chess club returns to delhi ps

From the Principal’s Desk …
We are off to a great start for this new school
year. Students and teachers are busily engaged in all the
new learning activities of a new year, in the classrooms,
in the gym and on the yard. The summer-like weather
has had the students enjoying recess to the max! Even
our youngest JK students seem to have acclimatized to
school and are greeting their new friends and teachers
happily each morning.
Mrs. Dobson and Mr. Hill have been coaching the
Junior and Intermediate Soccer teams, respectively. Each
team is eagerly awaiting their tournament on October 1 or
2. As well, Mrs. Kreller has been
coaching a group of runners in
preparation for the Grade 7/8 Road Race
at
The Norfolk County Fair. We are very appreciative of the
extra time and effort our coaches are putting into
providing these opportunities for our students. We wish
each of our athletes their best performance on the day of
their event!
The celebration of the 125th Anniversary of Delhi
P.S. was very successful and provided a great
opportunity for former students and staff to reminisce
over old times. We are most appreciative to Melissa
Wouters and Mandie Marques for their leadership and
hard work in making this event such a success. These
ladies spent many hours seeking out old pictures and
artifacts and creating display boards for all the
memorabilia. Sincere thanks as well to the parents of the
School Council who came out on the Friday evening to
prepare the gym for the event on Saturday, September 19.
As well, the efforts of all the parents who gave up their
Saturday afternoon to host the event and stay and assist
with cleanup, are much appreciated too. It was a great
community event and a great beginning to a new year at
Delhi P.S
As we move into October we would like to wish all of
our families a Happy Thanksgiving with family and
friends.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
Volunteers are needed to keep our Breakfast and
Snack Programs running. If you are interested in
helping out in either of these worthwhile programs,
which are a great benefit to our students, please
contact Mrs. Rasokas.
REQUESTS FOR TEMPORARY
CHANGES TO TRANSPORTATION
From time to time requests are made to allow students to
make temporary changes to their bus transportation routine.
Please be aware that requests for students to ride a bus that is
different from the one they normally ride will be denied unless
a child’s wellbeing will be jeopardized by sending him/her on
their regular bus. This procedure to only allow emergency
changes to transportation is in keeping with the Policies and
Procedures of Transportation Services.
Any permanent changes to a student’s transportation will be
arranged through Transportation Services. Parents may
discuss changes that are needed with Mrs. Rasokas or with
Transportation Services directly.
LOCKDOWN DRILL
We will be conducting a drill of our lockdown procedures
during the month of October. The purpose is to familiarize
students and staff with the procedures to follow should there
ever be an intruder at the school. While the situation is highly
unlikely, we want to ensure student safety by practicing the
appropriate procedures. Please call the school if you have any
questions about our procedures.
STUDENT SAFETY
In order to keep our students safe, we ask that parents notify
the school in writing of any changes to their child’s daily
routine related to arrival and dismissal from
school. Teachers are very diligent about ensuring
students get on their appropriate buses at the
end of the day. Any changes to their regular
routine need to be clearly shared in either their
agenda or in a note to the teacher. If you are picking up your
child from school, please be sure to stop in the office and sign
them out. Thank you in advance for your help in keeping all of
our students safe.
ALLERGIES AND SENSITIVITIES
Please be aware that we have students and staff with
allergies and/or sensitivities to peanuts and scents. Please
respect our need to keep everyone safe at school, and do not
send peanut products to school. Also, please leave scented
products at home when you are coming to our school. We
very much appreciate your cooperation with these policies.
PERSONAL ITEMS AT SCHOOL
Students are reminded that we discourage bringing personal
items to school that have personal or monetary value. We
cannot be certain that personal items will not be damaged or
lost while on the bus or at school. Students and their families
need to be aware that desks and coat closets are school
property and there is no expectation of privacy on the part of
students. Therefore, a search of such property is permissible
by the school principal. In this case, the principal would be
acting under the authority of the Education Act to maintain
proper order and discipline in the school.
LABELS FOR EDUCATION
Please send in your Campbell’s Soup
labels. Students earn points for their
Colour House and the school earns
money for educational needs.
SAVE THE SLEEVES FOR D.P.S.
We use the PIN to collect points for
items for the school
ATTENDANCE
Please advise the school by 9:00 a.m. if your child will
be late or absent. Phone messages can be left at any
time, day or night.
O.P.P. Safety Presentation
On Wednesday evening,
October 28, 2015, at
7:00 p.m., the Delhi P.S.
School Council is sponsoring a presentation for
all parents, Officer Ed. Sanchuk of the Norfolk
O.P.P. Officer Sanchuk will be discussing the
Choking Game some young people have
become involved in throughout our county. As
well, he will be sharing information for parents
about Cyberbullying and Safe use of Social
Media. All parents are invited to this very
worthwhile presentation. Come out and learn
more about helping to keep all our students safe.
VOLUNTEERING AT DELHI
Over the years, we have been fortunate to have many
volunteers support the variety of programs and activities we
provide at the school. To ensure safety for the students, all
volunteers are required by the GEDSB to provide the school
with a Police Record Check, which includes a Vulnerable
Sector Screening. There is no cost for this but the Police
Record Check must be given to the school before you can
volunteer. Police Record Checks are valid for two years. Please
call or drop in if you would like to volunteer at our school.
Melissa Wouters and Mandie Marques enjoyed a
great afternoon at the 125 Anniversary Celebration of
D.P.S. Mayor Charlie Luke joined us to welcome the
community and officially open our celebration.
Does your child arrive at
school ready to learn?
Your child works hard to do well in school,
but you can contribute to his success, too.
Be sure he has:
• Enough sleep. Children between seven and 12 years
of age need 10 to 12 hours each night. Proper rest will
help your child concentrate in class.
• A healthy breakfast. Studies show that kids who eat
breakfast do better in school, earn better grades and
have fewer behavior problems.
• High expectations. When you believe your child can
do his best, he’ll believe it too. Tell him that you know
he’ll be working hard in school and you’re excited
about how much he is learning.
• Have a backpack plan. Have your son put everything
in his backpack before going to bed. Then have him
put it by the door.
Once your son learns you won’t be responsible for him,
he’ll start being responsible for himself.
CHESS CLUB RETURNS TO DELHI P.S
We are pleased that Pastor Kring has begun his work
with all grade 3 students in the Chess Club. All grade 3
students will have a lesson about playing chess in the
classroom and then will be invited to take part in the
Chess Club that will be held each Friday, starting
October 9, at 2nd break, in the gym.
Young People’s Group
How can parents
foster responsibility
in children?
Q: My son frequently misses the bus. Then I’m late for
work because I have to drive him to school. He also
forgets things. I end up taking his book report or his
math homework to school. How can I get him to be
more responsible?
A: Right now, your son doesn’t have to be
responsible. He knows that Super Mom is
ready to help.
It will never be easier for your
son to make a few mistakes—and learn
from them—than it is right now in
elementary school. But first, he has to
know that you’re about to stop being his
own personal rescue squad.
You should also:
• Talk with his teacher. Tell her what you plan to do.
(She’ll probably be glad.) Make sure she knows that if
he forgets his things at home, he may not have a
book or report in class. Tell her you want him to live
with the consequences.
• Begin bedtime and morning routines. Set an alarm
clock. Make bedtime earlier if he still can’t get up in
the morning.
