why do you use games in class time?

DO YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE WITH THESE STATEMENTS?
WHY OR WHY NOT?
1. The difficulty of a text depends mostly on the vocabulary
it contains.
2. Teacher should teach vocabulary in the same way.
3. It is possible to learn a language as well as enjoy oneself
at the same time.
4. There aren’t any benefits of using games in the classroom.
I. INTRODUCTION:
Language learning is a hard task which can sometimes be frustrating,
especially in learning vocabulary. Expanding our students' vocabulary
can help expand their knowledge. Having a poor vocabulary makes
reading more difficult and less enjoyable. Students who struggle to read
often struggle to learn. However, memorizing vocabulary can be a boring
and repetitive task.
There is a common perception that all learning should be serious and
solemn in nature, and that if one is having fun and there is hilarity and
laughter, then it is not really learning.
This is a misconception.
It is possible to learn a language as well as enjoy oneself at the same
time. One of the best ways of doing this is through games.

WHAT ARE GENERAL
BENEFITS OF

of the language class.

learning.

speaking, writing, listening and reading.

and increase cooperation.

7. Games promote healthy competition.
8. Games are fun.

III. WHY TO USE GAMES IN CLASS TIME?
1. Games are fun and children like to play them. Through
games children experiment, discover, and interact with
their environment.
2. Games add variation to a lesson and increase
motivation by providing a plausible incentive to use the
target language.
3. Game context makes the foreign language immediately
useful to the children. It brings the target language to life.
4. Games make the reasons for speaking plausible even
to reluctant children.
5. Through playing games, students can use English
without being aware that they are studying; thus without
stress, they can learn a lot.
6. Even shy students can participate positively.

Vocabulary games are often
used as short warm-up activities

on the use of language rather than on the

learn, practice, or review specific language
material.

* Discussion:
ARE THERE ANY
DISADVANTAGES OF
USING GAMES IN
CLASS TIME?
WHAT ARE THEY?
VII. DISADVANTAGES OF USING
GAMES IN CLASS TIME:
1. SUBJECT MATTER:
Students may want to play games in
class, not because the games are
making learning fun, but because they
are an alternative to learning. Students
may not learn that video games are
used to teach because they are too
focused on successfully completing the
game or even try to find ways to cheat
so that they don't have to learn to win.
2. COMPETITIVENESS:
Students who have been
focused on opposing each
other to win prizes or the
right to say they are winners
might forget how to be
supportive of each other
outside of lesson plans that
include games. Sometimes
games can lead to low selfesteem and aggressive
behavior.
3. COST:
Whether you're thinking about using
video games or board games in the
classroom, the cost can be quite high.
Video games come with obvious high
price tags, such as the cost of the
software itself as well as a console or
computer on which to play it. Board
games can also be costly if you get
enough for each student.
4. PLANNING AND
ORGANIZATION
TIME:
Not all games will
work for all
pedagogical
purposes. Choosing
or designing the right
game for the lesson
you want to teach can
be more timeconsuming than
planning a traditional
vocabulary lesson.
5. NOISE:
When playing games , now
and then students make a
very loud noticeable sound.
Then it’s annoying sound to
the next – door classes.
VII. CONCLUSION:
Learning and reviewing vocabulary through games is one of
effective and interesting ways that can be applied in any
classrooms.
Fun revision with vocabulary games should be an important part
of most lessons. A key to learning any language is growing one's
vocabulary. And the key to learning vocabulary is revision,
revision, and revision. Memorising new vocabulary words can be
boring for many students, but learning them through word games
can make the task fun for both students and teachers.
However, games are used not only for mere fun, but more
importantly, for the useful practice and review of language
lessons, thus leading toward the goal of improving learners'
communicative competence.
So, when considering language games as part of a lesson plan,
teachers should be aware of a few potential pitfalls.
