Nonfiction
• Nonfiction works develop central ideas
through the use of supporting details.
• A central idea is the key point the author
wants to make.
Determining Central Ideas
• You find the CENTRAL IDEA by asking yourself:
• What does the author want me to believe or know?
• What key reasons does the author use to support their
idea?
• Central idea= Author’s purpose + topic + key reasons
