11. Interaction with the Media and General Public

All communications with the news media and the general public will normally be handled
by the Public and Employee Relations Group. If the emergency occurs outside normal
working hours the shift supervisor will inform the media that he/she “is not authorised to
issue statements and that a statement will be issued by the appropriate person in due
course”, In extreme circumstances where the supervisor has to make a statement he/she
will use the initial prepared statement in section available in the emergency plan.
l
Experience indicates that the media will respond to most emergency situations minutes after
the event occurs. Proper handling of the press when an emergency occurs can ensure that the
media reporting of an incident is factual.

All communications with the news media and the general public will normally be handled
by the Public and Employee Relations Group. If the emergency occurs outside normal
working hours the shift supervisor will inform the media that he/she “is not authorised to
issue statements and that a statement will be issued by the appropriate person in due
course”. In extreme circumstances where the supervisor has to make a statement he/she
will use the initial prepared statement in Appendix 3 or below.
