Women Mentoring Women
GOAL:
The WICT mentoring program is designed to help bring awareness and
development of professional and personal skills and talents. The
mentor helps the mentee reach their goals by defining areas of
development, planning next steps and providing resources and
opportunities.
PROCESS:
Help mentees to develop through coaching, setting personal
goals and providing feedback. Take the time to get to know
each other and build a relationship of trust. Discuss interests
and expectations. Decide a focus and realistic goals. Establish
a time frame; six – twelve months is ideal. Allow mistakes and
learning time. Complete various activities and/or a special
project so that it is a win/win situation for both involved.
Review progress periodically.
CIRCUMSTANCES/
ENVIRONMENT:
Set the conditions with each situation and
allow for differences. You may not be
physically located where you can meet in
person each time. There may be
situations where it may be impossible to
meet on a regular basis. Set a schedule
and try your best to stick to it. Make
mentoring a priority.

Mentor: Role and Responsibilities
Role
The role of the mentor is to support the mentee in his/her agenda and career goals. Work
together to determine an understanding of how you, the mentor, can provide support and
resources to get to their end goal.
Responsibilities
1) Discuss what mentoring is and the benefits
2) Explain why you mentor and what you get out of it (If you have never mentored before you
can talk about what you look forward to in this process and what you would like to get from it )
3) Ask the mentee what he/she would like to get out of the partnership
4) Get to know more about the mentee and what he/she wants to achieve
5) Ask the mentee what he/she would like to know about you and your background
6) Ask the mentee what he/she needs from you
Examples:
How do you see me as your mentor?
What kind of support do you want from me?
How do you like to be supported to accomplish goals? (e.g.: Forcefully pushed? Gently
encouraged? Challenged? Need a lot of acknowledgement for what is working or what you are
doing right in relationship to what you want?)
What are you looking for in a coach?
How can I best support you?
How do you want me to be when you have not completed something you agreed to complete?
7) Be prepared to share with the mentee what you need from him/her – what’s important to
you in your relationship as a mentor, and how you like to work as a mentor
8)Help to determine the logistics and structure you both want to use to support the
relationship
9) Agree upon how the partnership will work and how you can best support the mentee in
