PRESS RELEASE – FOR RELEASE ON OR AFTER MARCH 13, 2007 March 12, 2007 DFW SIM CHAPTER ANNOUNCES 2006 IT EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR AWARDS The IT Executive of the Year Award was initiated by the DFW SIM Chapter in 1998 to recognize excellence in IT management within the Dallas/Fort Worth area. During the first four years, recipients were recognized at a special ceremony and reception sponsored by American Show Management, Inc. at the Dallas Information Technology Exposition (ITEC) each June. In 2002, ownership of the award was assumed by the SIM Chapter and the awards ceremony was moved to coincide with the Annual DFW SIM Chapter’s Holiday Banquet in December. Initially only one winner per year was selected; however, starting in 2003, multiple awards were selected based upon the size of one’s IT organization. Maternowski, former Sr. Vice President & CIO, CitiFinancial Auto; and 2) In the Midsize Organization Category -- Alex Pettit, Chief Technology Officer, City of Denton TX. The First Runner ups for each category were: Caren Shiozaki, VP and CIO, Belo Corp and Steve Davis, CIO, SOURCECORP, Incorporated. The DFW Area SIM Chapter with nearly 200 members is regarded one the premiere SIM Chapters in the nation. SIM International has over thirty chapters and nearly 3,000 members and is viewed as one of the premiere professional association for IT executives. Membership is restricted to those, who are senior IT executives, CIOs, CTOs, senior IT consultants, prominent “thought leaders” in the IT profession, and prominent IS/IT academicians. While this year’s winners are all members of local SIM chapter, membership in SIM is not a requirement for this award. The SIM DFW Chapter IT EOY Award is one of the most prestigious awards for an IT Executive in the DFW Area. Individuals are selected by a panel of their peers based upon the following accomplishments: (1) Utilized IT to significantly improve their organization’s overall competitive advantage, efficiency, and operational effectiveness; and, (2) the recipient demonstrated outstanding leadership and management skills within the IT professional community (See History of the Award below). BIO’S of Winners As former CIO, Phil S. Maternowski, recipient of the 2006 IT EOY of Large Size Firms, was responsible for CitiFinancial Auto’s project to allow for the refinancing of automobile loans. This project allowed consumers to refinance at a lower interest rate, increasing Auto’s profitability and generating $600 million dollars of additional revenue in 2006 with projections of over $1 billion dollars in revenue in 2007. Also, under Mr. Maternowski’s leadership, Auto implemented IDS (Intelligent Document Services) during 2006. IDS allowed the business to utilize enhanced imaging and content management. The result of this new process was a quicker turn-around in handling of applications, reduction of overnight delivery charges and a streamlined process that ensured documents were safeguarded throughout their life cycle. As the Chief Technology Officer and member of the leadership team for the City of Denton, Alex Pettit provides technical direction to the various city departments, including public safety, utility services, and financial accounting. During his tenure with the City of Denton, Alex and his department have earned several awards and have been recognized by groups such as Government Technology and the Public Technology Institute for the innovative use of technology in government. For his leadership and service as CTO for the City of Denton, Alex received the Technology Leadership Award for 2004 from Public Technology Institute, a Best of Texas award for Demonstrated Leadership in Management of IT in 2005, and the 2004 Premier Award for the innovative use of technology for historical records preservation. Mr. Pettit’s vision and strategy of IT is embodied in the Denton’s “Future F.I.R.S.T.” slogan. The City uses technology to enhance its management strategy and attain the community’s vision by embracing change through: (1) Forward thinking, (2) Innovation, (3) Response to the needs of citizens, (4) Safety, and (5) Technological advancement. Several of Mr. Pettit’s recent innovative IT initiatives included: (1) LaserFiche Imaging Project for all area’s of City government; (2) The Kiosk Solution by which citizens of Denton can make credit card payments and departmental inquiries from a convenient location such as a shopping mall; (3) GIS Interactive Quick Maps which allows citizens the ability to locate residential addresses, City facilities, schools, parks, restaurant, fire stations, bus routes, intersections, amenities near residential addresses, view aerial photos, and locate Council and voting districts; (4) The Tele-Works Project provides citizens improved access to Municipal Court, Tax, Utility Customer Service, and Building Inspections, the City of Denton implemented e-Government services available through the use of a PC connected to the Internet or from a telephone; and (5) Webcasting of the City’s publicaccess channel, making the channel available to any PC for the public 24 hours a day 7 days a week. First Runner up Caren Shiozaki, VP/CIO at Belo Corp., was recognized for her creative approach to implementing high-definition (“HD”) technology allowing Belo’s key television stations to be the first in their markets to present a full HD news broadcast. Further, Belo was able to accomplish this at one third of the cost of traditional HD broadcasting approaches. In addition, Ms. Shiozaki aggressively deployed new interactive technology to allow users of Belo Web sites more immediate personalized and interactive news content online, while expanding users’ capabilities to access Belo sites from cell phones, PDAs and other wireless devices. These innovations contributed to an increase in Belo’s interactive revenues of nearly 50 percent in 2006. First Runner up Steve Davis, CIO, SOURCECORP, Incorporated, led a strategic effort to create a centralized, flexible core IT processing platform that has the competitive benefits of enabling intellectual capital leverage through standardization, the integration of emerging labor automation technologies, and a highly secure direct client interaction model for computing. The highly configurable and scalable platform has enabled SOURCECORP to sell its BPO services to a more sophisticated and demanding client base. As an example of one of these initiatives, Steve drove the initial pilot and subsequent rollout of high speed scanner systems into ten of SOURCECORP’s largest document scanning operations.
