.
The lodge has more degrees coming up and we would appreciate your attendance at the
degrees. The more Brothers there to greet the new candidate, in any of the degrees, make for a
more impressive ceremony and a better welcome to our lodge.
Keep Saturday, December 8 open on your calendars. We are going to have a holiday get
together in the Amanas. Time and place to be determined, so watch for the information on the
Yahoo Group. It will be "dutch treat" and families are invited to attend. We ask that you bring a new
toy with you and then the lodge will donate all of them to charity in time for Christmas.
Don't forget the Annual Temple Association meeting on Tuesday, December 4th at 7:30 PM.
Finally, may you and your family have the Merriest Christmas and a very Happy New Year!
—Kevin R. Smith, Secretary
Iowa City York Rite
Companions and Sir Knights, first, I want to say good bye to our Companion Maynard Smith.
Maynard passed away on Sunday, November 11, 2012. While he was not a member of the Iowa City
York Rite bodies, he was a frequent visitor. He was always ready and willing to help us out for degree
work, or projects. A small measure of how much he meant to Masonry in Iowa was demonstrated by
the large number of Brothers and Companions who attended his Masonic Funeral Service. Maynard,
we will sorely miss your good common sense, your witty comebacks and that big grin!
I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving! Our December meeting will be on Tuesday,
December 11th at 7:30p.m. It will be time for the annual election of officers for the upcoming year.
We would dearly love to see some of our newer members in attendance, and taking on some
leadership in York Rite. Fair warning! If you don't attend and defend yourself, you could find yourself
elected to a top office! :-)
Please remember that the annual Temple Association meeting is on Tuesday, December 4th. The
calendar meeting will begin at 6:00p.m. for those who may want to reserve the building in 2013; and
the Association meeting will begin at 7:30p.m. We tend to struggle
with having a quorum, so please plan on attending if you are available.
Happy Holidays! —Kevin R. Smith, High Priest

In Memoriam --Maynard J. Smith, 03/13/40 – 11/11/12
Maynard was born in Lone Tree, and
graduated from West Liberty High. He was
married to Waucile Maas from 1961 until her
death in 1998. Together, they had 3 children, five
grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He
was a member and Past Master of the Mt.
Calvary Lodge #95 of West Liberty, and served as
secretary since 1973. He was a member of the
Iowa City Lodge #4, and Past Patron of the Lotus
Chapter O.E.S. in West Liberty.
Brother Maynard served on the West Liberty
Volunteer Fire Department for 37 years, was a
member of the First Church United (West Liberty),
and more recently First United Methodist Church
(Iowa City).
He held several offices in Lotus Chapter,
including that of Worthy Patron. When Lotus
Chapter consolidated with Jessamine Chapter,
Brother Maynard continued to take an active
interest in Eastern Star and not only served as
Marshal, but was always willing to pro-tem
various other stations as needed. Brother
Maynard’s wit and wisdom made him an iconic
figure at Masonic functions, and he will always
be remembered as a born story-teller who gave
wonderful and meaningful recitations. We
rejoiced with Brother Maynard on April 8, 2006,
when he and Sister Patricia Zioberek were united
in marriage and a huge crowd gathered at the
Iowa City Masonic Temple to celebrate with
them at their reception…and we grieved with
Brother Maynard when Sister Pat left this life far
too soon. He also left two step-daughters/their
spouses, and five step-grandchildren.
Our sympathies to all his family. Brother
Maynard was called to his Eternal Reward, and
we trust that he is now with those dear ones who
have gone before him to be with Our Lord.
