In 25 years and 115 age divisions Hampshire had won a title only once – the 60’s in 1997 then this year we add 3 wins – in 60’s, 65’s and 70’s. This is the 60’s team: From the left, Jim Rumens, Pamela Stevens, Diane Fawn, Alan Dixon, Bob Collier (Team Captain), Geof Rofe (Badminton England President) Pauline Davis, John Davis and Linda Coombes. To see the other teams and the report please go to page 3. The views expressed in this Newsletter are not necessarily those of the Hampshire Badminton Association Ltd Hampshire Badminton 1 DEADLINE FOR NEXT ISSUE 22nd August 2011 Once again we are approaching the end of a very busy season, having survived the snow and hopefully the current financial situation. There are quite a few matches and tournaments still to be played, not only because of deferment due to the snow but because they were originally scheduled to be played in April. The Senior teams have had mixed results, the 1st team, currently 6th position in Premier B still have a 3 match weekend to play April 9th/10th at York, whilst the 2nd and 3rd teams have one match apiece to play. The 2nd team, at time of writing, currently lie top of Division 1D, having had a superb 8-7 win over Wiltshire in their last match. It is doubtful if this will be the final position as the other Counties in this division also have games still to play and Surrey, 1 point behind, have two games in hand. The 3 rd team in 4D are sitting mid table and should comfortably stave off relegation. Meanwhile the Juniors' highlights normally all come towards the end of the season, hence few reports for them in this issue. The final of the U15 Team Challenge is due to take place 5/6th March and we may still be able to get the result in "STOP PRESS" but not a report. Meanwhile our Veterans have done us proud winning 3 age groups in the ICC events. See front cover for our jubilant O.60's team. Photos of the winning O.65's and O.70's follow on page 3. "Oh to be a page 3 pin-up"! One sadness to report in this issue is the death of Doris Phillips at the end of February. Originally a member of NALGO (later Unison) in the Southampton League, she represented Southampton District on the Hampshire Management Committee for many years. Those of us who are of a more mature age will particularly remember this lovely lady. I'm sure the Districts have been equally busy and, hopefully, having fun, but I haven't received any specific reports from them so am taking this opportunity to remind them that if they wish to share their badminton experiences with the rest of us please send me suitable articles for publication with photographs if possible. Once again I hope that all our Clubs and members have had a successful season, not just good results in matches and tournaments but entertaining and enjoyable club sessions, not hindered by too many injuries. Wishing you all a Happy Easter and Summer break. Come back refreshed in the Autumn, full of vigour and enthusiasm for the game we love. Janet Palmer, Editor. Hampshire Badminton 2 Veteran’s Inter County Championship Report by Margaret Houlton O65’s National Champions Team, from the left, Mary Lovell, Margaret Houlton, Vicki Betts (holding the trophy) Duncan Paine, Mike Parratt and Peter Coates. Also in the ICC team was Russ Chaplin. O70’s first ever National Champions Team, from the left, Mike Hayes, Peter Corbett, Ann Jacobs, Graham Walker, Meelee Bruley, Diane Cooper, and Jim Harding with Geof Rofe. Hampshire Badminton 3 continued overleaf The start of the New Year was time for the Inter County Championship and this year was the first time that 70+ was an official event. Due to a lack of players (50 players competed over the weekend, the majority on both days) the 55’s team was withdrawn which strengthened the 60’s. The 40’s, 60’s, 65’s and 70’s all played at Hatfield in the premier division while the 45’s and 50’s were in division 1’s at Bournemouth. The 40’s team of Conrad Spry / Martyn Isherwood, Debbie Miller / Kay Sargent, Mark Mottershaw / Julie Newbold, and Paul Bishop / Lesley Barton kept to the same combinations on the first day. The level doubles were won against Kent for a 2 - 2 draw, followed by ladies and against Hertfordshire for a 4 - 0 win. Adam Turner replaced Paul on Sunday and changes were made in the combinations. Against Yorkshire Martyn / Julie and Conrad / Debbie both won while Kay / Lesley were winning until Lesley needed an injury time out restricting her subsequent movement so another 2 – 2 draw. For the final match v Gloucestershire Debbie / Kay won but Mark / Conrad, Martyn / Julie and Adam / Lesley lost for a 3 – 1 defeat. 6 points and 4th place out of 7. The 45’s team of Denise Karnecki / Karen Manners, Dave Pratt / Keith Young, Dave Brett / Julie Taylor, and Laurie Hillman / Linda McCallan had convincing 4 – 0 wins against Dorset, Devon, Suffolk and Kent but came up against a very strong Hertfordshire team achieving the same results. The ladies were the only winners in this match so the team finished 2nd out of 6. The 50’s used 5 men and 6 ladies over the 2 days and rang the changes throughout, particularly in mixed. The squad was Dave Bassett, Paul Collins, Tony Coombes, Emerson Cumberbatch, Roy Pullen (Sun only), Lorraine Collins, Lesley Hawkes, Debbie Webb, Angela Williams, Jenny Skilton (Sat only), Julie Kingston (Sun only). The team started with a 2 - 2 draw against Wiltshire, then followed 3 – 1 wins against Sussex and Surrey 2nds. 3 – 1 losses to Devon and Glos followed on Sunday finishing with a 4 – 0 win against Somerset. This meant they finished equal second on points but came third out of 7 on count back having lost to Devon. The 60’s were another team to continually change the lineup: Linda Coombes, Pauline Davis, Diane Fawn, Pamela Stevens, Bob Collier, John Davis, Alan Dixon and Jim Rumens being the players involved. They started with a draw against Avon before beating Yorkshire and Cornwall 4 – 0. Next day came a draw against Lancashire and a 3 – 1 win versus Leicestershire. To win the championship a win against Kent in the last match was needed. Jim/Alan won the men's, Pam/ Diane took the ladies in 3 while John/Pauline lost first mixed in 3 so all down to Bob/Linda in the last game. They duly won, so Hampshire and Avon finished on 10 points each but Hampshire had won 18 events to Avon’s 16 so topped the table. The 65’s kept their team format the same; Vicki Betts and Margaret Houlton played ladies, Mike Parratt and Mary Lovell the mixed, while Duncan Paine played men’s with Peter Coates on Saturday and Russ Chaplin on Sunday. The team started by beating Avon and Staffordshire 3 –0 then had a tight game against Kent. The ladies' was won in 2 ends but the other two were both lost in 3 ends (mixed 22/20 in the third). Although a 2 – 1 loss, the sets were the same and Kent only won 3 more points. Next day ladies and mixed were won against Wiltshire and Nottinghamshire before everyone won against Surrey. This left the team on 10 points with Notts but having beaten them Hampshire topped this table. The 70’s were allowed to play with 2 instead of 3 ladies if necessary and this happened to Hampshire on Saturday due to a late withdrawal. To further test their stamina they had to play all the other teams both days, so Diane Cooper and Ann Jacobs had to play 4 ladies games and 2 mixed games each on Saturday resulting in 15 and 16 sets respectively. Peter Corbett and Graham Walker also played both days while Meelee Bruley came in to play mixed on Sunday (leaving Ann and Diane to have another 10 sets of ladies) and Jim Harding replaced Mike Hayes. On Saturday they beat Surrey 2 – 1, Gloucestershire 3 – 0, Nottinghamshire 2 – 1, and Kent 3 – 0. On Sunday the results were all 2 – 1 wins so an undefeated team and winners of the Championship. The ICC followed the introduction of a veterans’ team competition by Ken Milne in 1985. It was taken over by the then Badminton Association of England in 1986 when 40's and 45's teams were involved. The next year a 50’s competition was included followed by 55’s in 1993, 60’s in 1996, 65’s in 2003 and 70’s in 2011. In 25 years and 115 age divisions Hampshire had only won once – the 60’s in 1997 then this year we add 3 wins – in 60’s, 65’s and 70’s. Hampshire Badminton 4 An excellent report, Margaret, giving detailed reports of all the teams' results in this competition. What a success rate in one season. Well done, particularly to the 3 winning age groups. EDITOR Hampshire Veterans’ Open Tournament Sponsored by Graphic Solutions Played at The Westgate Centre on 22/23 January 2011 This year the tournament had been upgraded to a ‘B’ event on the veteran’s circuit, but there were a few local absentees due to the Scottish International on the same weekend. There were 25 new faces to Hampshire besides a handful of home players making their debut. In total 116 players represented 19 counties, 21 pairs in men, 19 pairs in ladies and 35 pairs in mixed. 21 of the 24 players in mixed 60 and 65 played both days – this out of 34 playing levels and mixed. The snow in December caused some postponements with rearranged matches having to be fitted in to an already crowded fixture list. Surrey were the visitors for the 40’s team of Mark Prictoe/Dan Sheppard, Mark Mottershaw/ Adam Turner, Debbie Miller/Kay Sargent, and Denise Karnecki/Alison Gerrett. The Surrey men were too strong for their Hampshire opponents but Hampshire replied by winning 3 of the ladies. However this strength showed in the mixed with only Adam/Alison winning at 3rd in the 4 – 8 defeat. Kent were determined to play at the start of December despite the poor weather conditions and found the home team ready for them. This time Barrie Capell/ Mark P and Adam /Mark M were unbeaten as were Debbie/Kay, while Caz Lee/Karen Manners lost both their games in 3 sets. The home team won 2 mixed to give them an 8 – 4 victory. The next match was Sussex away – postponed from 2nd Jan. Conrad Spry/Mark M won both their games in 3 ends but Adam/Martin Richardson could not add to the score. Debbie/Kay won 1 of their games but Caz/Alison lost both to go into the mixed 5 – 3 down. Conrad/Debbie at 1st and Adam/Caz at 3rd won their mixed comfortably while Mark/Kay and Martin/Alison both lost in 3 so overall a 5 – 7 defeat. Hampshire Badminton 6 Unfortunately it was not possible to get a team to travel to Gillingham (Kent) or Tiptree (Essex) so these matches had to be conceded. The 45’s team entertained Kent in November and were in dominant form. Denise Karnecki/ Linda McCallan, Karen Manners/Laura Gardner, and Dave Pratt/Keith Young won all their games while Laurie Hillman/Geoff Pomeroy beat the 2nd pair before Geoff suffered an Achilles injury which effectively ended his season. 2 of the mixed were won for a 9 – 3 victory. Their next match was away to Sussex and the team was Martyn Isherwood/Simon Atkinson, Dave Brett/ Keith, Denise/Karen and Linda/ Julie Taylor. The only games lost by Hampshire were to the Sussex 1st ladies pair so a 10 – 2 victory. The next match was the return fixture at Westgate. This time Dave P/Simon and Dave B/Phil Rickard won all the men’s' while Denise/Karen beat the 2nd ladies pair. Julie Kingston came in as a late replacement but was unable to win a game with Linda. 1st and 2nd mixed were won to give a 7 – 5 win. The 50’s team of Tony Coombes/Emerson Cumberbatch, Dave Bassett/Steve Royston, Debbie Webb/Lesley Hawkes and Jenny Skilton/Heather Farquhar entertained the strong Surrey team. Always a tough fixture Dave/Heather won 4th mixed to prevent a whitewash. The next match was away in Middlesex. Dave/Emerson and Debbie/Lesley both won their 2 level doubles' games while Tony/Roy Pullen and Lorraine Collins/Jenny contributed one each so 6 – 2 up going into the mixed. Tony/Debbie and Roy/Lorraine won so an 8 – 4 win. Kent was the next destination for the team. Emerson/Tony won 1 of their games but although going to 3 sets in both games Steve /Dave failed to win either. Debbie/Angela Williams beat the Kent 2 nd pair but Lesley/Paula Bray found the opposition too strong. Although 6 – 2 down going into the mixed the team won 3 of the 4 mixed games to make a final score of 7 – 5 in favour of Kent. Kent were the visitors for the 55’s team and a very tight game was the result. John Davis/Sam Armadass won both their games in 3 ends while Chris Cawthorne/Jim Rumens lost both in 3 sets. Pauline Davis/Christine Shawley and Carole Hunt/Joyce Hood both won 1 and lost 1 in 2 ends so 4 – 4 going into the mixed with Kent 2 sets up. John/Pauline and Sam/Joyce both won in 3 ends but Jim/Carole and Chris/Christine lost in 2 so a 6 – 6 final result but Kent getting the extra point. Essex were the next visitors after the snow postponement. The team of Pauline D/Joyce, Pauline Prior/Pam Stevens, John/Paul Collins, and Sam/Teli Mendhir lost the match 3 - 9. Kent was the destination for the following match and unfortunately Hampshire were only able to field 3 men so borrowed one from Kent to give everyone their games. Pauline D/Linda Coombes won both their games while Joyce/Pauline P won 1. Chris/ Peter Das lost one of their games 22/20, 22/20 but the score was 5 – 3 down going into the mixed as John’s scores did not count. Peter/Joyce won at 3 rd mixed so a 4 - 8 defeat. The 60’s entertained Sussex in their next match. Jim Rumens/Bob Collier, Peter Coates/Chris Pitt, Linda Coombes/Diane Fawn won all their level doubles while Mary Lovell/Vicki Betts won 1 and lost the other in 3 sets. All the mixed were won to give an 11 – 1 victory. The match against Kent was away and it featured a very different line–up. John Davis/Bob won 1 game but Alan Dixon/Horace Mitchell could not add to the score. Pauline Davis/Pam Stevens and Pauline Prior/Linda won all their ladies but the latter were taken to 3 sets in one game. 5 – 3 up going into the mixed. John/Pauline D lost in 3, and Bob/Linda won in 2 at 2 nd while 3rd and 4th were lost in 2 so 6 – 6. It was also equal on sets but Kent had 11 more points so a losing draw. The 65’s fixtures did not start again till the New Year due to Middlesex conceding and then the Essex match being a victim of the weather. Mary Lovell/Margaret Houlton/Vicki Betts won all the ladies against Surrey but Mike Parratt/Peter Coates/Mike Hayes could not add to the score so 3 – 3 going into the mixed. Mike P/Mary at 1st and Mike H/ Vicki at 3rd both won their mixed so a 5 – 4 victory. Duncan Paine came in as the 3rd man against Kent, and the results remained the same. The ladies again did not concede a set but the men found it tough. This time all the mixed went to 3 ends with Hampshire victorious at 1 and 3, the latter 21 – 19 in the 3rd end so a Hampshire win. The 70’s match against Kent was disrupted by the very late arrival of one of the visiting ladies. Peter Corbett/Graham Walker/Jim Harding won all their games while Diane Cooper did not play a counting ladies and Ann Jacobs/Meelee Bruley lost their game. 1 st and 2nd mixed were won for a 7 – 2 win. The next match was a visit to Dorset and the same men recorded the same results. Linda Pullen came in as 1 st lady as the ladies won their top game, so 4 – 2 up going into the mixed. 2nd and 3rd mixed were won so a 6 – 3 win. As Hampshire Badminton 7 neither Essex nor Hampshire were able to field a 3rd lady, their match was played as 4 men and 2 ladies with Hampshire winning 9 – 0. The team then visited Surrey where they won 7 – 2. HAMPSHIRE SENIOR GOLD TOURNAMENT - DECEMBER 2010 Report by Diana Troke Following a panic situation due to computer failures and the entry forms not being available to remind players of the date, I really thought that I would have to cancel the event. Panic over after an e-mail contact with the players, we were back in business. Although the entries were very slow coming in we did finally have sufficient people wanting to play. My concern is that to turn people away from an event is sad. Unfortunately it is happening to the same players time and time again because they cannot get accepted into the events due to their rankings not being high enough. How can players improve their rankings with this situation? It is a catch 22 problem. At Westgate we only have five courts which were full the whole weekend. There was never an empty court. I do commend the players who were very patient. I think it has something to do with the fact that the playing and the relaxing facilities are second to none. It was rewarding to see the Women’s Singles entry being well supported; it does make for a better competition. A question I would like to ask the players: “Do you ever have a conversation with others players? Not texting or e-mailing, just plain old-fashioned conversation?” I have asked this question because the number of players who enter the tournaments asking for “partner wanted” has increased to such an extent it is worrying. Tournament organisers do not always have sufficient knowledge to partner up players of the correct standards or whether they want to play together. The tournament was well attended and during the weekend there were some really hard-fought matches – lots of three setters. It was pleasing to see many of the younger players competing against the diehards. Congratulations to all the players for their sportsmanlike behaviour all weekend, it was a pleasure to organise and work with you all during the event. Thanks to the Committee, the catering youngsters who helped Margaret Houlton, the Centre personnel and our new President Trevor Shanks for presenting the prizes. Many thanks – and hope to see you all this coming December. Another excellent Open Tournament well supported with 32 Men's Singles entries, 29 Ladies' Singles, 22 Men's Doubles pairs, 14 Ladies' pairs and 20 Mixed, including a good sprinkling of Hampshire players. Sadly, Anna Showan was the only Hampshire player to reach a final only to lose out to the vastly experienced Georgina Bland, with Jo Dix and Ben Muir losing semi-finalists in their singles. Chris Evans also reached the semis in his Men's doubles as did Sarah Burgess/Kelly Holdway in the Ladies' doubles. We were again fortunate to have the services of our gallant band of Umpires for the Finals day. Thanks to Nicky and Bill Bartholomew, Patti Cunningham (all from Hampshire) and Bernard Shelley (from Surrey) Hampshire Badminton 9 1st Senior Team - Weekend 15th/16th January 2011 "A disappointing weekend" - report by Trevor Shanks Our first match was against Avon who were currently in 4th position after the first three matches. We didn’t get off to a very encouraging start by losing both Men’s' Singles. Ben Muir, our No.1 in place of the injured Ben Tier, lost a close match with Joshua Green 21/18, 22/20 and Adam Rickenbach took his match to three games before losing 20/22, 21/13, 21/16 to the experienced Chris Coles. Jo Dix then played Hannah Littlecott (late of Hampshire) She also went down in three games, Hannah winning 21/17, 16/21, 22/20. Josie Latimer finally got us a point on the score sheet beating Alison Marr 21/18, 21/12. Both Men's Doubles went to our opponents. Brothers Matthew and Dan Corby lost 18/21,21/15,21/17 to first pair Adam Smith/James Phillips while Adam Porter/Geoff Ball proved too good for Chris Evans/Adam Rickenbach winning 21/12, 21/19. Sarah Burgess/Kelly Holdway won their first game against Mariana Agathangelou 21/11 but unfortunately the next two went to Avon 21/16, 21/16. Jo playing with Jenny Crump at 2nd Ladies easily accounted for Sarah Boyce/Alison Marr 21/16, 21/6. Only our second point! The Mixed were shared. Chris/Kelly lost 21/18, 21/11 to Chris Coles/Mariana Agathangelou but our second pair, Dan and Sarah beat James Phillips/Sarah Boyce 24/22, 17/21, 22/20 to leave the final score 7/3 in favour of Avon. We were well supported, but unfortunately to little avail, by the presence of high-level officials from the County - Our Chairman, two Vice-Presidents, Graham Troke and Jill Robertson and Secretary Hazel Marks. With the other results, Leinster beating Buckinghamshire 6/4, Yorkshire2 winning 8/2 against Kent, Cheshire beating Surrey 2nd 7/3 and finally Lancashire and Worcestershire drawing 5/5 the table had changed considerably. Surrey 2 still lead with 28 points, one above Leinster and Avon one adrift from them. On 23 points we were now equal fourth with Cheshire and Yorkshire 2nds. During the lunch break on Saturday the team agreed to be photographed to mark the occasion – a rare opportunity, because they are naturally a shy and retiring group, as you can see… From the left: Back row: Dan Corby, Adam Rickenbach, Chris Evans, Ben Muir, Matt Corby. Front row: Josie Latimer, Jo Dix, ???, Sarah Burgess, Jenny Crump and Hampshire Team Manager Trevor Shanks Badminton 10 Guess who the “hidden” player is. See page 14 for the answer. The afternoon match was against Lancashire who were in 9th place with only 12 points. We were optimistic about our chances of gaining a few points. Ben Muir got off to a good start with a 21/9, 21/11 win against Tom Monk but Adam lost his first game 21/11 to Ian Palethorpe and just lost the second 23/21. We recovered by taking both Ladies' Singles easily. Jo beat Cathy Attfield 21/10, 21/3 and Josie took little time disposing of Gill Sowden 21/5, 21/6. With no disrespect to our two ladies neither of the Lancashire ladies looked like singles' players. Matthew and Dan Corry lost 21/15, 21/7 to Ian Palethorpe/Gary Fox while Chris and Adam went to three games before beating Tom Dunlop/Mark Tuttle 21/18, 15/21, 21/17 to get our fourth point. The Ladies' Doubles were shared. Sarah and Kelly lost 21/17, 9/21, 17/21 to Jo Nicholas/Sophie Sankey but Jo and Jenny easily beat the two singles players Gill and Cathy 21/12, 21/7. Lancashire won both Mixed Doubles. Chris and Kelly went down 21/9, 21/16 to Gary Fox/Jo Nicholas while Dan and Sarah lost 21/12, 21/13 to Mark Tuttle/Sophie Sankey. A 5 /5 draw which left us now in 5th place in the table with only 28 points. Avon had a fine 9/1 victory over Surrey 2nds to now head the table with 35 points and Leinster, who had drawn 5/5 with Worcestershire, were in 2nd place with 32. Ben started our Sunday match, against Cheshire, with a fine three game victory over Tim Cope 19/21, 21/15, 21/10. Unfortunately that was to be our last point for some considerable time. We lost the next six matches on court. Adam lost another close three setter, this time 20/22, 21/18, 21/17 to Daniel Font. Jo lost 21/18, 21/18 to Helen Davis while Josie won her first game against Claire Weaver 21/11 but lost the next two 21/12, 21/15. Both Men's matches went to the Cheshire pairings. Chris and Adam just lost their first game 22/20 to Daniel Font/Matt Sprake and the second 21/11. In the Ladies' Doubles Sarah and Kelly went down in three games to Gill Dabek/Helen Davies, 16/21, 21/16, 21/19. Our second point came when Jo and Jenny beat Claire Weaver/Anna Wilson 22/20, 21/17. The Mixed were divided, Chris/Kelly lost 21/14, 21/15 to Matthew Nottingham/Gill Dabek whilst Dan and Sarah got the final point beating Matt Sprake/Anna Wilson 21/17, 21/13 to leave the final result a 7/3 victory for Cheshire. The table after this weekend was as follows: Avon 41points Cheshire 37 points Leinster 36 points Surrey 2 33 points Yorkshire 2 32 points Hampshire 1 31 points Worcestershire 26 points Buckinghamshire 26 points Lancashire 23 points Kent 15 points We have a lot to do during the final weekend at York in early April when our opponents will be Surrey 2, Worcestershire & Kent. A good result in the match against Avon was crucial to a good weekend for Hampshire. This was always going to be a fiercely fought match as always between these two Counties, as the Ladies' Singles match between Jo & Hannah indicated. Hannah must have been overjoyed at winning this one as she had been deemed not good enough for the Hampshire 1st team!! A bad result which just got worse in the next match as surely we would have expected to have won this one with a good margin to spare. Our heads were obviously down for the last match of the weekend, despite Ben winning the first game of this match. Both Jo/Jenny & Dan/Sarah restored some honour to the side with their late wins adding a valuable further two points to the overall result. The team needs to be at it's best for the final weekend in York. EDITOR ********************* Hampshire 2 vs Dorset 1 & Hampshire 3 vs Isle of Wight 1 Played at The Westgate Centre, 8th January 2011 Hampshire Badminton 11 What can I say....100% was a common theme for the both matches….with maximum points picked up from both sides. An 11-4 win by the 2nd team and an even better 12-3 win by the 3rd team. With the 2nd team being 3-1 up after the singles, a good win by both girls and also a manflu infested Andy Penn – who was seen lying about on court a couple of times…..well he claims diving, but didn’t make any contact with the shuttle. We won all 4 men’s doubles, with both pairs going to 3 sets with their 1st pair. Anna Showan had got through to the second day of the Wimbledon Gold Tournament, so was unable to play in the match. With a couple of others unavailable, Sitara Bali and Sophia Rapacioli were called up from the 3rd team. They had a great win in 3 close sets against the 2nd Dorset pair, but unfortunately didn’t quite have enough against the experienced Dorset 1st pair. Sadly Josie Latimer and Beulah Moody lost both their games in 3 tight games, so the match was 8-4 going into the mixed. We needed 2 out of 3 for maximum bonus win points. Well we took all 3. Jon Hepworth and Josie comfortably beat their 1st pair then Beulah made up for the doubles loss winning with Andy. James Todd and Sitara the followed up winning in 2 sets to give us the 11-4 win. A fantastic performance from all members of the team. We welcomed back Alex Ferguson from injury and were grateful to James Taylor for playing 2nd Singles. It's bright times with the young girls in Hampshire at the moment, with Sitara, Sophia stepping up and playing really well, Josie, Anna and Beulah all performing and developing well. Add to that the absent Vikki Williams this weekend; we really do have a generation of top county ladies for years to come. Both 3rd team Men’s Singles players were close, but just missed out on picking up the win. Dave Chartres losing 18 and 19 and young Nick Downard winning his 1st set, but unfortunately missing out in 3. Sarah Stannett had a comfortable win at number 1 ladies singles, and continued her winning form on for the doubles and the mixed…..4 out of 4! We won 7 out of 8 doubles. Kieran Dix & Dave Chartres and Jimmy Dick & the returning Mark Peckham for his two hundredth and something cap, all put in 2 set winning performances against the best of the Isle of Wight. The girls could not quite match the fellas. Sarah Stannett and Kate Lutman won both of theirs in 2 sets, Fauzia Arif (who’d only just returned from a month in New Zealand) partnering Persia Keens, won one in 2 sets, but narrowly missed out on winning the other 21-16 in the 3rd set. This put us 9-3 up in the match and needing 1 mixed to take the bonus points. Well all 3 pairs, picked up a win in convincing 2 set style. Dave and Sarah, Kieran and Kate and Jimmy and Persia all played really well to give us the great win of 12-3. A real sightseeing Jimmy run round ol’ Pecks, some great performances from the young girls, with the oldest girl in either team being 26, but most around late teens, its bright times ahead. This is a précis of Westgate Performance Centre players & Team Westgate's participation and successes in Junior Gold, Silver & Bronze Tournaments. JANUARY 2011 BATH U17 GOLD & GOLD STAR A number of Westgate PC players performed at this tournament with some excellent results. Sarah Stannett and Sarah Gray had tough draws and did not progress beyond the group stages. However, Melissa Stride played well to reach the semi final of the Gold Girls' Singles beating England selected 8 Nations player Brodie Miller in a tough 3 set quarter final match. Running out of steam, she then lost to another England U15 player Jess Pugh who went on to win the event. In the other half of the draw, Hayley Duckett began to find form and reached the semi-final only to lose in a tough 3 set match against Eve O'Sullivan. Westgate PC had some interest in the Gold Star event when Lynnlette Aung was unexpectedly given top seeding position. Despite a couple of hard tussles in her box she progressed to the semi-finals where she easily beat Becci Crawshaw. Becci had previously beaten the much feared Jordan Hart from Wales. In the other half of the draw, unseeded Viki Williams battled through to the semi-final beating some tough opponents including Team Westgate's Kerri Scott and Alice Feesey (De). In the semi her good form continued as she ran out winner against Claire Weaver (winner of the Bournemouth U19). This set up an all Westgate final against compatriot Lynnlette, this being their 3rd meeting of the season. Viki started the final in relentless form and quickly took the first set with her one way traffic approach. Viki started the 2nd set in the same way but after a few words of encouragement at the 11 break, Lynnlette took the 2nd set to level the score. Viki on the day however was unstoppable and finished the game off 21/15. Team Westgate also had some interest in the final of the Ladies' Doubles when Kerri Scott/Jenny Moore pulled off an unexpected victory against the more established pair of Viki Williams/Eve O'Sullivan, unable to raise their game after some earlier hard singles matches. CHELTENHAM U13 GOLDS Team Westgate's Max Flynn reached the semis of the Boys' Singles only to be beaten by the eventual winner Harry Arksey 21/16 21/18. With his Mixed partner Ann Leany he reached the same stage losing 21/17 21/18. In his doubles with partner Alex Mitchell he lost in 3 sets 12/21 21/15 21/10. FEBRUARY 2011 WINCHESTER U13 SILVER Team Westgate had some convincing wins at the Westgate Badminton Centre over the weekend of the 5th/6th February with Tom Frisby winning the Boys' Singles and Libby McMorrow winning the Girl's final, this being Libby's first year of competition. Libby McMorrow, winner of the Girls’ Singles, with Bernard Lynch of Westgate BC Tom Frisby, left, with England star Andrew Smith and runner-up Ben Roberts from Oxfordshire Hampshire Badminton 16 WINCHESTER U15 BRONZE Further success for Team Westgate with Sean Flower winning the Boys' Singles beating James Ellaway in the final and the unseeded pairing of Alex Horner/Ross Green taking the Boy's doubles crown by beating the seeded Ben Egginton/Lee Houselander in their final match. U15 DEVON SILVER A clean sweep for Team Westgate at this event with Sikun Chen winning the Boys' Singles and also taking the Boys' Doubles title with partner Jason Wong. GRANTHAM U13 GOLD Max Flynn playing with Alex Mitchell won the gold in the Boys' Doubles beating David Jones/Harry Arksey in an exciting 3 set final 19/21 21/18 21/16. Max, 5th seed in the Boys' Singles, took the bronze medal after beating Danish 3rd seed in 2 sets in the quarter finals. He then went on to lose to David Jones who took the Gold after beating Harry Arksey in the final. HOME COUNTIES U13 SILVER After a successful Hampshire weekend, Libby McMorrow and Tom Frisby continued their winning ways with strong performances against some difficult opponents. Libby took Bronze in her Singles after finishing best runner up of her group, only missing on going through to the semi-finals on points. Libby then paired up with Chloe Wakley (Dorset) in a new Girls' partnership. Proving to be a very strong pair, they found themselves in a three way tie for 1st place. Having won more games and points than the other two pairs, they took Gold on this first outing together. Libby was then joined by Tom Frisby, her County Mixed partner, where their understanding of each other's game was evident. They dominated their three group games and then pushed aside the No.1seeds,Ben Richards/Rosemary Allen (Surrey/Essex) 16/14 15/7.They then went on to take Gold winning a hard fought match 15/13 15/13, with some outstanding net play, against the No.3 seeds, Sam Lyle/Claire Mills (Surrey). Tom had also met Sam Lyle in the final of the singles, having beaten Ben Roberts for the second time in a week and a close game in the quarters against Ben Richards 17/15 15/7. However, although taking the final against Sam to three ends, lost 15/11 11/15 15/7 settling for Silver, having found it difficult at times to deal with his opponent's sheer size standing at almost 6ft. Tom Frisby and Libby McMorrow with their haul of medals at the Home Counties U13 Silver NOTTINGHAM U17 GOLD Team Westgate's Viki Williams got through to the Gold Star Singles' Final after beating No. 1 seed Holly Smith (Du) in her semi final match, before losing to Chloe Birch (Yo) in the tight 3 set final match. Team Westgate's Hayley Duckett got through to the Girls' Singles final of the Gold event, losing in a close 3 set match to Lancastrian Terry-Lee Holmes. However on the morning Shirley was not well so the squad was left in the hands of Daniel Stride. We arrived in Sussex having to play 5 other counties, each match 7 games consisting of: 3 mixed, 2 singles and 2 doubles each, 1 game to 21. Our luck was in - we had Sussex first, this was a good opening match by us winning all 3 opening mixed matches with Tanya Pinto playing exceptionally well at the net. The final score was 6-1 to Hampshire. The next county to play was Kent, this was going to be more of a challenge, but the squad seemed to be up for it. Having won 2 out of the 3 mixed with Eleanor Dean and Jason Wong producing a confident mixed performance we only needed 2 more wins, both Kelvin Latimer and Melissa Stride didn’t let us down in both of their singles and we beat Kent 5-2. Our last game before lunch was against Middlesex. Lisa Pearson and Tanya had a great doubles match which boosted the confidence of the whole squad and we won 6-1. Lunch was a well deserved rest but the big one was next. Daniel realized this and straight after lunch had the whole squad warming up and stretching to be ready to face Surrey. The match against Surrey started well. We won 2 out of the 3 mixed with Lisa and Sikun Chen getting a well deserved win. The squad was getting tense and all eyes were on Kelvin and Melissa to get the singles, however not all went to plan, unfortunately Kelvin could not claim his match and it was essential for Melissa to win. Melissa had a tough 1st half but came through giving Hampshire the win we needed. This made the score 3-2 to Hampshire. One more game to get, Lisa and Eleanor had a very hard doubles match but it ended with us drawing with Surrey 3 all. The last match was vital. Sikun and Jason had to win their doubles & both were determined to do this for Hampshire. It was a very tense and close game but the boys pulled it off and Hampshire won 4-3. Only Berkshire left to play and knowing we were already through to the finals was great as everybody was getting tired, the squad played as a team and we won. Having won all 5 matches we go through to the final in 1st place with Surrey going through as 2nd. The U15’s showed that playing as a team and supporting each other they could achieve anything. Fantastic day had by all. This report just missed the last edition. Well done to this team and good luck for the finals. EDITOR THE ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF BadmintonASSOCIATION 18 THE HAMPSHIREHampshire BADMINTON LTD will take place at 7.30pm on Thursday 23 June 2011 A Plea from one Secretary to another I have several jobs for the County – I am County Secretary, County Registration Secretary, a member of the Tournament Committee, assistant to the Newsletter Editor and occasional tea maker and bottle washer. But just like any other Secretary, I have to rely on my records of contacts to keep in touch with member Clubs, just as a Club Secretary has to know how to contact every member of that Club in order to run the Club successfully. This season I have experienced greater difficulty than ever before in obtaining updates when it comes to changes in our member Clubs’ Officers. I have sent out messages to District Secretaries asking for lists of contact details for Club Secretaries – but have received replies from only some District Secretaries. I have sent emails to addresses I think belong to Club Secretaries, but have not always received a reply. I really need someone to help me!! There are two issues. One is simple and connected to this publication. I need the postal addresses of all our current Club Secretaries so that I can produce labels with the correct name and postal address so that every Club Secretary receives a copy of this Newsletter for the benefit of their members. Email addresses are not good enough because we always have so many photos that the Newsletter would simply not get through to you despite the spread of broadband – it is too big. In theory, Vision can tell me this information – but only if the Club concerned has completed its affiliation process for the current year and updated its records there. The other issue concerns Registration and Affiliation. No fewer than 8 clubs became lapsed from the Badminton England Membership Vision website at the end of January. It was only by checking out the District League websites that I discovered that 6 of these clubs are still playing in Leagues. I have sent all the “known secretaries” and their District Secretaries an email. At the time of writing this the last of the six clubs has just got back to me. The League Secretaries do not seem to have picked up on the fact that they have unaffiliated/uninsured Clubs playing in their Leagues. I would remind them that it is the responsibility of the Leagues to check that all their member Clubs are in good standing with the National Governing Body and with the County. So please tell me – how am I to carry out my duties as assistant to the Newsletter and provide up-to-date labels for envelopes and how, as County Registration Secretary, am I to ensure that every Club Secretary I contact is the right person to remind when I find that Clubs are still leaving their members unaffiliated and uninsured? Between now and September/October quite a lot of Clubs will elect new Officers to carry out the running of the Clubs. Please, please, please put at the top of your list of jobs to do: Notify the District League Secretary (where applicable, the County Secretary and Badminton England the name, postal address, telephone number and email address of the new Secretary of your Club. And if we have been getting it wrong this year, tell us and we can get it right next year. And if you are intending to resign and leave your post, maybe even your Club, please make sure that those who take over after you know what has to be done. I have found two Clubs recently who were still waiting for someone to tell them what to do about Affiliation of their members! Messages had gone to the previous Officers but never reached the new ones.
