The euro is still popular in times of crisis

Press Release : The euro is still popular in times of crisis
New CEPS study shows unwavering support for the common currency
A clear majority of the European and German population supports the euro even in times of
crisis. This is the main result of a new study by the Centre for European Policy Studies
(CEPS) prepared with the financial support of Stiftung Mercator, which will be released on
Monday, 19 December during a lunchtime meeting chaired by FT’s Wolfgang Munchau.
In particular, this new piece of research contradicts the conventional assumption of a
significant loss of confidence among the German population.
Relying on Eurobarometer data, a group of researchers led by CEPS Fellow Felix Roth, charts
public support for the common currency since 1999, showing that the original skepticism of
the German population has been overcome, and the majority support for the euro has not been
affected even by the current financial and debt crisis.
The study also dwells on the different parameters used by the Eurobarometer surveys
(support), and those carried out by the prestigious Allensbach Institute of Germany (which
refers rather to trust) to point out that the findings of the two institutions are not necessarily
conflicting.
Accordingly, the CEPS study argues in favour of a long term policy for the preservation of the
common currency.
