who cares Quarterly newsletter for carers Issue 34 - September 2015 The Trust is going smoke free Derbyshire Healthcare is currently on a journey to become a smoke-free Trust, thus providing cleaner and healthier environments to everyone involved with the Trust. This means that, from 9 March 2016, all staff, service receivers and visitors will not be allowed to smoke anywhere on our sites - including wards, grounds, vehicles and during home visits. This is also likely to include the use of e-cigarettes. Smoking cessation support Our staff will receive training prior to the Trust becoming a smoke-free organisation so that they are fully equipped to provide people in our care with the best smoking cessation advice and a full package of support. Support services are available locally to help people who wish to reduce their smoking habits, quit permanently, or prepare to go smoke-free for a period of time. These services include: • Live Life Better Derbyshire - Tel: 0800 085 2299 • Live Well Derby - Tel: 01332 641254 Whilst we’re on this journey to become a smoke-free Trust, we would like to learn from others. Changes to the Carer’s Breaks Scheme in Derbyshire County Shaping the future of Carers’ Services in Derbyshire Derbyshire County Council is inviting people to come along to help shape the future of Carers Services in Derbyshire. The events will take place on: If you’re receiving a Carer’s Break Award or have had one in the past, you’ll need to know about changes which could affect you receiving a payment in the future. Carer’s Breaks Awards have been one-off payments of up to £250 funded by Derbyshire County Council and the Derbyshire CCGs, which can be used by carers to help them in their caring role. The introduction of the Care Act 2014 has led to many changes for carers, including changing the eligibility criteria for carer’s services. The criteria is set by the Government and can determine whether you get funded support from the council to help you as a carer or not. What happens next? If you have received a Carer’s Break Award you will shortly be receiving a letter from the county council explaining the eligibility criteria changes and how this may affect you receiving a payment in the future. Although everyone has a right to request a Carer’s Break Award, it will not be granted automatically and will be subject to an assessment or a review. Along with a letter from the county council, you will receive a factsheet explaining the criteria and reasons why the change is being brought in. For more information you can visit the county council’s website at www.derbyshire.gov.uk/carers If you have further questions, or have not received your letter you can contact Call Derbyshire on 01629 533190. Winter flu jabs Each year, the viruses that are most likely to cause flu are identified in advance and vaccines are made to match them as closely as possible. The vaccines are recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO). You are eligible to receive a free flu jab if you receive a carer’s allowance, or if you are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if you fall ill. Contact your GP for more information and to find out how to get your free flu jab. Changing places toilets Many disabled people cannot use standard accessible toilets as they need more space for mobility and assistance. This includes people with profound and multiple learning disabilities and their carers, as well as many other disabled people. On 24 September, there will be an opportunity to join an interactive tour of the centre where you can take part in activities like cake decorating, salsa dancing and clay working. There will also be a free selfservice buffet between 12-2pm. Changing places toilets are larger than standard accessible toilets and designed for dependent use, for example with a carer. They have lots of space and specialised equipment, including a height-adjustable changing bench and a hoist. They are also clean and provide a safe environment. The tours will run every 30 minutes from 11am until 2.30pm. Visit Derbyshire County Council’s website www.derbyshire.gov.uk - or contact Call Derbyshire on 01629 533190 for more information about these facilities.
