PHILOSOPHY
I believe in offense…
But a good defense win tournaments
JOY and HARD WORK is the fundament for success
- Skills
- Tactics
- Offence & defence
I want my Team to play offensive and smart…
In 2006 the IIHF gave us ”an order” – let us stick to that.

DEFINE
OFFENSE / DEFENSE
Offense is when we have the puck
Defense is when we don’t have the puck..
Offense is when we have the puck
Defense is when we want the puck..

YOUR OFFENSE starts in your
defense...
You win games by scoring goals!?!
Your tactical system should be built with
an offensive base
The game should be played WITH the
puck
Offense makes the Team grow!
REMEMBER:
Ice Hockey is 50 % offense and 50 % defense.
It’s your responsibility as a Coach to teach both.

SUMMARY
Individual tactics from IIHF Education mtrl
Individual tactics of Players can be identified as either offensive or defensive.
Players must be able to select the appropriate tactics to counter any defensive
situation.
Any individual tactic performed by players must fit within the team system. This
will allow for more success individually and as a team.
With better execution of each individual skill there will be an overall
improvement in team performance. For this to happen players must be taught
proper technique, they must be given time to practice the skills and to understand
how these skills fit within the team system.
A number of the skills are specific to positions and should be stressed for
those playing a particular position.
For example, pinching by the defence should be practiced if you wish
this tactic to be part of your team system.
Read and react to situations as quickly as possible.

”Play book”
Fundamentals for building up the offense
Breakouts – basic philosofy:




Always start to attack from where we win the puck.
ALWAYS move with the puck.
”The first pass” is a key for our offense.
Be an option after you have delivered the pass – or ”secure” .
Game situations:
1) ”Quick ups”
2) ”Skate it up”
3) ”Reverse” (= D under pressure from behind) (See diagram 3)
4) The whole unit under pressure (See diagram 4)
5) Vs forechecking or ”dump” (See diagram 5)
6) ”Up – back & cross” (See diagram 6)
7) ”Controled breakouts” (See diagram 7)
Small unit actions (3 vs …. etc)
(See diagram 8)
Face Offs (Win and attack)
a) Defensive zone (See diagram)
b) Neutral zone (See diagram)
c) Offensive zone (See diagram)
Etc, etc….

Your defense will effect your offense

WE SHOULD ASK
OURSELVES
Do we need a system?
Who choose’s the system?
Why choose that system?
Balance offense/defense!?!
06/05/2011
Jim Brithén / 3rd Period 1(6)
”BALANCE”
Balance between offensive and defensive qualities
Example (off/def): 50/50, 40/60, 60/40, 90/10 etc, etc
• Individual Player
• Line
• Pair of D:s
• Block
• Team (50/50 = most succesful!??!)

”OFFENSE DEVELOPS AND IS THE
BEST DEFENSE” (What wins Championships??)
•There is a lot to learn
•A ”Philosophy of your
own” is a
good start
•Your solution can seem utopian
• ”Sail your own way”
Jim Brithén / 3rd Period 3(6)
06/05/2011
The Coach set the standards:
If you tell the team that it is ok to ”set up” and play ”The Trap”
– then
they will do it 8 times out of 10!
If you tell the team that it is ok to use organized break outs from behind
the net – then they will do it 8 times out of 10!
Offensive, positive Ice Hockey is the best method to
Develop the players and the Team.
Jim Brithén / 3rd Period 4(6)
06/05/2011
Remember:
The ”Team Play System” decides:
What kind of Ice Hockey do we want in the future?
What do we wish to see??
What can we do to make it happend?
Who decides the future for Ice Hockey?
Who is working with the Players and the Team
and shows the direction?

Final words – THANK YOU!
 ANALYZE RIGHT!
 MAKE IT SIMPLE!
 BE CRITICAL TOWARDS ”MADE UP” MODELS – USE KNOWLEDGE & FIND
YOUR OWN WAY!
 DEVELOP – DO NOT ALWAYS DO LIKE WE HAVE DONE BEFORE!
 YOU ARE THE FUTURE!
