Funding
From 1 April 2013/14, there will be sufficient funding in local authorities'
public health ring fenced budget for full roll out of the NHS Health Check
programme, and to cover the cost of both the risk assessment and lifestyle
interventions e.g. weight management services, to support people to
manage and reduce their risk. Funding will also be included in the ring
fenced budgets to cover the addition of the new elements of on alcohol
consumption and (for 65-74 year olds only) dementia awareness raising.
Additional pressures on the NHS to cover the clinical follow up and
management elements of the programme e.g. additional testing, diagnosis
and ongoing treatment, have also been factored in the funding that will be
provided by the NHS Commissioning Board.
Good practice examples
•Liverpool PCT – have offered a check to 26% this year
•Islington PCT – achieving a 64% take up rate
•Birmingham – performing well and focusing on reducing
health inequalities
Evidence base (1)
•Existing evidence for the programme is robust
•Cochrane review
– rebuttal from Department and NHS Diabetes and
Kidney Disease
Evidence base (2)
•Two very substantial national evaluations underway
– 3-4 year projects looking at impact of programme
– will begin reporting next year
•NHS Health Check dataset
– will be collected from next year
– pilot data coming in
Comprehensive evaluation being progressed
Working with LAs and LGAs
•Working closely with LAs and LGA
•LGA here today and working in partnership with us
•PHE will work with LGA to identify any further support
needed
