St Edward’s Year 3/4 Miss Aylett’s Class Summer Term 2016-2017 Literacy Pupils will cover the following ‘writing’ units of work this term: Fiction Text: Iron Man by Ted Hughes Fiction Focus: Adventure stories. The children will explore and discuss key features of adventure stories. They will then write their own story based on this popular book. Fiction Text: Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura Fiction Focus: Stories with a historical setting. Using the above book, and their knowledge learnt through their topic work, the children will write a story set in the Stone Age. Non-Fiction Focus: Instruction texts focusing on How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth by Michelle Robinson. In this part of the unknit, children will develop on their understanding of instructions texts. They will know and understand the features and be able to include these in their own writing. Numeracy Key learning objectives: Number and Place Value Recall multiplication facts to 12x12. Count back through zero using negative numbers. Know the place value of each digit in and four-digit number. Find 1000 less than a number and 1000 more than a number. Put four digits in order using < and > symbols. Round numbers to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000. Know that numbers can be written as decimals or fractions. Solve problems with negative and large numbers. Solve problems using fractions and rounding. Calculations Add numbers with up to four digits using a written method. Subtract numbers with up to four digits using a written method. Make estimates and using inverse calculations to check answers. Mentally multiply and divide numbers. Recognise and use factor pairs in calculations. Multiply two and three-digit numbers by one-digit numbers without a calculator. Solve problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Fractions, Decimals and Percentages. Know that hundredths come from dividing 1 by 100 and dividing tenths by 10. Show equivalent fractions using diagrams. Add and subtract fractions. Solve problems using fractions. Recognise decimals and understand what they show. Write tenths and hundredths as decimals, and ¼, ½ and ¾ as decimals. Divide a one or two-digit number by 10 or 100. Round decimals with one decimal place to the nearest whole number. Compare numbers with the same number of decimal places. Measurement Convert between units and compare measurements. Work out the perimeters of shapes Find the area of shapes. Calculate using money in pounds and pence. Read and write time in the 12 and 24-hour clock and convert between digital and analogue. Solve problems by changing different units of time. Geometry Identify 2D shapes and they lines of symmetry. Identify acute and obtuse angles and order them. Use coordinates to describe a position on a grid. Describe translations Plot coordinates and draw sides to complete shapes. Statistics Interpret and present data using bar charts, time graphs and pictograms. Solve problems and make comparisons using data from bar charts and time graphs. Religion The children will concentrate on two units of work from the Come and See RE scheme. ENERGY This unit will focus on Pentecost. Christians believe that the gift of the Holy Spirit within them gives them energy and the power to live the way of Jesus. The symbols used for the Holy Spirit – wind and fire – are symbols of power and energy. At Pentecost, the disciples were filled by the gifts of the Holy Spirit and went out courageously to carry the Gospel of Jesus to the whole world. UNIVERSAL CHURCH – GOD’S PEOPLE This unit links into the work that CAFOD carry out “Communion of Saints” is the collective name given to all members of the Church community, whether living or dead. Some members of the Church family are named as martyrs or saints. Martyrs are people who have given their lives for their faith. Saints are people who have lived in God’s way. They show us what God is like – loving, faithful, forgiving, caring for others and God’s world. ICT The pupils will use Interactive Communication Technology to research the International Primary Curriculum Topics. They will use ICT to support their learning in Literacy & Numeracy. ICT Skills Pupils will learn how to use ICT responsibly and stay safe online how to find reliable information from a range of sources including the internet how to use ICT to present things we have found out in an exciting and engaging way how to write algorithms to make things happen in digital games How to debug scripts and programs in digital games. French In Year 3/4 the children will learn how to say their name and age in French and talk about their family members. They will also learn numbers and colours in French. The pupils will listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding. Explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words Engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others IPC Topic In this geography topic, the children will be able to: United Kingdom IPC Topic Stone Age to Iron Age name and locate counties and cities of the United Kingdom, geographical regions and their identifying human and physical characteristics, name key topographical features (including hills, mountains, coasts and rivers), understand how some of these aspects have changed over time use maps, atlases, globes and digital/computer mapping to locate countries and describe features studied use the eight points of a compass, four and six-figure grid references, symbols and key (including the use of Ordnance Survey maps) to build their knowledge of the United Kingdom and the wider world In History, we’ll be finding out: How fossils are made and what we can learn from them What our earliest ancestors might have looked like How our ancestors were able to survive How to use archaeological evidence to find out about a prehistoric hunter Where our ancestors settled and how they lived How we can learn about the past by investigating a Stone Age village What life was like during the Bronze Age and Iron Ages In Art, we’ll be finding out: How to create our own prehistoric cave paintings How to make and decorate pottery, based on one of the periods we have explored In Technology we’ll be finding out: About the types of foods that the first farmers would have grown How we can update the dishes that the early settlers may have eaten In International, we’ll be finding out: How we can work together to learn new skills and achieve our goal P.E./Games P.E. will be taught on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. A full P.E. kit will be needed for these lessons. Weekly home learning Reading Reading scheme books will be changed every Wednesday. Please ensure your child has their reading books and diaries with them every day. Spelling Children will be given a spelling rule to learn each week (please see spelling letter) and they will be tested on a Friday. Multiplication Tables Your child should know by heart all multiplication facts to 12x12 (and division facts). Encourage your child to develop fast recall of multiplication tables. Literacy & Numeracy & IPC Home Learning Routines Homework will be set every week. The types of homework that they will receive could be literacy, maths or topic based. Please encourage your child to complete their homework and bring it in on time. Diaries Homework Diaries should be in school every day so that any messages can be passed between home and school efficiently.
