School Continuous Improvement Plan – 2015 - 2018
School: Summitview
Success for All x All Kids Are Our Kids =
One Year’s Growth
Grande Yellowhead Public School Division areas of priority are:
 Improving Student Learning
 Building Leadership Capacity
 Improving Communications
To ensure a commitment to these priorities, GYPSD’s three-year education plan is student-centered
focused on two main areas:
 SUCCESS FOR ALL (Student Achievement) and
 ALL KIDS ARE OUR KIDS (Inclusive Learning environments ensuring all students are
supported)
We will provide quality learning environments to ensure:
1. Literacy and numeracy success through the POS
2. Student success through appropriate use of educational technologies
3. Our students are calm, alert and ready to learn
4. First Nations, Metis and Inuit (Indigenous) student success
With a focus on literacy and numeracy foundational practices, we will promote effective teaching
practices and purposefully work in a collaborative way.
Summitview Middle School
School Demographics
Summitview is a 4-8 Middle School with a current enrollment of 209 students. We have nine homeroom
teachers a physical education teacher who also teaches French and Science 8 and a principal who
teaches CTF courses. We also have four educational assistants, a fulltime secretary and a librarian. Our
school is dropping in enrollment due to the closure of our mine who was the largest employer in our
town.
Principal’s Message
Our school is characterized by a vision of student learning that is captured by our 'Believe ItAchieve It' philosophy. We view student academic and social success as tightly connected, and
strive to address the whole child's education. We believe that all students can be successful and
that it is important to work together across grade levels to support our students as they build the
skills they need to succeed outside of our building.
In providing our educational program, our teachers collaborate on a regular basis in a learning
cycle that includes identifying student learning needs through data analysis, identifying outcomes
in the curriculum, planning assessment strategies and working together to develop teaching and
learning strategies to meet these outcomes. Teachers work together to develop learning activities
where students are engaged active participants in their learning
Page 2
School: Summitview
Summitview School strives to be a high functioning learning organization from the students to
the teachers and support staff. Shared decision making with our school community is a priority
as we recognize the valuable input stakeholders have in providing quality education. We look
forward to continuing to learn and grow together, building upon our current success for future
improvement.
SUCCESS FOR ALL: Our priorities are to improve student achievement in Literacy and Numeracy
across our school.
a. Quality Learning Environments—Our provincial achievement test results are low. Our
literacy scores are our bright spot with over 80% of our students achieving an acceptable
or excellent score. Our math scores are low and need to be a focus.
b. Literacy and/or Numeracy---Teachers are using across the school Moving Up and
Stepping up resources to improve and unify instruction. Our LLI program is also run
throughout the year to improve our student learning. Our teachers are using the Leaps
and Bounds math resource along with First Steps in Math to identify learning priorities
and guide instruction.
c. Embedding Technology. Our students use technology daily in the classroom. Students
are allowed to bring their own device which is a common resource used to support their
learning. Students also use school purchased tablets and computers to complete
tradition and non-traditional projects. We have a coding class offered as a CTF option
and a robotics course in grade 4 and 5.
ALL KIDS ARE OUR KIDS: (Describe School programs and priorities) Share our students between
like grades and subject areas during RTI time. During CTF grades 6-8 go to a variety of teachers
where they are able to build relationships. LLI program pulls from multiple grade levels. Our P.E.
teacher teaches every student in the building.
a. Meeting Diverse Learning Needs RTI allows students contact with other teachers where
they are able to explain concepts in a new way. Multiple teachers teaching students in
grades 6-8 during CTF allows supports for our students outside of their homeroom
teacher. CRM meetings allow teachers to share experiences and knowledge about
students to collaboratively reach a solution.
b. Mental Health / Getting Ready to Learn (Self Reg / Positive Behavior Strategies) Our
health and wellness champion organizes events which support mental health. We
connect with our local mental health specialist to work together in the best interest of
students with mental health issues with our School Team meetings which are available
once a month. Our FSL works with classes and individuals to support our students in
developing positive behaviors, self- regulation, and mental health strategies. The LST
and administration are reading Stuart Shanker’s works and bringing them to our
classroom teachers as we learn more and as strategies fit. EA’s are focusing on selfregulation as part of their professional growth, including reading Shanker’s books.
Working with Robyn Combres, a behavioral psychologist, to develop positive behavior
strategies for our tier four behavior students. Introducing positive behavior support
training to our staff at the beginning of school and encouraging staff to use this way of
thinking when working with behavior students.
c. Know Our First Nations, Métis and Inuit (Indigenous) Students—Working with our FNMI
liaison to develop contacts with our FNMI parents and elders to support learning in our

school. Cree classes for all students 4-8 as an option. Support Orange Shirt Day teachers
preparing students ahead of time in the classroom, inviting an elder and parents in to
take part in the event, presenting in an assembly about Orange Shirt Day. Pen Pal
program with Susa Creek connecting to their cultural events and building relationships
between schools, Blanket Exercise for staff at a PLC, local history presentations,
aboriginal day celebrations, and bannock making lessons with classes.
Student Engagement (describe how you are using Tell Them From Me surveys): We look at the
data and see what areas need to improve. We are focusing of project based learning as a
component of our teaching to engage students. We try to offer multiple options for CTF where
students can have choice in their option courses.
Parent Engagement (describe how your school engages parents) (i.e.: Thoughtexchange Tool):
We look at our Thoughtexchange information and look for areas to improve. We have regular
parent council meetings where we discuss what is happening in our school and ask for parent
feedback. Our attendance at these is limited though. We encourage parents to take part in our
field trips and learning events in the classroom. We have had parents come in for classroom
presentations. We also have awards assemblies every term to recognize students and we invite
parents to these events.
