of recruiting and serving retirees
Responses Organized by Topic
1. Busy
a. I retired from ASU to have more time for "Me". Don't or won't take time from
"Me" to join this organization. Simply do not have the time to join!!
b. I'm not ready to join--I'm busy with other interests.
c. I am unable to commit time or money at this time, however may at a future
date.
2. Still Working
a. While I retired in December 2011, I have been employed full-time with a firm
in Tempe and I am continuing with my research interest. When employed I
have very little personal time. When I retire completely, I will join ASURA.
Please contact with if you have further questions. Howard Nelson.
[email protected]. 480-213-2162 (mobile)
b. I returned to full-time employment with ASU the end of 2013. I think you
could send out monthly news to our e mails. You would keep the ASU
retirees in the loop and encourage them to join. The e mail would cost only
the set up time and energy. I also would like to know if you are still interested
in collecting & selling text books, etc.? If only the working faculty and all
depts. knew that you would collect the books and use a service to make $.
[email protected]
3. Nothing to Offer
a. I don't know anything about it.
b. My retirement is thru IAA/CREF and investments; my health care is Medicare.
No value added - but it is good that you work for those with other benefits.
c. I think ?? ?? are doing a great job and I can't see myself doing any better.
4. ASURA Issues
a. How do I join?
b. Perhaps assign a personal sponsor to check in with each retiree as in my
case, of about 3 years after retirement. Thank you!
c. I don't see retirees from Fac Man being a part of your Association.
d. I think you are doing a fine job of reaching out.
e. One of the problems is parking. If I come to campus it costs $2.00 an hour to
ark in visitor parking at Fulton or PS1. I would like to attend seminars and
lectures but parking is a definite problem. Let me know about meetings etc. I
will try to attend if possible. Richard Lemon.
5. Other
a. I disliked the planning meeting, not AU. I graduated from ASU twice and was
staff for 30 years. The planning meeting was poorly run and full of
misinformation. After a certain point I just tuned it all out. I was not impressed
by the fly-by, brief presentation from ASURA.

ASURA and why you are no longer a member
Open-Ended Response
Organized by Topic
1. Getting Old
a. We have moved back to Indiana October 2013. I am caring for my husband
who is very ill. I do not have any time to take part in any kind of programs
and of course since we have moved out of state. As a caretaker I am very
busy. Thank you. Geraldine Casteel
b. I've had 3 strokes and lost my license after the second... had to live in a
senior living home. I've been in Legacy Assisted Living center at 5625 E.
McKellips Rd in Mesa since last May. (was 1007 E Southern, Mesa) Dale
Griffin
c. I retired from ASU at age 65 in 1990! I live in the East Valley beyond Power
Road. Tempe is a ways away and my husband now has problems walking.
We keep busy closer to home, but do attend cultural events in the East
Valley. And by now many of the folks I knew at ASU have moved or died. I
don't see many when I come to your meetings of lately, usually we came to
the one bug session in February but lately did not do that either. Thank for
asking!
d. We are getting on in age, totally occupied with health issues and limited ability
to drive or otherwise travel the distance from NW Valley to campus. Sincerely,
Wm. C. (last name unsure of)
e. I moved to south Gilbert and don't drive that far. People I knew all dropped
out, died or moved away. ASU campus has become a zoo. Can't find my
way around. Parking is a puzzle. No longer interested. S. Anderson
f. I did enjoy the retires Assoc when I was able physically.
g. Walter Dollbaum is deceased and I don't need your services. Thank you Mrs.
Dollbaum. Every time I turn around someone wants money.
h. Joining was simply the next step after retirement for my colleague and best
friend and me in 1988. Eventually, however, she lost interest and I didn't feel
like attending the luncheons and presentations alone. Now I am 90 years old
and there are very few people left I used to know. I enjoyed being a member
very much. Sincerely, Gertrud B Schuback
i. My wife has health problems that cause me to stay home to help as a
caregiver.
j. I joined ASURA when retired in 1982. I am now 91 and can no longer
participate. Lois Whitehurst
k. ASURA is and was a fine organization but finally aging is a problem. I am 90
now and no longer drive. My hearing is diminished and I walk with a walker. I
read the Newsletter but bot the e mail. My wife would appreciate no e mail at
all since she doesn't have time to clear the constant stream of notices that fill
our pixels. It seems looking to younger retirees would be a better place to
recruit. Yours sincerely, Eugene Lombardi
l. I have a vision problem and am no longer driving.

from the luncheons besides the lack of transportation.
c. I would welcome lectures and programs of high scholarly quality. thank you
d. Do another South Mountain "ranger leader" hike, then all go to The Farm for
lunch
e. I do not have a burning interest in socializing with ASU retirees per se, but I
have a very great interest in learning about study opportunities, lectures,
exhibits, and concerts. Right now, that is being served by the Osher Lifelong
Learning Institute, which I learned about through ASURA. This has been a
great opportunity.
f. I do not now have funds to travel with groups, but I might consider Elderhostel
in the future.
g. You might consider making retirees who have disabilities knowledgeable
about the Virginia Piper Sports & Fitness Center for persons with disabilities
at www.spofit.org. (Instead of joining the ASU fitness centers among all the
children.)
h. ASURA has a nice inventory of activities, and I can be as active as I want to
be. I wonder what would happen if we had an informal gathering for coffee
and conversation on campus (Maricopa room or University club), say, every
Wednesday or once a month.
i. My problem is that I live in Tucson, and it is increasingly difficult for me to get
to Tempe or Phoenix for events such as lunches, seminars, local day trips,
etc. I have been on some excellent longer trips within and outside Arizona
(notably the 9-day? trip to the Copper Canyon in Mexico in 2011), and I
continue to be interested in the possibility of international trips.
j. Some information regarding Parkinson's would be appreciated.
k. The help with computer technology would be useful. Most useful of all would
be references to an organization or individuals who could set up and maintain

standard IT equipment such as desktops and printers which, unlike laptops,
cannot easily be carried into stores for service.
l. It's time to get fit both physically and mentally.
i.

that was one hour start to finish.
ii.
Get into the latest fun sport for seniors, pickleball.
iii.

iv.

v.

update on what's happening.
vi.
Invite philanthropists and venture capitalists that we can learn from.
(not the Madoff ilk but the Gates Family).
vii.
Generally, your programs are not as current and progressive as they
could be seeing that we're attached to one of the finest universities in
the country. Your travel plans are hardly of interest to many of us who
are not only travelers but citizens of the world.. We should be offering
educational trips to Cuba, Ethiopia, Costa Rica, or US cities of note to
visit museums in NYC, ILL, FLA, CA (LA & SFO) etc. etc. As you see, I
could go on and on.
m. It would be very nice if ASU would give retirees a break on the high price of
ASU football tickets.
i. My address is 3017 Zane Grey Terrace, Altadena, CA 91001.
n. I would like to suggest volunteer opportunities be offered on short term.
Perhaps, one day or a few days in a month, for a limited time. Long term is
difficult for me.
o. I look forward to receiving info through ASURA re retirement funding
advocacy and also living arrangements.
2. Communication
a. better contact /more aware of events / better communication
b. Use post office for Retirement Day sign-ups
c. I appreciate receiving information and being considered a valuable person t
the community, and participate when health allows. Thank you.
d. I have limited email access.
e. modern electronic methods don't work for me...Twitter, etc
f. I've only been a member since April 2013, and have really neglected using
the computer to look at the Prime Times at the beginning of my retirement.
g. I don't receive Prime Time in the mail.
h. More updates on outreach committees, e.g. quarterly. Publish in Prime
Times.
i. The cost of being an ASURA member is becoming pricey especially if one
feels obligated to support ASURA activities. Contributing time as a volunteer
also counts (skill sets are worth something). I would like more feedback on
how my money is working for ASURA. What am I getting for my money?
Most activities cost more money.

j.
I have no idea what effort ASURA is putting out to legislators. I hear more
from the ASU Alumni Assoc (life member) and the "devils advocates" entity -especially around budget time.
k. A newsletter mailed to my home is absolutely the best. Otherwise, e-mail me
about events. I don't think you have my e-mail address. Or phone me.
l. I look forward to receiving info through ASURA re retirement funding
advocacy and also living arrangements.
3. Insurance / Legislature
a. I am grateful for ASURA's vigilance concerning medical insurance and
legislative issues.
b. All legislative material related to retired ASU employees should continue, as
well as insurance and health information.
c. We need to ramp up our government interactions again. Get some younger
people doing it who will be more active and not consider it their personal
province.
d. I'm the widow of an employee who retired in 1981.My primary interest is
receiving membership relates to being a retirement benefit recipient with
compact interpretation on file should I need it or my family's reference when
I'm deceased---maybe soon).
4. Kudos
a. Keep up the good work
b. We really thank all those whose efforts make it work
c. Having made that somewhat blunt comment, I do feel the association can be
a vital force in helping retirees enjoy and keep motivated to be active in their
retirement years and hope your survey brings useful information to assist in
this effort. Keep up the good work and keep us members informed
d. I split time between phx and stl and am not active in asura......but I enjoy
being a member and hope to continue to participate in the future.......thank
you for all the information and effort for the membership
e. Great organization and the reason for not attending events etc. I did not (fully)
retire but changed careers and became a faculty member at my local
community college.
5. Money Issues
a. Scholarship program. $10,000 scholarship is a budget problem. Perhaps
offer a $5,000 scholarship instead.
b. I am not persuaded that such a large portion of our budget should go for a
scholarship for one student. I would urge ASURA to cap the scholarship to a
lower number and not be tied to the tuition level. It might even be better to
provide four or five smaller scholarships to help more students and to lower
the dollar commitment of the organization for scholarships.
c. The cost of being an ASURA member is becoming pricey especially if one
feels obligated to support ASURA activities. Contributing time as a volunteer
also counts (skill sets are worth something). I would like more feedback on
how my money is working for ASURA. What am I getting for my money?

6. Location: Distance & Transportation Issues
a. Would it be possible for you to compile lists of members according to their zip
codes (with phone numbers) and distribute a list to people who have the
same zip code (o nearby)? So, maybe some car pools could be organized to
allow members to attend ASURA events. I do not drive that far any longer but
would be happy to contribute financially o the trips to Tempe, Phoenix, etc.
Thanks you for considering this.
b. Location of events -- Tempe Campus is a central location, but parking is a
logistics problem even on weekends. In the survey I considered Tempe
campus to include the Community Services bldg.
c. Since I don't drive at night, any activity ending after dark is difficult for me.
Possibly encouraging carpooling among members living near each other who
are attending an event? (I'm not sure how you would accomplish this.) But
maybe to have something on a registration form to indicate willingness to
carpool? (Or a plea for a ride?) Since I live in N. Scottsdale, there are fewer
members living nearby; this would be much easier to accomplish in the
Tempe/Mesa/Chandler area I realize.
d. For the luncheons, would you consider some vegan alternatives (just plain
vegetables and or fruits, salads without any meat or cheese, etc.? I am a
strict vegan for ethical reasons and the lack of vegan meals keeps me away
from the luncheons besides the lack of transportation.
e. I have lived in Michigan since my retirement 17 years ago
f. I live closer to West campus than to Tempe campus; therefore, events on
West campus would be better for me.
g. My problem is that I live in Tucson, and it is increasingly difficult for me to get
to Tempe or Phoenix for events such as lunches, seminars, local day trips,
etc. I have been on some excellent longer trips within and outside Arizona
(notably the 9-day? trip to the Copper Canyon in Mexico in 2011), and I
continue to be interested in the possibility of international trips.
h. .I think offering ASURA events at off-campus sites, such as Friendship Village
where I live, is a good idea.
7. Non Attendance
a. Personal health issues are limiting all my activities. I regret I cannot maintain
an active role with ASURA. However,
b. I enjoyed the faculty wives' activities during my husband's employment years,
but contacts have faded with time, and I'm really not interested in traveling to
participate now.
c. I am not in ASURA so much for the social gatherings. I am a care giver and
do not have much time for that
d. I am usually too busy for the usual ASURA events, but I feel very connected
to the personnel and activities of the emeritus college.
e. I appreciate all the work you do but generally find most activities neither
appealing nor convenient to my retirement life style and other retirement
involvement. Best wishes!!!
f. I have a life outside of ASU!

8. Retirees Day
a. I was sorry to see the annual Retirees Luncheon cancelled because of lack of
interest/registration. i thought this year's program was better than before--at
least for my interests. Better luck next year on getting out the attendance.
b. I was very disappointed in the cancelling of Retiree's Day this year and yet
understand the reason why. I chose not to attend because I live 1-1/2 hours
away from the campus but rather the offerings were not of high interest to me
or my wife. It seemed like the program was designed by academicians for
academicians. I believe a varied content of presentations is vital to the
success of the event. Having made that somewhat blunt comment, I do feel
the association can be a vital force in helping retirees enjoy and keep
motivated to be active in their retirement years and hope your survey brings
useful information to assist in this effort. Keep up the good work and keep us
members informed.
c. I'm going to write to Barry about questions that I have about Retirees Day.
Carol
d. I think they are doing a great job. However, this years Retiree day sessions
were not of great interest to me. So I did not attend. Some sessions I have
enjoyed in the past: algea on East Campus; Islam presentation; to name a
few.
e. I no longer take part in Retirees Day. I participate in some of the other
activities. I think ASUA is the most important of the retiree's organizations
connected with the ASU Tempe campus. I think offering ASURA events at
off-campus sites, such as Friendship Village where I live, is a good idea.
f. Have attended retiree days in the past, but I was not interested in any of the
offerings this year.
9. Survey Issues
a. shorter surveys and more frequent survey input from members/non-members
b. This survey was MUCH tooooooooo LLLOOONNNNkGGG. And the
questions were too long. And There should have been infromation in several
places (at the ends of each "Section" how many more questions there were.
TOOOOOOOO long!!!!!!!
c. no blanks for demographic info: age 79, retirement date 1995, Zip 59715
d. The survey was extremely redundant and DULL and I'm afraid i just clicked

10. Miscellaneous
a. I am currently a "snowbird" but am a member of the ASURA Travel
Committee. My wife has recently died, so I am in the process of relocating
my "home" zip code from 55350 to 85209, where I own a condo. Thus, my
zip code of "principle residence" is somewhat misleading
b. I've only been a member since April 2013, and have really neglected using
the computer to look at the Prime Times at the beginning of my retirement.
c. I think that when one is attending their informational program that HR
presents, a representative could possible speak at this session to PROMOTE
ASURA to encourage prospective members; tus, the importance to them
35
Summary Tables & Comments for Member Survey
Some folks just feel they get burned at ASU, and simply don't see the bigger
picture that others have overcome their differences at ASU, and now its (sic)
just about capturing relationships and fun information.
d. ASURA spends much of its time, effort and funds supporting ASU in various
ways (scholarship, video history, family sponsorship, Retirees Day) yet I
wonder if ASU (administrators or others?) are aware of how much the
organization gives back. Perhaps they consider it trivial? The
disappearance of (monetary) support, added fees for MU space, says a lot
about how ASU views its retirees and the organization. The video history
project looks at the past. (Give a set to ASU Archives?) ASU looks to the
future. Do they care to learn anything from past experts or just make the
same mistakes over again !
