Bandura is BACK!!!!!
• Remember the Bobo
doll guy?
• Observational learning
• He also developed
social learning theory
So what is social learning theory…..
• Bandura + Skinner = SLT
• 4 Step Process
1. Attention
2. Retention
3. Reproduction
4. Motivation (Rewards or Punishments of the reproduced
behavior)

So prove it…….,
• Well we can always use
the Bandura and Ross
(1961) study we already
learned.
• 36 Boys and 36 Girls from
Stanford U Nursery school
(4.4 years old).
• How does this study
support SLA?
• What are its problems?

St. Helena Study
Charlton et al. (2000)
• Remote island is South
Atlantic
Aim: See if TV would make
kids more aggressive.
• In 1995 they showed
kids 3-8 TV in their
classrooms (control

London).

St. Helena Study
Charlton et al. (2000)
• Then they watched for
aggression.
• They also interviewed teachers
and parents.
Results:
• No increase in violence or
aggressive behavior over 5 years.
Discussion:
• The island community did not put
up with violence.
• They may have learned
aggressive behavior from TV, but
did not show it.
• No motivation (reinforcement) to
show what they learned.
