Another nervous start to the game as the boys seem to be feeling the pressure. This lead to the Rossendale
midfield/attack to break through too many times and before 5 minutes of the game played, Rossendale found
the back of the net, 1-0 with a well struck shot that gave Ellis little chance. From the restart the boys again
were threatened a couple of times more until they finally got into their stride and began pass and work the
ball around the field. This good work inevitably lead to a strike on goal from Nick to level the score 1-1.
This spurred the lads on as if we’d thrown the remote control switch to play! More and more pressure was
applied to the crumbling Rossendale defences. Winning us a succession of corners, which were beautifully
delivered by Matty. One of the corners was poorly cleared by Rossendale and fell nicely for Nick to catch the
ball sweetly on the volley, giving the keeper no chance. Still the pressure rained down and another corner
cleverly taken short by Matt to Nick, caught Rossendale on the hop. Nick driving the ball low into the box,
found Connor and with his usual no nonsense style, changed to ball direction with acute side foot shot into
the back of the net. Further chances were created and try as they might the two Sams, couldn’t find the back
of the net. The post, cross bar, other players and the keeper kept them away from a much-deserved goal.
Further good work and a patient build up got the ball to Matty who skilfully wound his way round the
defence before drilling a left foot shot into the Rossendale net. Towards the end of the half saw the
appearance of Clayton, with Sam Carr making way for the change and although no further goals scored,
Clayton made an immediate impact by increasing the pressure on our opposition by some clever interchange
passing between him, Nick and Matty.
Half time and in a comfortable position, Sam Jackson made way for the introduction of Jordan. The second
half was peppered with a number of chances on the Rossendale goal, following more controlled ball play in
midfield. With the Chaddy Park defence pressing high up the field, the pressure was at time relentless and
Rossendale struggled at times to clear their lines. This pressure eventually paid off with another left foot shot
low and hard from Matt finding the net. Halfway through the half saw the return of Sam Carr who was then
closely followed by Sam Jackson. The ever-reliable goal threat that is Sam Carr, was on form again, being in
the right place at the right time bagged himself two goals. In the final moments of the match it was now all
one-way traffic, resulting in a run of consecutive corners and yet more direct pressure.
Eventually, Clayton broke through from midfield after good work from Jordan, Sam Jackson and Adam
providing a patient and controlled build up to the final telling pass to Clayton. Lined up just right to let loose
his shot Clayton found himself being tackled on the edge of the box by a Rossendale defender, trying
desperately to stop Clayton’s shot, did the job for him by driving the ball passed his own keeper for an
unfortunate own goal.
A quiet game for Ellis in nets who had little to do once the team was in full flow. Likewise a frustrating but
trouble free game from Adam who was always on hand to stub out any sign of threat from the opposition.
Final score Won 8 - 1
