CUTTERS COMMUNITY SOCCER Practice Plan 4: Passing, Receiving & Moving (Possession) Coaching Points 7:15 - 7:30 p.m. 1. Warm Up: move after your pass don’t hide behind the defender get in a position to receive the ball & stay on your toes cushion ball when receiving The age group coordinator will run the warm up. All players will be in pairs. The age group coordinator will choose a few pairs to hold a scrimmage vest between them. The rest of the pairs will each have a ball. Emphasize: Pass & Move Communicate on offense and on defense The partners with a ball will be passing around the field while the ones holding a scrimmage vest will be "cooperating" to take it away When a defender wins the ball, they drop the scrimmage vest and now pass, while the other pair must now defend. 7:30-7:45 p.m. 2. 3v1/6v3 Setup field like the diagram Play 3v1 in the middle square Only the one red star plays defense in the square. If the 1 defender wins the ball or knocks it out to the 5 red star teammates - the 6 now possess the ball and the 3 come out to defend. If the 3 win the ball or it is knocked out of bounds they play it back into the middle and play 3v1 again If you have more than 9 players, use them in the outside square. Rotate players between different roles. Play between the penalty box and midfield in a 20 x 25 yd space Use cones to create a 7 x 7 square in middle Coaching Points Coach only the offense as this is a possession night offense o move the ball quickly o spread out quickly o make yourself available to your teammate who has the ball o move your body to receive a pass and see the whole field o first touch sets up the next pass ** If it is too hard for the defenders to win the ball, make the outer field smaller. ** 7:45-7:55 p.m. 3. Team in the Middle Play across the width of half of the field. Divide this into three zones (see diagram). Create three teams of 4-6 players each. The game starts with a team in each zone. The two end teams play keepaway from the team in the middle. Players are not allowed to leave their zone. To get a point, one end team must make a successful pass through the middle zone to the team in the other end zone. (passing team gets the point) If the pass is intercepted or goes out of bounds, the passing team switches into the middle and the middle team goes to the vacated end zone. Object: to encourage players to maintain possession and to help them identify when to play a forward or penetrating pass. Coaching points: Movement is important! Encourage the team in possession to pass the ball around until a clear path is created to the other end. The receiving team should be on the move and should communicate to the passing team as well. Variation: Permit one player from the middle zone team to enter the end zone to defend/put pressure on the ball. If that player wins the ball, his/her team switches out of the middle. 7:55-8:15 p.m. 4. All up and All Back Scrimmage Divide group into evenly matched teams on a full field. Emphasis on moving together – we all attack and we all defend! To get your team to move together, impose the condition that a goal only counts if all players from the attacking team are in that half of the field. Reinforce lessons from training during the scrimmage. Use this time to ask trainers questions about game tactics, if needed. If a defender is on the opposite side of the field when the attacking team scores (using condition above), the goal is worth two points. Homework: Wall Ball: Kick a ball against an outside wall or with a friend, sibling or teammate. Practice receiving balls that bounce or are in the air.
