I hope everyone is having a relaxing and
enjoyable summer. Delta Omega continues to
remain very active throughout the summer
months. Our June meeting was a transition
meeting with the installation of our new officers
and recognition of milestone members. The new
officers and committee volunteers are as follows:
President Elect, Aris Eliades; 2nd VP, Lori Kidd;
Treasurer, Laurel Celik; Governance Chair,
Marilyn Perkowski; and Leadership Succession
committee members Diane Lorenzen and Anthony
Suncire. Thank you to our new officers and thank
you to everyone who voted! Our new Delta
Omega Intern will be senior nursing student
Ashley Capestrain. We rely on our Intern to help
keep us up-to-date on Facebook and put together
our newsletter. Rachel Patterson has done an
amazing job and we look forward to working with
Ashley in the upcoming academic year!

will be providing another hot lunch for OPEN-M in
September. Watch your email for details. We
appreciate all the volunteers who help to make this a
success! Our spring research program was a huge
success! We funded three research projects, and
awarded three book scholarships at $300 each. This is

that will be discussed in more detail in this newsletter.
supported this informative, fun-filled day. The
students provided health information regarding
summer safety, healthy eating with fresh fruits
and vegetables, and exercise safety. With the
funds provided by Delta Omega the participants
were able to learn in a very interactive way.
Information for summer safety was provided

Our Delta Omega Board meets the 4th Monday of
every month at 5:00 pm at The University of Akron in
room 101F. We do not have a monthly meeting in
July or December, but we welcome members to
attend the monthly meetings to hear more about our
activities. Participation of the chapter members is

participants were able to make cookbooks with
simple recipes using fresh fruits and vegetables.
On Thursday, June 16th, 2016, Sigma Theta Tau,

In addition, the participants
were able to engage in a
scavenger hunt consisting of
trivia clues that led them to
healthy habit prizes such as
toothbrushes, toothpaste, sunblock, sunglasses, water
bottles, Chap Stick, and stress balls. It was a great
day for everyone- participants, staff, and nursing
students! Thank you Delta Omega for making this
day possible!

The National Safe Routes to School (SRTS)
program is changing the habits of an entire
generation of school children while improving the
health and environment of our communities
across the nation. This national conference was
held in Columbus, Ohio April 5-7, 2016. One of
the successes of SRTS is its appeal to many
different disciplines. The conference drew a
national audience of school leaders, local elected
officials, county, state and federal agency leaders,
professionals in planning, architecture,
transportation, public health, parks and
recreations, hospitals, nurses, advocates for equity
and environmental justice, walking and biking
advocates all committed to improving conditions
for children to walk and bike to school. The goal
of SRTS is to create safer, healthier and more
livable communities. The theme of this year’s
conference was: Intersections – Where
Transportation + Health Meet.
A team from Akron was part of a workshop titled:
Thinking Big! Activating SRTS in a Large School
District. We presented with other large school
districts across the country on the successes and
challenges we face with working and motivating
large urban school districts. Our team consisted
of an engineer from the City of Akron, a school
health RN from Akron Children’s Hospital,
Summit County Public Health and Safe Kids
Coalition. From the school health aspect, I
presented data collected on injuries on the way to
school, piloted a Walking School Bus, and hosted
Walk and Bike to School Days.
The conference focus was to connect the dots
between active transportation and health while

Tuesday, May 17, 2016
Delta Omega’s second Spring Research
conference, “Continuing the Journey for New
Knowledge, Innovations and Improvements” was
an outstanding success! The conference was
hosted by Sigma Theta Tau International Delta
Omega Chapter, Akron Children’s Hospital,
Akron General Medical Center, Summa Health
System, Pi Chi Chapter and The University of
Akron and was held at the Summa Akron City
campus Professional Center South on Tuesday,
May 17th from 5pm-8:30pm.
The conference consisted of poster presentations, oral
presentations, a keynote address and an excellent dinner.
The keynote address was given by Mary T. Quinn Griffin,
PhD. RN, FAAN, ANEF, professor in the Frances Payne
Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve
University. The topic of the keynote address was on
dissemination of research, evidence based practice and
quality improvements. Participants learned a tremendous
amount of practical information regarding poster
presentations, oral presentations and publication.
There were also three very engaging oral
presentations during the evening. The first oral
presenters were Lily Holderbaum, BSN, RN,
SANE-A and Jennifer Gonzales BSN RN SANEA from Akron General Medical Center, presenting
on “Nursing Knowledge for Identification and
Referral of Sexual Assault and Violence” , the
second oral presenters were Shauna Anderson
MSN, RN, NE-BC, Robin Brown BSN, RN, NEBC, CHEP and Keith Blough, BS, MBA from
Summa Akron City who presentation was titled

“I'm Ashley Capestrain and I'm from North
Canton, Ohio. This year I will be a senior in
the nursing program here at The University of
Akron. My career goal is to be a nurse
practitioner in the pediatric or neonatal
setting. I have had the opportunity to gain
much campus involvement and nursing related
experience. For example, I participated in
UA's emerging leaders program and also
worked for the office of new student
orientation for two years. I also served board
positions for UA's rotaract club and the AKRowdies. I currently serve as president of
UA's honors nursing group. I'm also a nursing
student technician at Summa Akron City

far include a medical mission trip I went on in
Ghana, Africa in 2014 with honors nursing
