MAY MADNESS
•May Madness will be held at the Sarah Heinz House on Saturday, May 7. 2011.
•Starting time will be at 9:00 am with the intent to be complete by noon.
•The upper age limit for a team member is 14 as of January 1, 2011.
•There is no lower age limit
•The number of teams will be limited to a maximum of 24.
• Registration will begin on Wednesday, March 2, 2011 and will end on Friday,
March 18 or until all slots are filled.
• Organizations may register more than one team, but the second and
subsequent teams will be put in a ‘hold’ file until it is determined whether
there is room for them.

•It will be up to each team to build their practice table to the specifications shown.

Beginning Configuration
• You will start with 15 white ping pong balls in
base
• Black ping pong balls (3) will be on the 1” pvc
pipe
• You may only load 2 ping pong balls on your
robot at a time
• All ping pong balls will have a colored dot
(different for each table) so that the referee
will be able score each team accurately
Other Set-up
• Balls that go into the end baskets may be retrieved by the
referee and rescored.
• Middle goal will have a bottom on it so the balls do not fall to
the floor
• Balls that go into the opponents table will be removed at their
request but will not be returned to their original team.
• Balls that end up on the floor will not be returned by the
referee
• Balls that end up on the team’s table may be removed at the
team’s request but will not be returned
Scoring
End Baskets
• 1 point for a white ball scored in the short
basket
• 2 points for a white ball scored in the tall
basket
• Double points for a ball shot from behind the
foul line
• Points double if it is a black ball (Yes, a black
ball shot from behind the foul line is 4X the
score)
Scoring
Common Basket
• All shots for the common basket must occur
from behind the foul line
• Shots from at or in front of the foul line will
not count and will be removed by the referee
• Retreived balls will not be returned to the
team
• 4 points for a white ball scored in the basket
• Points double if it is a black ball
Black Balls
To be scored, black balls must be removed from
their PVC stands by the robot.
No score will be given for black balls removed or
loaded by hand
White Balls
White balls may be loaded on the robot by hand
Logistics
3 Students will be at the board:
– 2 students will be able to touch the robot and will
be in control of running the robot
– 1 student will be given a judges sheet to keep
score with the judge
• This student will consult with the judge at the end of
the match

• Alice competition
– The title is “The Physics of Basketball”
– Be as creative, silly, informative as you wish
