Esteemed Ladies and Gentlemen,
"Let me win! But if I cannot win, let me be brave
in the attempt!" The oath of Special Olympics is
our mission and our motivation.
Special Olympics Liechtenstein offers a yearround sports training and contests in currently
eight disciplines for people with intellectual
disabilities. The program helps female and male
athletes to develop physical fitness, experience
joy and talent and to share solidarity with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the
community.
The athletes are the most valued asset of Special Olympics – forty years ago Special Olympics International was founded for them. The Special Olympics idea works in their interest world wide having people in
180 countries obliging themselves to their integration and appreciation.
Thanks to the efforts of numerous volunteers, trainers, assistants and members oft he foundation
board it is possible to provide the athletes with a custom tailored promotion appropriate to their needs.
In Liechtenstein more than hundred female and male athletes share their courage, joy and skills. I invite
you to experience the spirit of Special Olympics.
As president it is a great desire of mine that Special Olympics Liechtenstein has a solid and financially
secure basis so that at long sight all athletes and their families have this chance of experiencing self-awareness, social recognition and solidarity.
With this in mind, I am looking forward to the future development of Special Olympics Liechtenstein.

Ideals of Special
Olympics worldwide
Special Olympics is an international sports program for people
with intellectual or multiple disabilities which provides for
training and events on a worldwide basis. Founded in the US in
1968 it is recognized by the International Olympic Committee
since 1992.
Special Olympics are programs for popular sports, which
further a general physical fitness and agility; they contribute
to the strengthening of self-confidence, pleasure out of movement and the athletic performance.
The social, emotional and mental balance should be
strengthened by the Special Olympics programs regarding
the individual but also within the family. The sportive activities
will be brought to the public by Special Olympics bringing
recognition to all participants.

Site of encounter
Far beyond the participants, Special Olympics also has direct
effects at the sites of the games. The sports-events are always
a platform for encounters.
Special Olympics brings together volunteers from local
schools, organizations and associations and helps thus to
achieve a sensitization for the issue "people
with disabilities". The contact between the

athletes and the local population allows

their sports under excellent
conditions.
Special Olympics World Games
Marco Büchel, former ski-racing professional
The world games are held every two years,
alternating between summer and winter games. World games,
but also small or medium sized national or international contests should always represent an integral experience for the
participants.
Therefore besides the sportive competition there is a
supporting program with an opening ceremony, formal recognition of the participants and a closing ceremony. Also social
activities like dances and game evenings are part of Special
Olympics sporting events. Events with a duration of at least
two days and an overnight stay allow all this and give the
opportunity to cultivate informal contacts.

Liechtenstein
Since the official foundation of Special Olympics Liechtenstein (abbrev. SOLie) in 2001 is Her Highness Princess Nora of
Liechtenstein ambassadress and advocate of the SOLie in
national and international circles.
Since beginning of 2010 Special Olympics Liechtenstein
acts as independent foundation. Under the leadership of H.H.
Princess Nora of Liechtenstein a dedicated Foundation Board
was formed with representatives of the economy (Adolf E. Real,
Urs Sprenger), the athletes (Johann Kirschbaumer), from sports
(Leo Kranz), a representative of the athletes’ family members
(Natalie Wohlwend) and an expert (Röbi Kubik-Risch).
An intellectual disability is no illness
An intellectual disability means a limitation in the cognitive
area. Cognitive abilities of a human being are for instance the
abilities to learn, to plan, to argue. Limitations in this field can
also mean that a person has difficulties to analyze a situation,
to generalize something or to be foresighted.
It influences the general development or the ability to
learn in different ways. People with an intellectual disability
have a slower development than others. There are genetically
caused, innate intellectual disabilities like the Down-Syndrom.
Metabolism disorders, complications during birth, lack of
oxygen or accidents can also be the cause for intellectual
disabilities.
Eight disciplines – one goal
Special Olympics Liechtenstein started in 1999 first with trainings in the disciplines swimming and cross-country skiing.
In the meantime more than hundred female and male
athletes take advantage of the weekly offers for training. The
minimum age is eight years. A large number of the athletes
take the opportunity to participate in national and international contests to compete with others. The disciplines are alpine
skiing, cross-country skiing, floor hockey, Boccia/Petanque,
swimming, cycling/biking, gymnastics and football. There is
also fitness-training for adults and polysports training for children. In training

By participating in national and internaDr. Klaus Tschütscher, Head of Government
tional events of Special Olympics a lot of
good is being done: The acceptance of people with intellectual
and multiple disabilities in the society is furthered, the social,
psychological and mental balance of the participants is improved and the joy in movement and sportive performance is
strengthened.
