What are Notifications?
• Notifications are the way
Canvas lets you know what is
going on in your courses
• Canvas has set up
notifications as a set of
global preferences
• This means that the same
preferences are applied to all
your courses and you receive
the same notifications from
each one once you set up
those preferences

1. What delivery format is this
course in?
• Online classes may rely solely
or very heavily on Canvas so
Notifications might be the way
you find out important
information about the course
• Face to face classes may rely
less heavily on Canvas for
communicating need-to-know
information
2. What tools do your
instructors most often use in
Canvas?
• What sorts of activities and features
are your instructors using in your
courses?
• EXAMPLE: If your instructors aren’t
using Discussion Boards for the
courses you are enrolled in then
changing your notification
preferences to exclude discussion
board notifications might make
sense.
More Tips
• Check and update your notification preferences every semester to
reflect changes to the formats of your courses, your instructors’ uses
of Canvas, and any communication device or email/social media
account changes you might have.

CHANGING YOUR EMAIL
ADDRESS
New email for the JC?
 Change it in your Cubby
 Then it changes in your Profile and Notifications in Canvas.
This will also be the starred email address that you see in your Profile in
Canvas.
Want to know how to change your email, phone number, address, etc.
in your Cubby? Did you know you can set a preferred name to appear on
course rosters?

Account link
Edit Your Contact Information
Edit Your Mailing Address
Edit Your Preferred First Name
From the ‘Update Account’ Link, You Can…

Make Changes and Update Your Account
Be sure to click update
account when you are
done editing
Remember to keep your
information in the Portal and
Canvas up to date!
