PLANNING CONTENT
A single flashcard can be separated into two sides: a question and an answer. Users of your compiled flashcard app
would initially see all of the content that appears for the question. The user would be able to reveal the answers
for himself when he is ready. This pattern is repeated for each flashcard.
Both the question and the answer of a flashcard can be further separated into three different types of content:



Text
Image (*.png only)
Sound (*.mp3 or *.wav only)
The question side will reveal its text and image as soon as the user navigates to that flashcard. If there is any sound
file defined for that flashcard’s question, it will automatically play once the flashcard is shown. The user will also
have the option of playing that sound for the question again.
The answer side of the flashcard does not initially show any of its content. The user will be presented with up to
three buttons; each button reveals specific answer content. The table below specifies the type of content that
each button specifies. If a type of content isn’t specified for an answer, then the button that reveals that content
simply doesn’t appear on the flashcard.
Reveals answer’s text
Reveals answer’s image
Plays answer’s audio (This also
appears on the question side if a
sound is specified for the
question)
It is also important to note that Flash Card Maker uses specific file types for its image and audio content. Flash
Card Maker currently supports PNG files for images, and MP3 and WAV for audio.
It is not necessary to include every type of content on both sides of the flashcards. It is possible to generate a
flashcard which simply displays some text for a question, and utilizes an image and audio for an answer. A
flashcard can use a sound file and text for a question, and then an image and text for an answer. In other words,
different pairings of content can be used for each flashcard.
Subject matter should be considered when deciding which content should be used for each flashcard. For example,
if the subject matter is foreign language, each flashcard’s question can be a word (textual content) expressed in
the user’s first language, and its answer can be expressed phonetically and grammatically in the foreign language
as aural and textual content respectively. If the subject matter is focused on music theory and training the user on
the sounds of specific notes, a question can play a musical note at a specific pitch as aural content, and use a
picture of the note displayed on a musical staff as visual content for the answer.

USING FLASH CARD MAKER PROGRAM
PROGRAM LAYOUT
The first text boxes specify custom header and trailer text. This is text that is shown before starting the first card in
the finished set and after the last card of the set. Custom trailer text is not currently being used, so it can be
ignored.
3
Below the header and trailer information are a collection of controls for describing a single card. The left half of
this collection is used specify content on the question side of the card, while the right half is used to specify answer
content. Details about each control can be found under Creating a Card (page 4).
CARD MANAGEMENT
Upon the program starting, Flash Card Maker begins with one empty card. New cards can be created using either
the “Create New Flashcard Before Current Card” or “Create New Flashcard After Current Card” buttons.
The card set can be navigated via the “Previous Card” or “Next Card” buttons. Clicking either button will fill the text
boxes and buttons with the appropriate resources of the card being navigated to. The numbers above the question
and answer text boxes indicate which card in the set is currently being edited.
Cards can also be deleted from the set by navigating to the unwanted card using the “Previous Card” and “Next
Card” buttons and clicking the “Delete Current Card” button.
CREATING A CARD
Although the examples being shown only includes examples from question side, everything described works exactly
the same for the answer side.
TEXTUAL CONTENT
4
This is the textual content that users of the finished flash card app will see. There are no restrictions on the format
of textual content. However, it would be preferred that text be short and concise to fit properly on screen when
the final flashcard app is completed.
VISUAL CONTENT
Clicking the “Search for picture file” button opens a file selector dialog that is used to specify a PNG for one side of
the card to use. After the picture file is selected, it can be viewed by clicking the “Preview picture file” button. If an
image is no longer desired, it can be removed by clicking the “Clear picture file” button.
AURAL CONTENT
Clicking the “Search for sound file” button opens a file selector dialog that is used to specify an MP3 or WAV for
one side of the card to use. If the sound is no longer desired, it can be removed by clicking the “Clear sound file”
button.
EXPORTING CARD SET
Current progress on a flash card set can be saved by using the “Export Flash Card Set” option found in the “File”
menu.
5
Selecting the “Export Flash Card Set” option will prompt for a folder to save all of the resources of the flash card
set into. It is recommended that an empty folder is selected, as several files will be stored inside the selected
folder by Flash Card Maker.
IMPORTING CARD SET
Importing a saved flash card set can be done through the “Import Flash Card Set” option in the “File” menu.
Importing a flash card set will also prompt for a folder to be selected. Select a folder which contains saved flash
card set data and click open. A folder of flash card set resources should contain a collection of images, sounds, an
XML file, and an FCM file.
