Agility in tennis What is agility?

Agility is defined as the ability to change direction quickly at speed
with ease. An example of this would be when a tennis players has
to travel from one side of the court to the other after returning a
shot.
In this video you see the athlete moving in different types of
directions. By doing this exercise we will be able to see
on what movements the athletes agility is better and
worse.
Coaching points
1. The player should start and finish the exercise in the
same spot.
2. They should run backward diagonally
3. Then run forward straight away without stopping.
4. Side step back to the original position
5. Repeat in the other direction.
In tennis agility is one of the main skills that the tennis player need to have. If a
tennis player didn’t have good agility then they wouldn’t be able to travel
around the court effectively.
Because tennis is quite a high intensity and high speed sport it means that the
tennis players should be able to travel around the court with ease to return a
shot. But also if the tennis players agility wasn’t good then the likelihood of
them return the shot rapidly decreases.
For this progression we have done ski jumps. This
purpose of this exercise is quick jumps over the line while
staying on your toes. In this case the player will be
jumping over the green line.
Coaching points
1. When jumping stay on your toes and perform quick
jumps over the line.
2. When jumping try to keep your upper body still and
move from the hips.
3. Keep your head up.
This progression is a moving ski jump with backward runs
once the player had reached the line and then a forward
sprint to finish.

Keep your head up.
2. Moving ski jumps to the line.
3. Run backwards to the starting position.
4. Immediately sprint to the end of the court.
